Personally, I'm not in favour. Thought this was a one-off at the QEH, but don't like the idea of going up to Mancland already knowing that's what we're likely to get. First and foremost, I'm a New Order fan. Of the current take on Joy Division songs they're performing I think only Transmission sits level pegging live with the likes of Crystal, Regret or Temptation in the set. Just seems like a pointless exercise to me. Almost the same as saying, we're only gonna play tracks of Movement and Brotherhood tonight - and we'll make sure the audience know in advance. Just what the point is, I don't know? Wibble.

Resounding no from me. I've never been in favour of JD songs appearing regularly in the set as it is, and as much as I love JD, they finished in 1980, any NO versions don't have the full package.

a big NO

its beyond me why they are doing it.

I think it's a bad idea too.

I reckon a select few JD numbers should be held back and only played on special occasions such as the anniversary of IC's death or birthday. Wasn't that what they did in the 80s? Big JD fan here but there's only about two songs I think New Order can do justice to live and they are Transmission and Isolation. In general, Barney's voice just doesn't suit the majority of Joy Division's work.

It's like the band are in full-on nostalgia mode these days since QEH and this upcoming "Control" film. What worries me is there's all this talk of how great JD was and endless anecdotes regarding Ian but little talk of new NO material. They don't seem to be bothered about looking to the future, it all seems to have become about banging out Atmosphere for the 100th time :(

I just hope all this misty eyed Joy Division nostalgia won't delay the release of new New Order material (I.e. proper songs and not another True Faith remix please!).

Just another example of how idle they are. JD set means minimal input from anything other than guitars which means an easy change for the roadies on the night, fair enough but they could do AoC, Ceremony, AIIWIW, DNE etc but again they can't be arsed putting any effort in and rehearsing.

Very disappointed with 20 minutes and JD set. I wasn't particularly excited over this because of the venue, now even more pissed off. What time to go in, suppose they'll attract us early then keep us in. There isn't even a decent bar in the place it's a bloody ice hockey stadium. Pity the poor bugger making a trip over from SPain, or anyone else travelling for that matter.

Shouldn't be surprised though, they're just lazy buggers. Let's just look forward to NOOL day.

I don't think Barney's vocals are any replacement for Ian,if anything Hooky comes close on Movement. As a whole JD set, looking forward to it,in that I never saw JD live, apart from my bootleg "Here Are The Young Men" DVD.And I never saw Peel Day.And I was a little hazy at Apollo gig,due to copious amounts of booze. But as a regular fixture? No we want NO! And I want more keyboards!

Definite NO!! Jeez , as Alistair said ,only Transmission and Isolation sound great done by New Order.

And i'm very dissapointed if it is the case that they're only going to do JD at Manc v Cancer

Are you serious??? I'm not very happy about this either but wouold rather be in the presence of Barney doing the knuckle shuffle than hang around with the lame-arse no-lifes that populate this place.

Martin, I realise a double penalty miss has raised your stress levels this weekend so I'll allow you this. To clarify what I was meaning, given the choice I'd rather see New Order songs performed by a tribute band than 20 minutes of JD ones murdered by NO in a shite venue etc etc. Since they lost a rarity/novelty value they just don't do it for me.

Novelty would be good though.

Really, I don't like those JD songs in a NO set. They just don't fit in. A complete JD set is even worse, I really fear they're destroying those songs. Stupid as it sounds, that's my opinion. Hearing Atmosphere with all the whoops feels like a kick in the face, I have no need for that. Don't get me wrong, I like those whoops, they perfectly fit in to almost any NO song, let's say like Touched, Crystal or the like, I caught myself whooping during those songs in Barcelona and in Hyde Park, but absolutely sure, I would never whoop to a song like Decades, Atmosphere or so.

Here are the young men, whoop, a weight on their shoulders, yeahhh, come ooooon!

Keep the whoops where they belong! Play a NO gig, with NO songs!

they can do and play whatever they want and this is what they will do - i suppose...It was nice to hear them playing old JD material many years after Ian died and just because they were their songs too! a whole set with JD material, played by NO is obviously a strange project...And i don't easily the real reason of this idea..Maybe to support Control ??? and some JD songs are so far from what we usely see/and get from Barney...But anyway idon't know the man:\ohwell: ther's maybe a Barney Dark side - darkest than the one he showed us with his N.O performances. His charisma is different than Ian's.He 's not this hightly expressive singer but it can be a way to try.PLay JD material in a different style (like they did with Isolation) is an interesting experience.THis is maybe what they wanna do ??? LWTUSA or ATmosphere or even SHe's lost Control are not very far from the JD'versions.Digital also. It's nice when u see them playing these songs on stage but it would be nice too to hear them doing it in a more personal way...(pourquoi pas ?)

