favourite classic SNL sketch

i'm reading a book about 'saturday night live' right now and i'm curious as to what everyone's (at least the americans') favourite classic SNL sketch is. i had to go with 'nick the lounge singer'--gives me side cramps every time.

what about the sparten cheerleaders with will farrow and that other girl? that was always so funny and they never ruined it by making a movie out of it.

the will ferrell/cheri oteri cheerleading one is fantastic, but i stopped with pat b/c i decided to have 1995 as my ending point.

I went with Chevy Chase's Gerald Ford, that always gave me giggles. To think, all the effort they put now into dead-on Presidential impersonations, and the best one by far was Chevy Chase dressed as himself, just taking pratfalls. There's a lesson in that.....

Well, of those I voted for the swinging Czech brothers (two wild and crazy guys), but I always liked the Point/Counterpoint debate on Weekend Update between Dan and Jane Curtain. Jane.......you ignorant slut..... Excellent debating skills there Danny boy!!!

yep, i'm reading 'live from new york'. actually, since it's a collection of quotes it's more of a 'before bed browse' than an actual 'read'. and my avatar is quoted in it, as well!

tho nobody will give a shit, i will enter a write in, my favorite snl sketch is the one where eddie murphy puts on make up to look like a white person and gets treated a lot better. he goes to a jewelry store and gets waited on by a black person then the manager comes and tells the black guy to go away and offers to give eddie stuff for free. he also gets on a bus and there's a black person on it. when the black person leaves all the white people get out party stuff like champagne and balloons and have a big party.

i've always been interested in race relations and thought this was great social commentary. definitely makes up for the lackluster cast and writing of the early eighties.

my second nomination would be the mr. robinson's neighborhood sketches. eddie murphy was a shining light in the black hole of snl's early eighties. tho charles rocket saying fuck on live tv was definitely a plus.

eddie murphy's skits are classics! i'd forgotten about the one where he dresses up as a white guy. good one, that was! and the james brown hot tub one was damn funny, as well. (mr. robinson's neighbourhood, too.)

Let's not forget Andy Kaufman's classic Mighty Mouse bit (miming to the "Here I come to save the day!" line of the song). I always when I see that

You forgot the part in the skit where he goes into a bank to get a loan and the loan office starts pulling out stacks of cash saying, "Go on, take it." Eddie asks about interest rates and when to pay back the money and the loan offices says," Oh, just pay it back when you can."

Favorite SNL moment:

Elvis Costello stops his band from playing one song and launches "Radio, Radio" instead. Wish I'd been alive the first time that aired...

Second: The time that Jim Carrey hosted promoting "Cable Guy". The entire show was hilarious, but when Jim was a lifeguard giving mouth-to-mouth to Will Ferrell, I about died.

Third: Mike Myers was doing a song-and-dance routine when he hosted, he bumps into Tim Meadows and thanks him for droping by to see him host. Tim, of course, was still a cast member at that point and so points it out to Mike.

It was quite a sight, I didn't know what to think. For the record, he started with Less Than Zero, then said "There's no need to do that song here", or something like that. Just remember, the Sex Pistols were scheduled to perform that week first, (Malcolm probably never had any intention of getting anywhere near that show), which is why the drummer wears the "Thanks Malc" shirt.
