Just about every major city in America has a refurbished old theater or dancehall (balconies, painted ceilings, gilded facades) of the 1500-2000 capacity. The Fillmore in San Francisco is probably the most famous. I think New Order could really rekindle some interest in America with a tour like that, but I doubt they ever will. In fact I doubt they'll ever do another US tour quite frankly, b/c I don't think they need the money, and I can't see them selling out any of the amphitheaters that they've played their last three (four if you count area one) US tours. REM's latest tour was played to half-full theaters across this country and while they're not the global force that they once were, they are still at least in the public eye with an album every couple of years. And I definitely don't see them wanting to deal with the logistics (e.g. cramped dingy dressing rooms and the like) involved with the type of venue that I was talking about above.

Winnipeg Stadium!!! Why doesn't New Order ever come to Winnipeg? It's not like we're some little shit-town up in the Northwest Territories or anything...
The Rockgarden in Covent Garden and the Marquee would have been good (although JD did play the Marquee in March 79). Two quality small'ish London venues where early NO would have shone.
they should have played nottingham rock city between 85 and 88...i think they played it in 81 or 82..fantastic venue. i am also surprised they never played the leadmill in sheffield..( twas the best venue in the steel city ) i caught them at sheff uni and the infamously woeful city hall gig. i remember in 87 when my bro contacted me and said he heard they would be playing sheff again..we were both convinced it would be the leadmill. it turned out to be the nightclub on top of the car park..barry nobles roxy club. i am not saying it wasnt a good night it was..but the leadmill would and should have been the perfect new order venue. as for my home town, they played the blue note which holds about 26 people...during the mid to late 80s derby left them bereft of choices..the assembly rooms would have been nice but was more intersted in holding the lada classic snooker and max bygraves.

That would've been the original Marquee on Wardorf Street though, yes? I saw Revenge at the Marquee on Tottenham Court Road with about 20 people in attendance (there was NO ONE on the dancefloor for the support, Northside). Of course, the Marquee did resurface on Liverpool Road, but went bust (I think?) shortly after.

Didn't they also play The Dial in the early 80s, Paul? If they ever did a 'proper' tour, the Assembly Rooms would be a decent port of call. I've never been able to make up my mind about Rock City - been to some great gigs there but there's something about that place I just don't like. Probably the bar prices.
And what was wrong with the City Hall gig?

Yep, Wardour Street. I only remember going there once, saw B-Movie, terrific band, anyone remember them?
martin.. i am pretty sure they have never played the dial. acr and revenge both played the warehouse on friargate..but the dial im not so sure..the best host of progress in derby but as a venue for the order .
agreed the assembly rooms would be ideal for the order, good size standing area, quite a few seats for the elderly or not so keen.
the city hall gig was woeful because...oh where do i start. 1...horrendous venue. 2...line up of new order,billy bragg and abc. 3...see above line up,who comes on first at 8.00..(yes you guessed it ) 4...short set..(my bets would be they would have been back at fac51 for about 10pm latest)
the only good thing about the night was cabaret voltaire played the leadmill later on...awesome
CBGBs. not exactly 'quality,' but it certainly is, erm, an experience.
also the mercury cafe in denver. a great little venue. but when you've got red rocks, who needs anywhere else! (unless you're playing to a smaller crowd, of course.)