No!!!!!!!!! I'd prefer a whole Technique or Low Life set.

New Order aren't Joy Division. Simple.

NO may be the best JD tribute act in the world, but to only play JD songs is self-defeating. To play only JD songs means theya re looking back instead of looking forward, and that's the beginning of the end for any band - becoming a nostalgia act.

No! I don't fancy the idea of crossing almost 2,000 miles just to see a JD tribute band. :nono:

If its a short set and they play them with a modicum of care and respect for absent friends, I think it would be worth the money. If Mr Sumner puts his whooping hat on and massacres them (e.g. HP LWTUA) then he deserves a good kick in the conkers! Isnt it the reality that most fans are solely NO ones of the modern era? Dont think I'd be too chuffed going to see Peter Gabriel and hear him churn out 1970's Genesis numbers without warning..

NObabe wrote: No! I don't fancy the idea of crossing almost 2,000 miles just to see a JD tribute band. :nono:

I agree. What also is confusing to me is their re-naming themselves JD to do songs for Control...didn't they make a pact during the JD days that if any member left the band that it would cease to be called JD forever? Is Ian resurrecting himself for Control?

They've got the right to play whatever they want.

New Order in a sense is Joy Division… don't forget about that.

Of course the voice of Ian Curtis was special, nobody deny it.

But some of you actually paid to see a set of Joy Division by New Order, and it wasn't that bad… was it ? Cause it didn't sounds like.

I'm ready to hear and to see a set of Joy Division by New Order because I'm basically a New Order fan and I'll take any chances to see them performing good music.

"it wasn't bad was it?"

You obviously have never heard the Hyde Park version of "LOVE! LOVE WILL TEAR US APART! YEAH! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!", which, all things considered, was about as enjoyable for me and everyone else who's commented on it, about as respectful as pissing on a statue of Chrust.

whoever Chrust is, by the way. If they must do JD songs, they can at the very least not make them sound like the singer is a motivational coach for a sports team.

I'm not talking about a specific song… I think that the tribute to John Peel was good…

*I wish I could've seen Joy Division on stage, but I was 8 when Ian died… I'm I supposed to appreciate any JD songs performing by any bands but New Order… No, I don't*

I agree that I'd like fair warning were I going to a NO gig and they were going to play the golden oldies with whoops and cowbells and all that. Not that I don't think they have a right to play the songs or anything , but it's a great mental/aural adjustment to paying 80$ to see them playing decent versions of their own songs, nevermind paying 80$ to see whoops and cowbells on "Shadowplay" or "Twenty Four Hours"...

Oh man, that's funny.

Still, there's a perverse pleasure in seeing them enjoying themselves while playing the songs that were once considered "a bit heavy to listen to, these days". I missed HP, but I heard enough of it.

Having suffered their butchering of JD songs for over twenty years now, I can safely say that it really wouldn’t bother me if they never did any of them again! They’ve only ever done Transmission and Decades justice. The trouble is, it’s not just the singing that is the problem. The songs are always sloppily played, riddled with bum notes, the drum patterns have been simplified to pretty much seeming the same rather than the originals (take Digital and Shadowplay for example). The songs don’t have the intensity that made them special first time around, and they are just runs through by numbers, which really isn’t satisfactory. They aren’t paying homage to their former incarnation with respectful representations, they are turning out lazy and sloppy half-remembered and probably unrehearsed parody versions.

And therein lies the problem. They can’t be arsed anymore to put the effort in and rehearse some New Order material. I am seriously in two minds about whether to bother travelling up for this one on Saturday if they are going to be inflicting another 20 minutes of half-jams a la JD on us. The ticket money’s already gone to a good cause.

Thats the problem to me - at Reading he'd made the effort and largely took some care with the vocal delivery but in general he cant carry the songs off. Maybe thats his gut pressing on his diaphragm, maybe its nerves or maybe as you say he cant be arsed. Whatever it is its just a letdown and gets a '5 out of 10, needs to try harder'. Fifty buck songs deserve better than 50 cent delivery, surely? They could be so good, if they just made the effort..

Looks like I've opened a can of worms here. I think people misunderstood my original point totally. It's not Sumner's whoops or whatever that made me initially say I don't want an all-JD set, it's just that I don't think the quality of the material - period - isn't up to much of what New Order have done themselves since. Given the choice, I'd rather have Crystal than She's Lost Control, would rather see Temptation that LWTUA, and it's got fcuk all to do with how Barney sings said tracks. I just don't think some of the JD stuff is in the same league. Full stop. Only Tranmission cuts the mustard these days. That can stay.

