Hi, fellows. NOOLers from the portuguese forum would like to record upcoming gigs in Brazil. What's the best way? What kind of recorder is recommendable?

I use a Sony Hi-MD unit (MZ-RH1). Any unit with line in and/or mic in which can record in linear PCM will do though. Most important are the mics (frequency response, sound pressure limit). If you use a battery box (with or without bass roll of) you can record through line in and your mics will withstand higher SPL's and will have a higher dynamic range.

This is great, it records straight to wav, but you need a compact flash card, I have a 4GB one. £85 You will also need a mic- I use Sony Micro ECM-719 £60

Nope, the newer MZ-RH1 ... but I've got an MZ-RH10 too ;) I now use the RH1 for recording (much easier to use - it remembers previous recording volume settings - and very stealthy) and the RH10 for playing (the jog dial and the big screen rule)
I use a Sony MD recorder and a ICOM scanner for IEM recordings. I really hope this winter they decide to do a small North American tour so I can tape from Bernard's feed.

I use an Sony Mini Disc MZ-RH10, however after seeing and hearing the results Alex gets I had to go and buy a M Audio 24/96 Microtrack.
Got it today
Probably ebay the Mini Disc now :)

Yet to record anything on it yet Tim, however I have heard the results of Alex’s efforts and it beats Mini Disc hands down.
I will use it this weekend in Amsterdam to record System 7 and let you know how I get on

Sound quality hasn't got anything to do with the unit you're recording on. The mics are much more important !

I checked that Samson unit out, it got some pretty bad reviews. That M-audio Microtrack looks amazing. The price is alittle high ($450 Can, but since I broke my md recorder outside of Massey Hall taping Sigur Ros I got to get something) and you would need to get a 2 Gig card which I have not seen a price on.

It means that if the price is correct, here in Brazil the same equipment would cost £212!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rubbish! Why not use an old alba cassette recorder then. Minidisc compresses the sound, whereas dat or the maudio microtrack record at a higher sampling rate than cd!
Minidisc players are not manufactured any more, its a dying format, like dat. it took me months to get a sat machine & there are no affordable new ones anywhere in the world!
Once minidisc is on its last legs, the broadcasters will buy up all the remaining units to play their archive on. If you have a minidisc recorder i reccomend you buy a rack unit to play your stuff on while you still have time!

Hi-MD units like mine can record in linear PCM, which is the same sampling rate as cd's.
