New Tricky Album "Vulnerable" Sample?

I've just listened to the new Tricky album "Vulnerable" today. Anybody else notice the same thing I did? Some bloke has got a bass credit on "Wait for God" but to me it really sounds like the bass on "Isolation" that's been cut up & messed around with. This is probably his most poppy-mellow album. Glad to see his continued unexpected un-rap-like choices for cover versions: Cure's Lovecats and XTC's Dear God.

hmm...i didn't hear "Isolation" in that track so much. I can see where you got that idea from, but it's a very simple bass line in both songs, so I don't think they jacked it from JD. The Cure cover is certainly strange, though. Doesn't do the original justice, in my opinion.

Tricky is so underrated these days - everyone touted him as a god when Maxinquaye was lumped in with the other Bristolian TripHoppers Portishead and Massive Attack, and when he decided to follow it up with two far less palatable (but more interesting) albums, everyone just gave up on him. Okay, so he did too much smoke which fuelled his loopy phase, but now he's reasserted his creativity and - away from the UK - started making records that don't sound like the musings of a psychopath set to churning malfunctioning machinery anymore, people have all but forgotten he exists.

That's the big bad music biz for you innit? :(

Pre-Milleneium Tensions, when it first came out got ripped to shreds by the media fooks. For those who gave up on the record go back and listen to it again. It's a fookin great record. Gald to hear that he has a new album out, I simply had no clue.

the last one got bad reviews, but it has lovely packaging....

Totally agree. Pre-Millenium Tension is better than Maxinquaye (as long as you skip "Ghetto Youth" track). But you can't tell the media that. He's suffered ever since because he was once hailed by the media as the second coming. Bit like Strokes and White Stripes at the moment - you just know that in a year the media will be panning them. He had a brilliant ep called "Mission Accomplished" that sneaked out a few years back and no one even noticed.

Tricky's one of these artists that will only be recognised as great again in about 10 years time through longevity and his prolific output - I think it's been 7 albums in 9 years, that's prolific by today's standards.

he's doing a new album as part of that collective he was in before again soon, forget the name but terry hall was in it too

Any of you got that NEARLY GOD project? That was pretty damned good too - again unusual choices of collaborators and cover versions - Siouxsie's "Tattoo" - very inspired re-reading of that particular obscure b-side.

Pre-Millennium tension is excellent but he just lost me with Angel's With Dirty Faces. I think being legit crazy will take its toll on you eventually. Supposedly he had this condition involving eating things with yeast in it that made him paranoid and crazy as hell. He's supposedly better now, but I heard some terrible tracks off of Blowback - that Nirvana cover is reprehensible. I will admit to fairly liking "evolution revolution love" despite my inclination to bludgeon the lead singer from live. But I'm excited to hear what his new album sounds like. How'd you manage to get a copy of it?

The "Vulnerable" album has been out in Britain for a couple of weeks. I think the British press generally ignore him now because he lives in New York (when last I read?) and rarely comes to Britain for gigs or promotion. I bought it from HMV the day it came out. I only spotted it because there was an HMV employee moving a pile of Tricky albums from the front display rack to the back catalogue obscurity section to be replaced with another generic Ibiza compilation.

Obviously he was only trendy for 3 hours trade here. Tricky had a Greatest Hits out last year that never even got promoted. The trip hop tag is now an un-hip phrase with the British media. I'd be surprised if it's not available in the States as I'd expect he'd be treated better over there.

I love Tricky's pot-smoking enhanced voice, i'll never get sick of it or his music. I recently found out that the song "Makes Me Want To Die" off "Pre-Millenium Tension" isn't about a failed romance, but about his mum, she took her own life when he was about five, poor guy.
