New Order live @ Oxegen Festival (IE) 2005.07.10

Bernard was on top form. Hooky looked a bit distracted actually. They only played a two song encore because the whole thing was to have been closed down by 11pm. The crowd got a choice between Atmosphere and She's Lost Control. SLC won and then they wrapped with fucking BM. Great stuff (except for BM).

Just a quick post from me, since using a public computer while the girls are doin their shopping, is not the most comfortable thing :D :

Im basically covered by what the others have already said here, especially by CuanaD's posts, who after, all was our best beer companion and our personal guide to Dublin (it is just impossible to thank him enough :) ), besides we will meet him earlier this night before we leave tomorrow for a last (maybe a bit more modest) round :) .

As for the gig, it was oblvious that we 'd love it no matter what (after all it was our first ever NO gig), but i must say it was better than i actually expected: Bernard was in such a great mood, Hooky was in his (usual) great mood, in 2 words, the majority that preffered "the fu%$%in Foo Fighters (the exact words Bernie used ), simply dont know what they missed .

Was also lovely to finally meet all these ppl that so far, i only knew from their avatar and screen names, especially Don and Nes who joined us for the big night out that followed the festival :) .

P.S. My english arent THAT great, especially with that ugly greek accent of mine, and the Greek educational system is so crap, that is simply ablsolutely incapable of teaching the kids any language - Greek parents they pay private schools to teach their kids, because its a necesity really, rather than they love knoweldge . You native english speakers dont need to learn, say greek or something, so that explains it ;) .

We arrived onsite around 1pm, in a (failed) attempt to catch some bands in the “New Tent”. We mainly hung around the main stage all day. Feeder are a terrible group, and on top of it all the lead singer is a fucking Tory. Audioslave weren’t great – although they played 4 rage songs, and it was great to see Tom Morello. Mike Skinner had a terrible set – and seemed to suffer from the same “crowd there to see someone else” syndrome that NewOrder suffered from in Glastonbury. I had planned to get in LCD soundsystem but got a call from a friend who was interviewing Hooky, so I gave him some pointers and questions instead.

Then over to the ticket stage to see Doves – who were fantastic. Its surprising that they aren’t really huge in my opinion. The only downside to that gig was the seriously over the top “security” men at it. At one stage it looked like these steroid abusing bell-ends were going to provoke a lot of violence.

Then I decided that the best spot for the gig would be around and about Hookys setup (“love to London” on the Amps), and over there I met CuanaD, MYOB, Jonny Giles, ATR, the Greeks, and big Al Jarvis. There were loads of others (I’m remembering faces not names).

I forget most of the inter-song banter – and couldn’t really hear it in the first place because I was “down front”, but Bernard was being quite funny. It was also fantastic to get a close up on that dancing during Bizarre Love Triangle.

There was a good crowd around me jumping around. In particular I remember Alan Jarvis, some tall Irish lad, and a small asian lad with a white T realy getting into it. Outside this wider group of about 15 were some girly-girls and a load of motionless types down the front – including some guy with an ironic mullet (very 2002).

Regret and Krafty sounded good, but the crowd didn’t really get into it until Crystal. Then Transmission (which-again sounded amazing) and Love Vigilantes. WFTSC wasn’t really known by the audience, hopefully it will be played on any future tours. True Faith and Bizarre love Triangle sounded great, and everyone was really getting into the dancy numbers. LWTUA was a real crowd pleaser – and then my favourite – Temptation.

She’s lost control and Blue Monday also got the crowd going – and having heard neither of them live before, I thought it was a great way to wrap up. There was some lad beside me who seemed to have an outer body experience when BlueMonday was played. However much we talk about it online – in front of 90% of fans at a festival, the band should play BlueMonday, BLT etc. Like it or not, if they launched into Sunrise or Lets Go, there would be a lot of leavers and about 14 people bopping along.

Ideally they would play a smaller indoor venue for fans like us at some stage – but that’s not likely since they aren’t too keen on touring. It’s a pity really – but what can we do?

Anyhow, I didn’t head into the city centre later and can proudly say I haven’t been in Copper-Face-Jacks in 4and1/2 years:) I would have liked to have gone, but I was wet through with sweat, and extremely tired after the gig. By the time we got off the Bus in town (1:30am) I didn’t think there was much left in it and decided to head home for a shower and hot drink. I was feeling pretty unwell, and even now feel like my kidneys are fucked (and I don’t drink alcohol). I was much more excited at this gig than in Glastonbury. The lack of any Coldplay Contingent coupled with the good weather made it a really enjoyable day. I think got a little dehydrated during the gig, and am still suffering.

