There's laptop back-up as well if need be, it also powers the autocue (as is de rigeur these days!)

Dunno what makes you think I'm not gonna snipe your autocue like I been threatening to do to bernard all these years.

I'm surprised you even need the backups with all that roland gear. IN 3 years I've never even confused my JV90, which is shocking mainly because I can crash almost any other "synth" with a degree of skill usually reserved for computer programmers.

Same reason that Hooky and Bernard have two identical amp rigs on stage - paranoia!

I'm out of my depth now, need some advice from you guys about equipment, promotions etc.

Got this message from my mate "I have talked to the guys at Jabez and they have provisionally booked you in for Easter Monday. They have a few questions about equipment hire etc (ie do you need any equipment), I could see if we can get any promotions and such. They will need to know start times, access times etc."

If the cost is reasonable can I put the manager in touch with one of you lot?

Is Monty gonna do a 'neworderdisco' ?

WHEY-HEY! This is going to be excellent. If you want a DJ to fill in between bands,I'll do as long as you want on the day,if you want me.My equipment (no sniggering at the back) is a bit David & Goliath to what seems to be on display on this thread. All I can throw into the mix,is my NUMARK CDN22 Dual Cd player,Berringer mixer, double decks,a shit-load of NO and NO related tunes,or non-related for that matter;microphone,motor-mouth and odd dress sense. No major amps, what I got would only suit a wedding, but the other hardware has worked so far with the in-house sound system at the Star & Garter with a little tweeking from the in-house sound engineer. Let me know folks,I'd love to be part of this!

Ahem? Any large comfy leather chair i spot will be bolted to the ground behind the sound desk. It's an unwritten law, that "man with faders get comfiest chair", be it me, Monty (if the decks are in the sound enclosure), anyone else who sucks less than I do, or the ghost of Martin Hannet.

Here, Monty, does you gear not mind getting boomed around or does it like being all nicely suspended and isolated? Are we doing the big spinning black plastic things or just CD's?

Can you play LONG sets? :) Just on the offchance that by 9pm the entire stage and sound crew (signups open shortly, B.Army, you're drafted fucker :) ) is several sheets to the wind, it's a better plan to let them work at their own pace :D

Thought for the day..... If this is a late bar (what are the ramifications of the 24hpp licensing laws?) I...that's ME, for LAZY, PERSONAL, and some fairly spurious technical reasons.....would LIKE, to not end with bands. Say for instance it's a 1am bar and 1:30 fuckout time. I'd say plan to be bringing the last band off stage at around midnight. that means that by 12:20, most of the stage kit is broken down as much as it can be, the bands can chill, the band's slaves can chill, my slaves can chill, and i can chill save for the corner of one eye I'll keep on Monty cos he's a DJ, and it's not my rig :) Means that come the end of things the stuff can go to the vans, or be stored safely in house til the morning, without too much pissed falling around, because all the delicate stuff's been done.

If we play to curfew with bands (and if that's the vibe yous'uns want, I'm fine with it, no questions), it means all the people connected with the stage have to stay at least half way not fucked until the very death. There's nothing more painful that pulling a stage apart when you're so fuckered all you want is a kebab, oral sex and bed in any order or combination. Then again...it's a NO related gig, sod sense :)

I'll do as long as you want me! I'm just buzzing to be a part of it if there's room for a phat one. My gear minus amps and speakers takes up fook-all room.Could fit it on an average sized pub table. Just need a hand wiring up to whatever in-house soundsystem (or other) gear.Would be perfect if they did, that way,end of night,I would be able to carry on,and the bands be able to pack everything away. I'd be playing CDs and vinyl. Was quite surprised last gig, that I played 9-2am and there was still a wealth of stuff I didn't get to play.

Have you got one of those Jimmy Saville chairs, that has booze coming out of hidden compartments in the arms.:spit:

No, but I HAVE asked for a Canford Audio 19" mounted wine cooler (tho I suspect Misy Jem may drain it).

How's you turntables for feedback?

Not so bad so long as the cartridges are kept loose.I'd try and play as much on CD as I possibly can.

Tosser test passed with flying colours mate :) there are an awful lot of wrong answers to my question, and a very few right ones (for instance: "fucking terrible, any ideas?"), but that's one I've not heard from anyone but our own pet DJ's before.

Does that actually work? I know that we never had a feedback problem with decks when working with Rich(other half of snss) and George, it never entered my head. Pissed me off at times cos i LOVE alex paterson's patent trick (in my head...ok..i know other dj's do it) of stopping the deck, slamming the bass up and waiting, then sorting it all out JUST before the soundsystem implodes, and I used to try it if left near the decks too long, and it never worked. And one of the tricks they told me was adjusting the cart mounting (and obviously not using jurassic needles with a nice pick furry halo round them to act as a pickup). Ah well, MUST be true then :)

The single dumbest thing I ever seen done was by a certain nationally known Belfast DJ and his sidekick. they used to drag this completely un-called for sound rig up from Dublin, costing a fortune, and not use half of it. On several occassions when I attended as a wankered dancing mess, the decks were set up on.... brace yourself for this.... unplugged speakers of exactly the same spec as the ones, plugged in, 3 feet away. :banghead:

you don't need to be Martin Hannet to work that one out like (if anyone is confused about what I'm on about, find a guitar, or a piano and sing a note to it.....it sings back...sympathetic resonance)FFS some big concert rigs actually have passive speakers in them to get better resonance.

