what are you watching now?

Is it just me or does one of the often recurring music pieces by Mogwai sound like a straight rip off of the intro to Over by Portishead ? Still, they've done a great job with the music for the Returned. Really really good.

That bonfire gathering that Lena came upon at the end, was it from them that the animals who drowned in the lake were fleeing from in a previous episode? The guy at the Helping Hand (Pierre?) is responsible indirectly for Esteben's parents killing themselves by encouraging Camille to reach out to the parents of the other victims looking for messages from their lost children..

haven't they just? the whole thing is so atmospheric and i think the music is a huge part of that. it also stands up by itself - i bought the album and it's incredible. another reason for a twin peaks comparison, there.

yeah, maybe! what a fantastic closing shot that was. i'm assuming they're more 'returned' we haven't seen yet? the shots of the dead animals were wonderful too.

Have kept up with this , this week. Pretty bloody good. Olivia Colman brilliant as ever in the first episode. The scene where she turned her boys over to the coppers- when they came to arrest them she was beyond outstanding. Don't think anyone would get away so easily with nicking iPhones from their place of work though. Second episode about the Chinese girl's troubles and third episode with the Richard character v compelling. Final part tonight. A grim and gritty view of Brixton.

Yes, not easy viewing. And a lot of the characters are less than easy to like. The reviewer in the Metro newspaper suggested that the lack of humour in the first episode meant it wasn't realistic. I guess that's a point you could have a good argument about.

I found the Polish girl in the final episode last night likeable. Prob the most likeable character of the lot.

She might regret that yet. I was thinking when they first lost the power that people should try to hot foot it to that fancy Paris or somewhere for a bit of civilisation, but that ain't gonna work. I think this is getting a bit Sartrian now: the whole idea that "Hell is other people", as raised in Sartre's Huis Clos (No Exit), where people are locked in a room together for eternity, with no respite from one another. I guess one shouldn't be surprised at the French re-working one of their most controversial philosophers in an eight part spooky drama.

Bit self-indulgent I thought, and none of the characters played to their strengths.

Can only get better.

saw the latest wright/pegg/frost outing last weekend – the world’s end. very poor, i thought. a few belly laughs (and a nice running gag about band names) but mostly stale, lazy and wildly self-indulgent. wright's visual schtick is starting to feel somewhat dated to me. DIRE plot. and it’s the first time ever i’ve actively noticed feeling shut out as a female audience member.

great soundtrack though – takes me back to the sun-and-cider-soaked summer i left school myself. you can't really go wrong kicking something off to the strains of 'loaded'. and they play the sundays. THE SUNDAYS! my heart leapt at the opening chords. best moment in the whole thing for me.

all that said, with its themes of man-children, alcohol and nostalgia, i’m sure it will appeal to more than one nooler.

by contrast, i’ve also been watching ‘orange is the new black' on netflix. bloody brilliant.

When i first saw a trailer for that i thought it was going to be set in the World's End pub in Camden. Is that pub still there? Not been in or near it for years. The film doesn't appeal to me that much.Seems like a stale idea for a film.

i'm watching this, repeatedly. the bit where the little girl says "i'm having piri-piri. I'M ALLOWED" (0:09) made me laugh until i cried and my insides hurt and i almost couldn't breathe.

Bit confused watching The Returned ad break. Is it English adverts with French subtitles? Or French adverts with English subtitles? Or French adverts with French subtitles? Or English adverts with English subtitles? Still, Victor is still an annoying little twat either way.

Funnily enough there is a story in my family that our surname possibly comes from France.

I didn't want to do a "spoiler" beforehand, but The London Standard indeed said on Thursday there would be a second series, now confirmed to be snapped up by ch4. Couldn't they have just wrapped the thing up a little neater at the end and left it at that? Exactly what are all the "dead" planning on doing? I felt somewhat validated (or some similar word that I can't think of)that we had a flood scene at the end, as I predicted before watching episode one. I wanted something a little more full-on mind you. Agree with the Portishead comments. I don't suppose there's enough of a tune there for Portishead to bother suing...

i thought that was a perfect ending. i do feel everso moved by julie and victor's relationship.

i think the turning point for me was when i stopped trying to work it out and just started enjoying it being beautiful and interesting and intriguing. i can only hope it doesn't go the same way as 'lost', where the writers clearly had no idea what was going on, either.

(i know i keep banging on about twin peaks in relation to the returned, but i was reading this week about how david lynch never wanted to reveal the identity of laura palmer's killer - that for him that wasn't what the series was about - but they had to do it, and in the middle of the second series, because of pressure from the network. even as 16 year old watching it, i knew that was when it fell apart. it's not always the destination that's important, it's the journey. *lights gauloise* *looks engimatic*)

Thanks Nora. I get an urge to buy the soundtrack but then i think whenever i've bought soundtracks to things i've watched it's never the same as when you are experiencing the music with what it's soundtracking so dunno on that one for the moment.

Gonna have to watch last night's episode again.It's all a bit blurred.Seemed at the time as if 'La Horde' had let the dam flood the town because they'd not been allowed to take all the returned back.

i really cannot recommend it highly enough. maybe give it a twirl round spotify if you're in two minds. (mine's on vinyl or i'd make you a copy.)

i tell you what else i love: the titles. look at them. swoon.
