Quality Venues that New Order have NOT played???

I'd love to see 'em play in the Crystal Ballroom up in Portland, a really nice venue to play (even Ian from the Bunnymen made some comments about how great it was). It's just a big open space on the second floor of a building, a very spacious wooden floor just made for dancing.....

Taking their conceptualization of airiness to an uncommon level, Tegen and Ringler incorporated a special "floating" floor into the ballroom's design. This unusual floor consisted of a layer of beautiful maple boards, under which were laid a series of rockers (like those of a rocking chair). Ball bearings were attached to the two ends of each rocker. The action of this mechanical device was a very fluid, up-and-down movement, which could be adjusted by a ratcheted gear to best suit different dance styles. Testimonials of many long-time dance patrons of the ballroom claim it was "like dancing on a cloud."

I live on a godforsaken island the nearest decent size venue to me would be in Lancaster and they've played there. I wonder if Forum 28 Barrow in Furness would class as a decent venue.

My town? Well, the bastards haven't played in Stoke since '83, so they could return to the Victoria Hall (approx 1800-2000 capacity), or failing that there's Trentham Gardens just up the road which holds about 3-3500 all-standing. It'd be fun to see 'em at Keele Uni, though, with an all-standing capacity of about 1000 and a right rowdy little sweatbox on a good night (Tim'll back me up on this as I believe he worked there for a while), but it'll never happen.

I lived in Norwich for a few years, and I don't think they've played there since a one-off in the early 80s: the UEA is pretty sizeable, and despite being inbred knobheads Nofolk gig-goers appreciate a good show - Public Enemy were blistering there when I saw 'em approx six months ago (in front of 100% clean-cut white m/c audience!!)

Here in Aberdeen, there's the Music Hall that they've already done ('86?), but there's an arena-thing on the edge of town (the AECC or summat) which holds about 4000 I think, so that's more viable than The Lemon Tree (wonderful venue, about 500 capacity).

None of these will, of course, ever happen.

You don't say!? I would've though a show at Keele SU would be un-turndownable!! What was Gretton thinking?

Ended up with The House of Love, The Wedding Present and Blur/The Family Cat instead. Three sell-out nights instead of one memorable one.

I was at both the Blur/Family Cat 'indie fest' day and the HoL show - surely the latter was never a sell-out?? My memory is of it being depressingly half-full?

Did you arrange the early '89 Inspirals show as well, Tim?

November 88, Inspirals and Jesus Jones in same week. I was involved, but not responsible for the bookings. Ticketing system was strange for HOL in Jan '89 - all the student allocation was shifted, and we had a great night on the bar, but not all the public tickets were sold.

Jesus Jones were better live on the night than the Inspirals in all honesty. I went out and bought their album the next day, played it once and swapped it for a Fall bootleg. It was wank. (JJ, not The Fall)

Yeah, even in my pre-legal drinking days (I was about 15 for most of the gigs we've been talking about) we could tell the beer was hopelessly watered down - I always used to wonder whether they just did that on gig nights or if Keele's undergraduate population always glugged on weak swill.

When did you finish working there, Tim? Were you anything to do with the Bob Geldof show at the arse end of 1990 - still my greatest claim to fame is that I danced with Sir Bob (who told me to "fuck off") and almost stole his shoes.

Depended on the beer - lager always tasted like that there. I only drank bottles or cans, a lot easier. I was still there until mid-93, didn't have anything to do with the Geldof show as I was working at the Wheatsheaf that night. Did the Primal Scream show where the crowd canned them off immediately before what became Loaded.....they were not a happy bunch backstage !

Aha - did you do sound at the Wheatsheaf? Whenever we'd go there we'd always ask the soundman to record the gig for us - there was one bloke who'd laways do it without fail (once you'd bought him a few beers), another who'd always refuse, and another who'd drink your beer, agree to do it, and then claim he'd 'forgotten' at the end.

And which of the following did you work on (Keele): Carter USM (actually, i know you did that one); Neds Atomic Dustbin (March '91?); Kingmaker (sometime in 91/92); that rubbish quasi-grunge band supported by Sheep on Drugs....Daisy Chainsaw; The Sandkings (dunno, 92-ish?)? No, I was working for JJ Securities at the Wheatsheaf, remember them, the guys in the yellow coats at the Victoria Ground and *ahem* Burslem. Easy ale money, nobody messed, and if they did, big Kev with the spiderweb fist tattoos or Roy Procter got in and sorted it before you had a chance to !

