speaking of good bands... well, to tell the truth they made a great first album in my opinion. then they started to live in "sweet harmony" and nothing´s been the same since then. they admit they were always fans of new order. I heard jon marsh (singer) became a dj. what a pity. he´s got a unique voice. I´d like to have a voice like that to sing myself. the sun rising and time after time are my absolutely favourite songs of them. they have an official site that gives the fans almost everything: remixes, demos, rare tracks, unreleased material and all their videos. I´ve just listened to all and kind of turned back time to the early 90s. good feeling. I wonder why new order doesn´t have an official site like that one. maybe because NOOL exists. I used to correspond regularly with Jon Marsh when they were a struggling four-piece Indie band, and have a huge pile of demos, exclusive tracks, mixing desk recordings and an interview. Spent many a day travelling all over the shop to see them support The Fall in late 1986.
They supported New Order twice, at Doncaster and Hemel Hempstead 1985.

do you have the same opinion as mine, that they started to lose it in the album "conscience"? maybe the guitar player (Steve Waddington) was the music engine. so when he was ousted in favor of marsh´s wife helena, jon loose his direction. in spite of having a tremendous commercial success with "sweet harmony" the quality was poorer. and even poorer on the "X" album. what do you think?
It was quite clear right from the beginning of the band that there were two different musical directions - Jon wanted to do "pop" and Steve wanted to do "different". They ended up doing neither for a couple of years, with a lot of very samey songs, quasi-political lyrics and more than a mere nod in the direction of New Order. Tim and Guy were sacrificed in 87 (Tim first, to be temporarily replaced by Hari Sajjan of The Black Tulips on bass after the Bath Moles gig), and the early 88 gigs were quite spectacular, leaning heavily towards a keyboard sound and prototypes of some of the "Happiness" songs.
The further down the commercial road they got, the more Jon's interpretations got e-influenced (by his own admission), and that dreary ambient shite they released (and I thought Conscience was bad enough after the great success of the poptastic Happiness) was the last straw for many.
I haven't heard from Jon for a few years now, which is a pity, as we've come a long way from when we were teenagers with similar tastes in music and very different ideas of how to get there !
I also recently downloaded the Demo's from Happiness at their website. Time After Time has more guitar and Your Love Take Me Higher is a little darker and harder. I used to absolutely love The Beloved. I even liked Conscience...some of those songs aren't that bad. I dropped them when X came out but have considered getting it recently on the strength of For Your Love hosted on their site. I just love his voice. Happiness and Technique got played to death my senior year of high school. I have the Blissed Out compilation plus about 5 different 12"s...they do have a new album in the works so maybe it will be a good effort. Jon Marsh is a good enough DJ whose song selection is decent. Their track Timeslip was a minor hit on the dance charts but featured no vocals from Jon. Kinda techy and chugging if that makes any sense. Good song. I found a white label but i don't think it's ever been officially released.

I own a very rare (I think...) compilation of their earlier work -1986 to 1988 - wich I find very interesting and very New Order-esque. Forever Dancing should have been massive!

Ups, Biz, your answer was hard to find in the middle of my quotes! Here's the discography I have: Where it is Happiness Blissed out Conscience X I also own a 12" with the original song featured on "Blissed" but I can't remember it's name (I'm not doing this at home...) I bought the Sattelite CD-single but gave it away (the remixes were crap!) Anyway, here's the bad news for you and Benny's: I DON'T HAVE A CD-R DRIVE!
