ATR is Alex The Red, Alex Staszko, bootlegger exraordinaire and friend to many on here, promoter of Homage amongst other things, and a good lad to know.

As Tim says, Alex Staszko. Probably the Best Known New Order fan? Everyone seems to have met him as some point in the 80's and beyond. Used to take a blow up skeleton (Ian) to gigs and has been known to adopt the odd Viking helmet. Hooky's spoken to him from the stage a couple of times, at least - incl Nynex 98, Stockholm 01. Got us VIP guestlists for all the European dates last year so top bloke to be friends with.
Seen New Order maybe 70-80 times but they're just one of his many passions. Has also seen the Fall 170+ times (including following them on tour in GREECE!) but kicked them into touch a few years back. And follows the likes of Puressence, Ladytron and most recently did every date on Interpol's short tour which took him from Liverpool to Edinburgh to Belfast and then Dublin, which is a nice way to spend a long weekend. Shall probably spend the whole of 2004 following Kraftwerk halfway across the globe.
So he is the Puressence "Alex" as well!? I believe he was selling a signed copy of "Offshore" on E-bay not long ago that went for a song...
We need a date for this Cambridge show then, as well as the other one that nobody knew about. Somebody must have been there ?

Yeah, that would certainly be him. He's put them on at the Wychwood a couple of times, and when they played the Scala in the summer it was, like, the sixth time he'd seen them that week.
Oh, he's also the 'Chameleons' Alex as well!
In short, he's a legend on the Manchester music scene. Now if only he was a bit older and had been recording gigs from 1978 onwards......

Then he'd probably have been a twat in a raincoat pondering the 'importance' of it all, and would've stayed well clear of New Order after the hooligans moved in from 1982 onwards and gigs got a little too rowdy for his tastes! Mark Johnson anyone?

I know what you mean AL...as a JOY DIVISION fan that then followed NEW ORDER i am surprised how few have EVER shown their face here.Maybe it is the AGE thing!Mind you i never owned a raincoat and hated all the DOOM and GLOOM merchants.I just loved the music and their songs.Still i suppose i am not what anyone would describe as normal.

I had the old trench coat - only gave it to a charity shop last week as a matter of fact. Always been a JD fan.

Molly had met him a few times. Don't think he knew him, per se. Always sounded a bit of a loner to me. Wonder what ever became of him and whether he has any interest whatsoever these days?
Was he basically a fan who wrote a book, or was he an obsessive journo (which is what I'd always assumed before)??

The closest we've had here to anyone who followed the band around was Chris Woods (was that his name?) who'd done lots of JD, lots of early New Order, as well as the Brixton dates in 2001, I think he said, so he still had an interest many years on. Sounded a bit of a Geezer though and certainly not one of the doom and gloom brigade who've subsequently attached themselves to the history.

Right again Al!! Alex is a big Chameleons fan and have seen him a few times at the Wytchwood. Now, they are a good band. Got plenty of their tapes!!

I was right then ! Lancaster was a very weird one, as nobody seemed to know about it even at the university, and we only found out the night before, tickets were easy to come by if you knew it was on. Alex was notable by his absence at Lancaster (no "We All Stand" after every song !). Quite a good show though, including the famous Barry White quote.
sorry to drag this old chestnut up again but its really pissing me off.. had a glance on the waterrrat site tonight and found an intersting link on the side. there was supposedly a band who supported on the night who were called " compared to what "...this was the pink,punk and pimms event on the 18 jun 85. it even has some pictures of the night...they look decidedly dodgy and question the validity of these...but who knows !!

joking apart i would love someone to come on here and post a full report of this gig. had my bro round from sheff this weekend and we have been discussing this cambridge thing...its really pissing him as hes not convinced and whilst not attending every gig 85-87 tended to get the nod from paul cons about every up-coming gig.

That mirrors the comment that Alex wrote, that Andy Robinson assumed people knew about it, when they didn't. Not sure Cambridge balls are open to the gen public though, are they?! And, from distant memory of mates attending Oxbridge colleges I believe end-of-year ball tickets way back in the 80's usually fetched around the 100 notes mark per person, such was the significance of the event?!
Just checked up on this and a mate who graduated from Oxford in 1989 had to pay 140 notes(!) for his end of term ball ticket. Mind, it was a 'double' ticket but still, it's a bit pricey. And they were strictly for students only. And black-tie!
So basically nae chance that any of the 'hoi polloi' could've got into the Cambridge gig, unless you were in with the band in the first instance.
Imagine that though, kicking off down the front in your black-tie! ;)