Bomb Disneyland (same bill as Blur, Family Cat, Beef cried off at the last minute because Sally had lost her voice). They were superb.

Brum Academy (previously the Hummingbird) would be a good venue for them 2000ish with a balcony. Seen some stormers there like the Pixies and Mondays). Al mentioned it was a possible on the 2001 tour but never happened

Has to be better than the aircraft hanger NEC.

They like aircraft hangers though, always gives them an excuse for crap performance, blame it on the poor acoustics !

Yeah, that Carter gig: I must've lept from the stage about 50 bloody times - you weren't working the crash barrier were you? Mind you, I was Vini Reilly skinny in them days so no-one got hurt. I remember chatting to a couple of the Neds who mingled in the crowd until about 15 minutes before they went on - nice guys. Didn't think much of the gig, though: it all sounded the same to these lugholes. Mind you, they did have a seriously hardcore following, as all those Brum-'grebo' bands did at the time: recall havng to wade over about 50 rucksacks on the way in belonging to the loons who followed them to every date on the tour. Actually, recall getting harrassed by loads of kids in cut-off shorts and multiple pierciongs (in the days before such things were commonplace) begging if they could crash on my floor...

Just about every major city in America has a refurbished old theater or dancehall (balconies, painted ceilings, gilded facades) of the 1500-2000 capacity. The Fillmore in San Francisco is probably the most famous. I think New Order could really rekindle some interest in America with a tour like that, but I doubt they ever will. In fact I doubt they'll ever do another US tour quite frankly, b/c I don't think they need the money, and I can't see them selling out any of the amphitheaters that they've played their last three (four if you count area one) US tours. REM's latest tour was played to half-full theaters across this country and while they're not the global force that they once were, they are still at least in the public eye with an album every couple of years. And I definitely don't see them wanting to deal with the logistics (e.g. cramped dingy dressing rooms and the like) involved with the type of venue that I was talking about above.

Winnipeg Stadium!!! Why doesn't New Order ever come to Winnipeg? It's not like we're some little shit-town up in the Northwest Territories or anything...

The Rockgarden in Covent Garden and the Marquee would have been good (although JD did play the Marquee in March 79). Two quality small'ish London venues where early NO would have shone.

they should have played nottingham rock city between 85 and 88...i think they played it in 81 or 82..fantastic venue. i am also surprised they never played the leadmill in sheffield..( twas the best venue in the steel city ) i caught them at sheff uni and the infamously woeful city hall gig. i remember in 87 when my bro contacted me and said he heard they would be playing sheff again..we were both convinced it would be the leadmill. it turned out to be the nightclub on top of the car park..barry nobles roxy club. i am not saying it wasnt a good night it was..but the leadmill would and should have been the perfect new order venue. as for my home town, they played the blue note which holds about 26 people...during the mid to late 80s derby left them bereft of choices..the assembly rooms would have been nice but was more intersted in holding the lada classic snooker and max bygraves.

They ain't played my living room yet. :p

Didn't they also play The Dial in the early 80s, Paul? If they ever did a 'proper' tour, the Assembly Rooms would be a decent port of call. I've never been able to make up my mind about Rock City - been to some great gigs there but there's something about that place I just don't like. Probably the bar prices.

That would've been the original Marquee on Wardorf Street though, yes? I saw Revenge at the Marquee on Tottenham Court Road with about 20 people in attendance (there was NO ONE on the dancefloor for the support, Northside). Of course, the Marquee did resurface on Liverpool Road, but went bust (I think?) shortly after.

martin.. i am pretty sure they have never played the dial. acr and revenge both played the warehouse on friargate..but the dial im not so sure..the best host of progress in derby but as a venue for the order .

agreed the assembly rooms would be ideal for the order, good size standing area, quite a few seats for the elderly or not so keen.

the city hall gig was woeful because...oh where do i start. 1...horrendous venue. 2...line up of new order,billy bragg and abc. 3...see above line up,who comes on first at 8.00..(yes you guessed it ) 4...short set..(my bets would be they would have been back at fac51 for about 10pm latest)

the only good thing about the night was cabaret voltaire played the leadmill later on...awesome

CBGBs. not exactly 'quality,' but it certainly is, erm, an experience.

also the mercury cafe in denver. a great little venue. but when you've got red rocks, who needs anywhere else! (unless you're playing to a smaller crowd, of course.)