Anyhow, the memories survive. I think the band enjoyed it and it went really well – espically after the Lansdowne Road debacle. Hopefully they will play a proper gig in Ireland on the next UK tour.

Yep! I was about three rows back from the stage directly in front of Barney. Then I got semi-pushed over nearer to Hooky's side but I wasn't complaining. Hard to complain about anything when the world's greatest band is standing on a stage in front of you....except for the surfer at the end. I think he was at the wrong gig.

It was! It is every Coppers favourite nightclub.

Hopefully Hooky will do a set in Dublin. He would do quite well I think.

Well at last I got to see the Order live. Bought Blue Monday and TPK in 85 and have listened to NEw Order so many times. Was to young to go to the SFX in 85 and was in hospital for the Peace Together thing in 93 (still have the unused ticket stub believe it or not) and was out of the country for the Chillis support. Amazing so it was. Was about 6 rows back just to the left of the stage (Phils side) in me new Nike Celtic top. Went down to the ticket stage for the Doves to get a good vantage point and noticed that it was very easy to get up the front. In between bands most people enjoyed the unusually fab weather for Ireland and sat in the grass. By the time Doves started their was only bout 100 at the front of the stage but by the time they finished a brilliant set they were well packed. Was worried that most of the crowd would disappear for the Order but most hung around. I was never as interested in seeing a changeover at a festival b4 and to see the various pieces been set up was a thrill in itself. By the time the boys went on stage the crowd looked sparse but by a couple of songs in it had swelled considerably. I was actually suprised that for a band who has really neglected Ireland in the past (as everywhere else I suppose) with regards to gigs they got a much larger crowd than Doves (even though the new doves album had done much better here than WTSC). Barney was in magnificent form which was really suprising considering most of the impression i got from the site on this tour was that he wasn't in the best of form. Very sarcastic and funny he said that going by the size of the crowd the foo fighters must be bigger in irelansd but they sounded like a poormans fall. anyway during the gig I think they were suprised by the reaction. Crystal got a really big reaction which is not suprising considering it was used in an ad overhere for a sports retailer on tv. Barney said the weather was great in "our" sorry your lovely country for a change b4 adding "I'd better be careful what I say better i" obviously realising the tricky politics and past history between ireland and the uk. Hooky pointed at one stage to one of the fellows in front of him and told him he was going to have a heart attack (the person in the crowd that is).Wonder if it was one of the posters here? Barney announced during the encore that they were going to play 3 songs but due to time constaints he had been told by the big guy who may have been tour manager that they were only allowed 2 songs. He also slagged of the big fellow introducing him as his dad and bereting him for weariong an outrageous Hawian Shirt. Told hime it was a disgrace to wear such ashirt in Ireland. Barney also made fun of himself telliing us "What a great crowd we were" b4 adding that thats what was on the autocue. Gig itself was perfect. Synths were a bit low during BLT and True FaITH but thats only a small quibble. Me missus who likes the order but who is not as biased as me couldn't believe how good they were as I had warned her that they could be dodgy live.She like us all wondered how they are not the biggest band in the world but after seeing some of the bands on the big stage and the dodgy sound I was thankful for them playing on the second stage. Think they picked up a few more fans in ireland. Also for those who want to know tshirts on sale were the blue monday floppy sleeve on and the NO cover for WTSC. Also say the UP JD one on sale as well. Slan

The Rip off factor was huge, and the Extorsion of the timetable was something else. Food & Drink prices seemed to be in multiples of €5. I guess thats the way at these things.

If you remember, from age 12 - 15, I listened to nothing but the Stone Roses. I was taking the piss, and trying to get you to admit that you like Kylies music as much as you do Nick Cohens rants

Yep Clockwork. However I must disagree with you on Ian Brown. I wanna be adored was class but his voice was terrible. Was a bit of a grump as well. Left after 3 or 4 songs. Saw one of the tribute stome Roses Experience or something in sligo recently and the singer was better than Ian.

