i need to type fast so I can protect myself from ppl throwing rocks at me for suggesting this. but at this point in NO's carear, seperated from Joy Div, by 25 years, when New Order plays Joy Div. songs, are they not essentially covers at this point? The emotion and raw energy Joy. Div possesed isn't there anymore, so whats the point of playing them?

pointless nostalgia. that's why....

oh...and they're catchy. there's that thrill of hearing a song that has not been played in 25 years, in the case of ones they dredge up.

If they can perform LWTUA like they did at the NME awards........

Does U2 do a cover version on Sunday, Bloody Sunday when they play live?  That's nearly 25 years old.  How about when Dylan plays Like a Rolling Stone?  That doesn't have the emotion that it once had.

Ian didn't write these songs on his own; if he did Ceremony and In a Lonely Place shouldn't be considered NO songs either.  I think they built a mystique by not playing JD songs for song that a wall was built between the two bands higher than it should have been.

No rocks, just my opinion.

Are 10,000 maniacs the same band without Natalie Merchant or what about INXS holding a reality show competition to replace Michael Hutcheon (sp?) ? There's a huge difference between Joy Division and what New Order became. I guess my point is, that New Order became New Order because they did not wanna follow the path the above mentioned bands took. They had the integrity to do something different and not simply replace Ian and go on being Joy Division. Ceremony and In a Lonely Place belong to both bands. Written as Joy Division and properly recorded as New Order. Bernard singing a song like "She's Lost Control" to me would be a cover because the song is about something that Ian witnessed from a first person point of view and messed with his psyche. Instead of re-hashing old Joy Division songs, New Order should dig up tracks that they have not played in 20 something years. They have enough material as New Order. Ian wrote the lyrics and sang the songs. So Bernard is basically covering him everytime he sings a Joy Div. song.

As Barney said, they wrote those songs, they have a right to play them.  But unless they plan on doing a two hour set I'd prefer only one or two JD tunes and preferable not the ones they did in the past tour.  The exception is LWTUA as part of an encore.

Truthfully I am happy just hearing LWTUA, but if they want to stretch themselves out, I'd really love Colony or even Insight, which would be absolutely brilliant.

I take your point Kamar - 10,000 Maniacs are a great example - how about the Dead Kennedys without Jello which truly ripped the heart out of the band.  On 511 they played 5 JD songs which is more than required, buy I think that festival crowds have a different expecation from gig crowds - more "Greatest Hits".

I didn't realize it, but I picked Dead Souls and Novelty - two sogs that I love for the instrumentals as much as the lyrics. maybe there's something there.

In the end they're going to play what they want and I know I'll have a blast, sure you will too.

Some of the darker songs might work OK at Coachella if they get some help from NIN.  I agree with some of the comments about Barney being a little bit too silly for some Joy Division stuff.  You can tell on the 5 11 DVD that he makes an effort to leave out the whoops and keep the dancing to a minimum, but it is out of place.  I think Kominiko or Digital would be OK.

Personally, I know it is unavoidable, but I'm pretty sick of LWTUA... I mean, its a really good song, but you'd think Joy Division was a one hit wonder.  There are tons of great Joy Division songs, but that's the only one you hear about.  24 Hour Party People would've been a better movie with some variety in the soundtrack--rather than LWTUA 3-5 times (I don't recall anymore).  I hope Control limits LWTUA to 1 or 2 times.

I agree that I'd like to hear some obscure early New Order song, like Mesh.

We made a contract - whoop!

In a field of snoooow! - come on!

But I also think they should carry on playing Joy Division. At this point of their career playing Transmission or LWTUA is not much different from playing Ceremony or Temptation or even Blue Monday, they're all old hits and a couple of years of difference in the chronology are nothing compared to a history of 29 years (next year we celebrate 30 years since the Stiff Kittens!).

I'd like to hear my favourite, Twenty Four Hours, segued into the Happy Mondays' Twenty Four Hours Party People! :thumb:

Deep in the heart of - whoop!

where simpathy held swaaaaayyyrgh!

Gotta find my destiny! - [whistle]

Before it gets too laaaate! - come on!

Hooow old are you - are you old enough?

To be heeere, watching that?! - Hahr!

I would choose 'Transmission' because I think they do a really good job of it. I wouldn't mind if they dropped the Joy Division stuff completely this time around, though, because they'll be adding new stuff to their set, and there are New Order tracks that i've never heard them do live that I would like to see introduced too. Something would have to give and I wouldn't be too bothered if it was the JD stuff because some of it has had a decent run.

I'm not really bothered though, as long as I get to see them live again :)

Transmission works well for New Order, and Digital isn't bad.  I think Kominiko might work well, although I've never heard them play it.  I would really like to hear some older, less common New Order stuff, even more, though.

Digital was a disaster when they played it!

You won't be alone in not having heard Kominiko, it isn't a Joy Division song! Maybe you mean Komakino? They only played that once as far as we know as JD, and haven't played it at any New Order gigs, though a few seconds of the bassline used to occur at soundchecks in 1981.

Sorry, my mistake.  Yes, I meant Komakino.  I think it shows a pretty good hint of what was to come... the heavy drum sounds like some early experiments for Blue Monday, then throw in lots of good bass guitar and a little engineering.  I'm not a musician or a historian, but as a New Order fan who will listen to Joy Division, I like it (even if I can't remember the name :P).

yeah, regardless of what they play, I know I'll love every damn second of the show :) and whatever is not played, i'll ask dave roberts to play at the afterparty :P

I'd have to agree with the sentiment that early/rare New Order would be preferable to Joy Division.  Unless they plan to play for 2 hours, they will not be playing several New Order songs that many of us would love to hear live.  And who knows when - if? - they will be back to the States.  Joy Division's music is theirs, and maybe playing the songs (particularly in America) is more of a tribute to Ian, who never made it to the States.  But Joy Divison is a bit heavy for what I'm assuming will be a more upbeat atmosphere.

We can all chill out to "Passover" at the afterparty.

I think Hooky should sing New Dawn Fades.

You've never heard me sing it in the shower, I do I nice job.

Same two that I would have picked though, the opening riff of Novelty always sends a shiver down my spine.

  Good call mate, I was singing Dead Souls in the shower this morning before 9AM class. Those deep notes really helped me to wake up.

Cheers mate. I never thought of that but thats a touching thought. I was thinking these May shows might be sort of special. It's been 25 years now. I'll be happy with every second of the show and i know they won't disappoint as long as they're being just who they are.

LWTUA and Atmosphere. Barney just can't handle the vocals on Transmission. But honestly, other than LWTUA, I'd rather hear NO songs. It's just not the same with Barney singing. But I really like their new take on Isolation, all the same!

Colony.

Fat chance, but methinks it could be pulled off and the song flat out rocks...great musicianship on that track. Love the way the drums, bass and guitar intertwine.

I was thinking about Colony, too. I just don't think NO's current sound would work with it, though. That song is so dependent upon its production (not that it's not extremely well-written, but I think its sound is its strongest point); I just don't know that NO could pull it off live. I also doubt they would even try, as you said!

Colony requires precision timing on the part of all the musicians playing the song. It has to be right and tight or it will be shite. Can't imagine them ever thinking about it, far too demanding at this stage in their pensions.

Imagine them trying to do Interzone.

A Means to an End with a nice dance beat behind it.

You should have heard the Interzone we just did at rehearsals today! So funny I may stick an MP3 of the rehearsal tape up!
