Yes it did happen, a Student Union Ball. Not sure of date (believed to have been March/April 1985). Nobody recorded it as far as I am aware, never ever been able to find a recording.
I'm not entirely convinced.
I can't see how a New Order gig could happen, and no one even know a date for it. Especially not in the UK, and not in a year like 85/86!
The Melody Maker also had a photo of this gig in some noddy mag they knocked up about New Order in the early 90's, which itself was full of inaccuracies. If the Melody Maker had a man at the gig, why didn't they review it?!
How many people knew about the 'secret' Reading Uni Student Ball gig in 1987 by comparison?!
Oh God I just knew this was going to happen. I cant remember it being talked about I must admit and I used to speak to Factory nearly every week between 84-86!!

Al, you are right saw them in 1982 at Brixton, on and off in 83 and alot in 84-86. Tailed off a bit at the end of the 80's. In fact last gig was SECC until I saw them again at the Apollo in 2001. God...I missed them!! Seriously though as I am sure many will agree is that you just did'nt know what to expect from them.Into the 90's the setlists were getting pretty much the same night after night and I only know this from about 2 years ago when I started to trade tapes/cdrs again.
I first became aware of this gig when the tape was advertised as being "soon" on a list in early 1986. Barney's comments about Cambridge at the Oxford gig in 1986 may have some signifance as well.
It is certainly unusual for a UK gig to have taken place without anyone even getting on the guest list, given the circles in which we have knowledge, so I do remain a bit sceptical, but the glass remains half full and there is still a potential one more gig to get !

The parallels here are amazing - I started around the same time, and my last show before 2001 was the NEC in 1989, the day after SECC !
Even more scarey Tim is the fact that I got it wrong. It was not the SECC but the NEC that was my last gig before 2001 although like you I did do the SECC as well!
Does'nt anyone know (personally) Andy who was the roadie during the 80's. He used to be front man in the band Life surely he would know if it happened, and who was Hookeys "helper" on stage was it "Dave"?

Blimey, you're behind the times! Andy (Robinson) is now managing New Order, along with Rebecca Boulton.
Stash - who doesn't post here - is in regular contact with Andy, and has made a few house-visits to drool over his New Order bits & pieces.

I was always thought this was a piss-take (people always confusing Oxford and Cambridge, certainly geographically even though they're miles and miles apart), as it was supposedly such a 'bad tempered gig'!
Not sure why this one goes down in the annals of history as such, it just seemed to me to be the band (for 'band' read basically 'Barney') in a strop from about Shellshock onwards with no real explanation as to their actions. Still, has to be one of the most explosive audience reactions to Ceremony I've witnessed after all the on-stage stropping beforehand.. .
Does anyone know WHERE in Cambridge Uni the gig took place? My brother was there at the time, knew about New Order (he had bought PC&L in '83) but he doesn't remember the gig.
Funny how this all parallels. I last saw the Order in 1985 (Hammersmith Palais), haven't seen them since, will go to the next gig I can, and really only got back into them this year after a 15-year hiatus. :)

Did you see the encore? Did ACR really come back on with New Order? I only found that out recently.. . . I was well away on a tube by then. . .
I saw the encore at the Palais..about 40mins after they left the stage and yes ACR did come for the encore. It was deserted from memory only about 300 people left.

Don't remember that. He did get hit by an empty pint-pot as he introduced Face Up though, didn't he? Ironic as he was just saying how lucky we were for one more song, or something?
I think we ended up walking from Paddington back to Kings X at two in the morning, or something, which seemed a right slog for a teenager who weren't that familiar with London, but it something I do all the time now from work (though not at two in the morning, thankfully!).

I was off by then too, didn't realise ACR came back. S**t. Anyone got any idea on where (or which college) they might have played at Cambridge Uni?
this does need confirming.. i did quite a bit of gigging in 85/86 and this one seems a mystery.. i used to get pre-warning and sometimes tickets for gigs from paul cons who at the time was manager of the hacienda..( he went to uni with my bro )...i have completely lost touch with him which is unfortunate as he would know...i will see if my bro still talks to him.
it just seems strange that there is an awful lot of knowledge on this site and nobody can confirm if and when this gig happened. tim..i presume if a recording surfaced of the above mentioned it might be worth getting hold of !!!

did you or tim attend this ??? what a strange night it was...it took us hours to find the venue which was shite..a strange crowd and a weird pre-gig disco where they played a few order songs to warm the crowd up...

Very strange night, crap gig, perverse encore, weird atmosphere. Found out about it through a mate of a mate a couple of days before - helped knowing a student there !
Regarding the Cambridge gig. I dont really have an answer if it took place or not, but I must admit I think not from what the NOOLers have said. Also just a thought Tim,Al,Mike,Paul would all probably agree (well I hope so) that it is fair to say that New Order used to do a "low Key" venue before or shortly after a advertised one. As there is no major venuearound Cambridge it may be safe to say that it did not happen.....however did they do a 05 June 1982 Provinssirock Festival, Seinajoki, Finland. Where the rumour was "for the money". God, I wish someone could say yes/no so I can at least keep it on my wants list or delete the bloody thing!!
Did the Finnish show happen ? According to Mark (arse from elbow) Johnson it did, but there's no tape, that much is certain.
You're right about the small show before the bigger one, it's been a consistent pattern. Until 1988 !!
Tim, pretty sure about the Finnish gig. On e-bay a few weeks back a guy was selling a flyer for the gig. I had a chat and he said he did attend.....and guess what - he has no tape of it!!!