Curtis died, kids. Time to get over it. :thumb:

Bit gutted that what I thought would be a one off at the Peel gig is being done again.

AND 20 minutes is a fuckin slap in the face an all, but to make up for it they could at least give the 'ardcore Ceremony, AOC, Sunrise and close with Temptation.

To be fair, they do what they like and always have, and as much as it pisses is aff a lot of the time, we still come back for more

2005 was a good excuse to indulge in nostalgia cos it was 25 years since Ian and Joy Division died. But this is 2006 and New Order should concentrate on New Order.

She's Lost Control used to be an intense song but now it just plods along, with random yelling and shouts, while Steve's drumming just aint what it used to be. Same applies to Shadowplay.

They should rotate Transmission, Isolation, and Warsaw around the encores at certain gigs, and ditch LWTUA, Atmosphere and Shadowplay altogether.

Everyone would prefer songs like Run, Sunrise, Age of Consent, Perfect Kiss, Your Silent Face to the same old JD massacres.

I worry what Hurt would sound like played off tape, and performed by nice modern gear, I love Hurt more the more raw the version is. Barney's little TPK pastiche at Apollo14 was THE musical highlight of my life, I tried to sing Hooky's bassline over it, but tears choked me up. If they played Hurt (and didn;t cunt it up) I think every atom in my body may simultaneously turn to energy killing all in this hemisphere.

I think that NO playing COME ON! sets of JD songs only YEAH is rubbish WHOOP!

I'm all for it. I think the material stands up, they play them well and it's a shameless nostalgia trip to hear 3/4 of the best band ever play the best material ever. I can't agree with the comments that Steve's drumming isn't what it was - he was absolutely on FIRE at Brixton.

Given the choice of hearing them play ANYTHING, I'd go for a mix of JD, Movement-era stuff and some other stuff that's not been played for ages like Lonesome Tonight, AoC, Leave Me Alone. But that won't happen, so if the choice is between 'greatest hits' yet again and a JD set, I'm up for the latter. Of course it's not the same as JD in 79/80 - it's what it is - New Order in 2006 playing great material that is still powerful and moving.

I reckon there will be some surprises on Sat too.

It won't kill anybody to have to listen to some full Joy Division sets. You can't deny their history. It's still a part of who they are, and if they want to play Joy Division songs, all the power to them.

But doesnt that go against the whole new order thing? After Curtis killed himself, they started again as New Order. Only rarely did they play JD songs.

Plus, they cant do them properly. At the moment, its just some middle aged guys rolling through some songs. I could deliver a better vocal version of atmosphere than Bernard does, such is the lack of intensity.

You heard it here first, folks!

Diggy Mike will have his recordng equipment at Dry Bar: Uncle Liam's hi-intensity version of Atmosphere will be available to download on Sunday morning.

Liam, in case you can't remember them, here are the lyrics:

(xylophone intro)

Oh what an atmosphere! I love a party with a happy atmosphere, So let me take you there, And you and I'll be dancin' in the cool night air!

Well we're at the dancin' party, And you're out there havin' fun, And your girl is there beside you, And you feel like number one!

So get your body movin'... 'Cos tonight has just begun... OH WHOA! Let it go! WHOOA! Let it show.... Aaah Aaah Aaah Aaah!

Oh what an atmosphere! I love a party with a happy atmosphere, So let me take you there, And you and I'll be dancin' in the cool night air! OH OH Oh what an atmosphere! I love a party with a happy atmosphere, yeah mmmm, Music everywhere, And soon we'll be dancin' in the cool night air!

Now we're out here all together, Everybody's hand in hand, We can make it last forever, When we're dancin' with the gang! Well you've got your favourite records, And Frankie's got his band!

HUH!!! OH WHOA! Let it go! WHOOA! Let it show.... Aaah Aaah Aaah Aaah!

Oh what an atmosphere! I love a party with a happy atmosphere, So let me take you there, And you and I'll be dancin' in the cool night air! OH OH Oh what an atmosphere! I love a party with a happy atmosphere, mmmm yeah, Music everywhere, And soon we'll be dancin' in the cool night air!

(Riotous eighties party noises)

(Repeat chorus and fade out)

I think we should all be very grateful that they're still out there performing live. It's great that they are able to play anything from their fantastic legacy of effectively being two separate bands. I cannot think of any other act that have that to draw on. Am happy to hear Shadowplay or anything else. Perhaps not Rock the Shack though.

