what makes a band "good"? what makes a band "crap"?

technique? precision? musical knowledge? lyrical content? poise? showmanship?

what is, in your opinion, that makes or breaks a band?

Sean, I think being unique is a good start for any band, attitude is another but what is the right and wrong attitude?. A good band also are doing it for their own enjoyment and should't have an eye on what other people think of them. All down to whether they want success either critically or financially.

no kidding it is a matter of personal taste. what are the criteria you have set in place? i know that from the every little counts thread, you have already stated that you don't like ballads. so i assume you think Ms. Dion is one of the biggest contributors to the "crap" pile... i would have to agree with you on that one, but not just because she sings a lot of ballads. her ballads are sappy, cheesy, and every note is set to pull at your hearts strings. talk about a dull tune...

I do not have any pre-concieved ideas or parameters over what I look for in a band, kind of ticking off a check list. For me, If I like a song, I'll buy it. Every Little Counts - The lyrics just do nothing for me, I don't get it. Take away the words and you have a decent TV theme tune.

One ballad I do like is 'Without You', The original singer's name escapes me as I write. And there are others.........

What makes or breaks a band? Unfortunately today, it seems to be the fickle teen market, girls just hitting maturity who go gaga for ambigious dancer-types who lip-sync their way to glory with kindergarten-level lyrics about "love, kittens, and buttons" or some other bullshit that Diane Warren wouldn't claim as her own.

Now, that's just the MTV set...as for the REAL MUSIC fans, the old trio of talent, originality, and luck still apply. Great tunes, a good general approach to music, and something worth saying are prerequsites. Personnally, I look for artists who either have a distinctive sound or who at least, if they're ripping someone off, are ripping off someone good (see Interpol, The Coral, and The Strokes). Usually I don't go much for the "blind buy" (you haven't heard the music, but you've heard the press) but occasionally I make the leap of faith and that can be the most rewarding purchases off all.

I don't mean to ramble, but this is an interesting question. At any rate, I've given my CD player a bit of a rest lately, it seems like months since I've been content just to sit down and let the music burst out. Mainly this is because, with it being summer and the lack of air-conditioning, I have to have my windows up and that means not keeping the neighbors up all night. However, I've also spent more time watching DVDs then before (they are really wonderful little things, aren't they) and so music hasn't been quite as prominent lately. However I am trying to rectify that with a little music here and there.

I prefer the vitality of raw spirit and raw genius over the boredom of flawless technique or precision with no vision and nothing to say.

i would agree with you. what about if a band had raw spirit, no genius, but a lot of technique (kinda how i see Intepol)?

Originality, energy and attitude. Oh, and a pushy manager also helps.

the how to have a hit single one? surely that was more on quantity of sales rather than quality of product?

who cares about a hit single? i am only concerned with personal opinions on what makes something "good."