One night I was playing there, me, a couple of totally wasted tubes from college who I refused point blank to play the tunes to before the gig (I even soundchecked with a tune we weren't playing), and a bunch of unreliable and sick machines. I tried to tell the dj's what was going to happen. No comprehension. SO, the Dj's pushed their level as hard as it could go before VVVVVVVVVVVMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM happened, and stayed their all night. i came along at 11:30, with no such limit, the engineer [1] just grinned, and let it it ride. I literally BLEW the decks off the stage volume wise...the place went fucking mental instantly I dropped a bass drum in. Good job too cos the tunes were pretty shite TBH.

hey, look, I'm talking bollox again.

[1]remember I said the rig was pointless....they had a 32 channel console for...a stereo line from the dj mixer, 2 mics for a percussion player, and on that night, a stereo pair from me). I'm thinking I'm a twat for looking at something that size for doing 4 friggin bands on for NOOLday :) They also had an engineer, an assistant engineer and a 4 man crew. What was actually needed, was authorization from the house to use the in-house rig, and then 60 bills for 2K of bass bins from the hire shop...next door (more or less) muppetry! The engineer had the look of a man who'd had the same conversation as me with the dj's so many times he just didn't give a fucking toss any more, and I do not blame him one bit.

What kind of set-up have they got in Jabez? I've not been in there for years.Have they got a stage? Would be great if they had somewhere to store the stuff overnight so I can have a few drinks while I'm spinning some tunes. I've also got a T-Bar and some good spotlights if necessary, though it might be a bit redundant with all your gear coming.Let me know and I can always bring 'em.

THinking about it,last couple of times,my turntables have been about two feet from the speakers...and they were monsters!! If there's an enclosure,I'd probably play more vinyl, but if it's a stage job,and there's likely to be a Viking pitch invasion...will mostly play CDs later on.:jump::jump::jump::jump::jump::jump: (Viking pitch invasion)

Rumour has it the stage is less than imense. I will build us a fortress and you can come hide with me. Any fucker tries to pitch invade near a whole pile of gear hired in my ....errrrrr....Tim's name ( :D ) get's violenced, no arguments :)

Besides, it's an extra pair of eyes to track neaby drinks and their wobbly owners :)

OOH FUCK! Is that the rider? Confiscating nearby drinks? Heh heh.I've had a few spills on the equipment days gone by,they've not blown up on me,fortunately, but the sliders get fucked when the beer dries up.Very much like myself actually.

Minesweeping's often the only way when you;re on sound. The bar's always fucking closed when you're finished.

BTW....do we have a Spark in the house?

(me scared of 3-phase and such)

Wot we doing about promotion? I know a couple of FREE sites for Manchester METRO and Manchester Evening News GO magazine. I would be interested in what publicity MEN would provide knowing it's for Cancer Research. Plus if you want any posters doing,I'm a bit nifty with the old Microsoft Word. Get my posters done at a firm down Salford Quays, they blow them up to large poster size say 48" x 36" or bigger. Whether they will do deal for charity is another thing, but the more posters they do,the better discount they give.

I push faders and rotate knobs, occasionally I shout horrific abuse down the talkback[1]. Strategy, is OldMonkey's end of things thus far anyway. I assume the "other ranks" portion of the event will be the gig? Or is the footy and afterparty and Maya's bedroom all public too :) (there's a point...afterparty......hmmm location for the hardcore to keep at it....what about these new and haalcyon days of licensing in yonder green and peasant land?)

Perhaps an Access all activities badge for noolers :)

Promotion is such a tricky question. Sometimes yuo get a full house by word of mouth, sometimes you get 5 people for every 100 quid you spent on flyers and posters.

EDIT: what's the situation with fly posting in Manc anyway...it can get severely scarey and dangerous in belfast...the 2 big promoters who run all the big gigs employ thugs and they tear everyone smaller's stuff down and get very nasty with the people themselves.....including giving a jazzdude I know a phone call to explain that any more posters and the attendance would be the the least of his worries on the night.......put, he said, in a manner worthy od dino vercotti "as it is mr $JAZZER I don't recall the date of your event, and as long as i see no more postsers for it, that will remain the case. And that would be to your advantage" or something.

[1]it should be noted that i was aware of and in utter awe of, Mr Hannet's exceptional band control technique, long before 24hpp. I'm not nealy as big a cunt or as big a genius tho.

I've heard the same in MancLand.Never fancied it! Even if I didn't "sleep with the fishes",I've heard the fines being from £50 to a bloody grand!

I'm looking at the publicity channels at the moment. Tying in with Cancer Research means we get all their publicity channels as well. There will still be a lot to do in and around Manchester for sure, so all advice and help appreciated.

Before I can go too far advanced with this though, I need some definites, like venue and date. Still looking at Jabez Clegg over Easter, whether it should be Easter Saturday rather than Monday we'll have to see.

I'll have to look on train schedules tonight see if they are running as regular on the Monday.

Thanks Google for bringing this one back up! How simple it all seemed back then. Besides Manchester as the choice of venue, we managed to pull the rest of it off I think, just about.

It's all gone very quiet on the ULU owing us money front, the cost of pursuing the debt is probably greater than the debt itself now.