Plus, they cant do them properly. At the moment, its just some middle aged guys rolling through some songs. I could deliver a better vocal version of atmosphere than Bernard does, such is the lack of intensity.

Surely the whole 'new order thing' was also largely about not giving a fcuk, about excuding a certain nonchalance. I've never really associated New Order with any particular intensity.

But then, I'm not an impressionable yoot! :thumb:

The 'New Order Thing' is whatever they want it to be, continuously evolving. At this point they want to do some JD songs - fine! There was never a plan - that's part of why they're great.

Well yes, they *are* middle aged, you're right there. If they roll through anything on autopilot these days it's Blue Monday, not the JD stuff. Looking at Hooky's face during Warsaw at Brixton, there was no way he was 'rolling through' the song. That was fucking intense. And you know, I think Barney feels the same way - unfortunately with him, it can come out in a series of whoops and 'come-on's. I think it's because he's never been a natural frontman and it can seem forced. He sort of mixes up what's required to whip up a festival crowd with what it takes to blast out an old JD number. It's a measure of, even after all these years, how uncertain he is as a performer. But all that said, I love the fact that these songs are being performed again.

Yes and no really... Despite having 'followed' NO for nearly 20 years, I have never seen them play live, and obviously never saw JD play, so an all JD set would be good and I wouldn't have anything to compare it against, and the 'NO greatest hits' set would be fantastic as well, but I can see how those who go to every gig or who have seen them a lot over the years would want something a bit different occasionally and would like to see /hear some different tracks given a go... and done with a suitable intensity, etc., BUT, as several people have said, the band have never really given a fuck what anyone else thinks, so why change now... We all have our own ideal set list, but that ain't necessarily gonna agree with what the band themselves want to do... I'm just thankful that I still have the chance to see them, but I'm sure when I do finally get along to a few gigs, I will also be campaigning for more variety and for them to dust off Cries And Whispers or something...

NO !! Its always nice to think along linear lines - JD starts, JD stops, NO starts and continues. whereas sometimes things are more organic and 3 dimensional. However, to go back to JD is regressive and lazy. Barney just cant do JD songs justice, I think NO's back catalogue is so big now they should concentrate on older or less familiar tracks in an encore for example rather than do JD songs. Its a bit morbid and cheap. In a similar fashion has anyone really accepted Phil Cunningham as a part of New Order yet? I think the biggest criticism of the recent manchester appolo gig was a lack of keyboards. WFTSC - NO's best song since Regret, was ruined by a lack of keyboards. Some things are best left in the past (a bit like ringing up old girlfriends to see if the magic is there. It isnt - they have got fat & ugly have 3 kids and married a loser)

DC wrote: I'm all for it. I think the material stands up, they play them well and it's a shameless nostalgia trip to hear 3/4 of the best band ever play the best material ever. I can't agree with the comments that Steve's drumming isn't what it was - he was absolutely on FIRE at Brixton.

Steve does a good job on LWTUA, Transmission and Atmosphere but She's Lost Control is too slow for me, while Shadowplay's drum pattern has been replaced by a standard beat, as someone said earlier.

Given the choice between NO playing JD or no NO I would of course see them. But they should pick their songs and their moments carefully and remember that people have come to see New Order.

They don't care anymore! Well maybe Hooky does. I suppose we are lucky that they are still doing any gigs, we know Bernard doesn't like doing them, so I suppose it is a bit much to expect them to put some effort in!

i expect to be treated to an uncle liam rendition of atmosphere next time we speak by phone.

Considering you are never on msn anymore, i would consider a phone conversation unlikely :D

Not unless they re-record the tunes as NO-Joy or something. Fill a football pitches with fans and re-record the tunes or let them be. surely the big they realise that we would go see them anywhere, anytime, in any weather. But for the remaing 3/4 to play Joy Division just say so. they've got the ability to blow away all punk bands of today if they wanted to. Steve's druming is untouchable. And yeah, we'd follow Bernard and Hooky where ever they wanted to go whoops incl.
so maybe if they were to turn the lights low and knock us down with Hurt then NO Hand of God while bringing back Gillian for True Faith on an enormous Republic advert board behind them. Just go all out. read * * band** . would much rather a botched up, stripped down Peel session than a re-mix by grand-mystro-funky-foo but having Hooky 'yes Love, I do enjoy myself' extending a tune to ten brilliant minutes also works. But no all Joy Division sets unless applied well. somehow without Ian.