With his hooded jacket, little legs in brown jeans and baseball cap, he resembled a novelty dressed teddy bear. Thought he looked great!

Actually on the subject of vikings was it my imagination or did i see someone dressed up as a viking. Was either that or a roman outfit. Must have been feckin baked in the heat

I was at the gig yesterday too and went up the front for Josh Ritter to reserve a place and stayed there until NO. (i.e. waited thru all of Josh Ritter and Doves). This was about my 7 or eight time seeing them - last was abou 1990 and it was up there with the best of them. I've never seen them in such good form.

Just to add to some of the banter posted by others: Bernard Sumner introduced Love Vigilantes with something like: "I can't tell you what this next song is about because I haven't a f**king clue. Actually, it's about my experiences in Vietnam. I wasn't in Vietnam so my experiences were nothing. Yes, the song is about nothing."

At another point he goes: "We usually play a slow song next in our set - Hooky's pushing on a bit on and he needs a rest."

Anyway, managed to end up with one of the setlists complete with footprints. Also got some nice photos being in the front.

Highlight for me was hearing She's Lost Control live for the first time - absolutely amazing.

I think the band were genuinely surprised by the warmth of the crowd towards them and BS stated that "he hoped to come back and pay again in Ireland sometime" as he left the stage.

I picked up one of the Unknown Pleasures styled T-shirts - it just has the dying star graphic with no text anywhere. I had to explain to the girl serving that it was Joy Division and direct her to it in the rows of shirts. I then asked her how much and she had to go check because they hadn't sold any.

Blue Monday shirt looked like they had got the amount of colours along the side wrong altho' I would have needed the record with me to check. I wonder are they losing 2p on each T-Shirt sold :).

Those people jumping around infront of the Hooky area - that was all of us nool'ers we were probably the ones pushing you around - so next time (here's hoping for more gigs next year) come on over & introduce yourself like I did last night - you'll meet a great bunch of maniac vikings

I think next time I'll have to be drunk 'caus I've been sober for all the gigs so far I nearly would have preferred if NO had been on earlier - so that we all could have got a decent few hours drinking in afterwards - getting to know DoN(BIG thank you again for the badge) & yourself was brilliant, but it would have been even better to sit & talk shit with all the traveling party (& Clock & MYOB he had to leave after Frasers, bloody busses to Maynoth dont run after 2am)- looks like they all got a good nights sleep anyway - they all look sprightly in those morning after shots

About the banter - anyone remember the 'sweaty arse' part?

Bernard said something about scratching himself (which he did) then something about Phil's sweaty bottom, followed by 'steve definitly has a sweaty bottom anyway - sitting on that stool all night' - followed by the obligatory drumroll from Steve.

great to read everyone's posts and ness' pictures - glad it went off well. jealous as hell, but i'm dealing with it. :)

That photo of Hooky on the 2nd page (of photos) is excellent.

I diddn't notice Ian Browns voice being anything worse than usual. Nice to see he is still pulling the same on-stage moves as always.

I do have a vivid memory of Bernard fondling his crotch and focussed on that rather than accompanying dialogue!
Steve's 'Working Men's Club' style drum rolls enhance the amusement value!

Superb gig, the setlist has been explained well so i need not repeat it, Barneys adidas cap was highly amusing, Jarvo simply turned round to me and said "what the fook does he think he looks like!"

Someone chucked a cap on stage mid set which Hooky picked up and put on his head to a great cheer from the crowd before throwing it back at the crowd. Ness thought it might have been a sly dig at Barney but its just typical Hooky being the showman aint it!?

Great to meet all the Irish Order and the Greek Order out there top night out and a great set (probably the most professional i've heard em for ages as well!)

Oh and if anyone that remembers the Academy video, well Barney did the same finger pointing thing during Temptation which got another cheer from the 'Order faithful :D

I had the Academy Video - now I only have the box for the Academy Video:( - that's not much use to me!

For me the Gig has only ended today - :( We left the Greek Order off to the airport this morning for their connecting flight to Rome - I'm gonna miss you guys. Now I will be on a huge downer for a while - since we met on Saturday my life has been Totally NEWorder (with added Alcohol) - as it SHOULD be! Now I'm afraid its back to the real world for a while and pride of place in my wardrobe now goes to my Iraklis FC shirt (thank you Elias) with my Vikings badge pinned to it (thank you DoN, & Ness)
