'another day goes by and all i do is cry'

[update]

hey no'ers,

long time no talk... (at least from me)..

after having been severely disappointed with the quality and selections on 'international' and 'retro', i decided to make my own..

anyways, as a byproduct of this process earlier this year,i placed several mp3 files up of alternate versions, mixes, and vinyl tracks for eventual inclusion on my compilation.. 'international 2'....

i know several of you expressed interest earlier, and patiently waited...well due to lack of employment (fixed now), and resources.. i couldn't get the singles/vinyl/cds to finish it off....

well, the good news is we're almost there...

seriously...

i've finalised the tracklisting (and barring maybe 1 or 2 minor changes its set)...i'm in the process of listening to the tracks again, since it's been quite a while...

if the vinyl re-mastering doesn't sound good, i'll go back and re-do some of them, hopefully without messing around with the equalization too much..

there are few people on this list that i'd worked out something with (the list owner, several of the major webmasters, and a few private people that i trade with first)...

if its good for them, we can work out something for those that are interested...

basically it will be a 4x80min cd set, spanning all their singles up until now..

the plan is have a cd-tree, and make it free for those that duplicate it..or for people to provide their own blanks..

NOTE ** please don't contact me yet, on how to obtain it, we'll get there...... **

THERE SHOULD BE NO MONEY/PROFIT for this project...i don't want to see it on ebay, or anywhere else being sold, because i check those also...and it will inhibit me in thinking about finishing the 20cd set of ALL the mixes, etc..(which is what 're-cycle' should have been)..

i'll post the updated listing of the tracks next...

later

(You're on the dirty.org boards. I like your posts, as I always learn something new.)

Here's the link to the 3-CD set I made to indoctrinate my friends to the world of Joy Division / New Order. http://www.waste.org/~beaucoup/neworder.htm . It's not earth-shattering for us lot, but they really like it.

(I know, I included "Liar." I like it, Shudup.)

wow...that's a Hurculean effort you seem to be ready to embark on...but I quite like the idea...

'the body that kills and hides'

[update]

hey no'ers,

well i've gone through a 'rough' preview of the 4 discs now..

disc / notes - status

disc 1 - done, sounds excellent

disc 2 - sounds excellent, need to check on 'world in motion (video version)' from laserdisc

also may switch 3:58 9 Ruined In A Day (radio edit) from the cd-single

for: ruined in a day (k-klass edit) 3:55 cd from the promo cd-single

since that mix is harder to come by...

disc 3 - sounds great, need to clean up 2 edits, 'dub-vulture', and 'bizarre dub triangle', and 'hurt 7" along with 'lonesome tonight 7"'

disc 4 - sounds great, i DONT have this track in a good enough format: 4:46 6 blue monday 95 (plutome dub)

i am debating about dropping it for one of these:

world in motion '96 (mark bell) 4:56 cd such a good thing 4:10 cd

i would REALLY like to put this on there, but i haven't found anyone with a good source for it:

sunrise (instrumental rough mix) ?:?? cs

=========================================================

PLEASE let me know if you have any thoughts, suggestions or ideas..

Keep up the good work:thumb:

hey -1 !!!

Glad to see you around here again. It was kinda b/c of you that I gave New Order a 'second chance' and now I am a reasonably big fan of theirs! (sorry, but NO are still behind Underworld and Bowie)

so is this a continuation of that project you were going to do all that time ago - or a new start?

Wow. That 4 series set sounds awesome. Good work man !

hey joe,

i started this project earlier this year...but i'm trying hard to finish it off now...

please check here for updates..

i'll post a message on rtsr, in case anyones interested...

hey no'ers,

well i'm finished burning the first 4 alpha discs to test out..

i've still got 1 more song left to do ('world in motion[video mix]'), and that should finish it off..

also, i'll be posting some descriptions, previews, and notices about the compilation....

the almost-final listing is up next...as i've made a few changes in tracks, and selected some other mixes for discs 3/4...

i've added these tracks:

  • 'ruined in a day' (k-klass edit)
  • 'sunrise' (rough instrumental mix)
  • 'world in motion '96 (mark bell remix)
  • removed 'blue monday 95' (plutome dub)
  • took out 'ruined in a day' (single edit)/(single remix)
  • 'world in motion' (subutteo dub)

i've also moved: 'the perfect pit' to the 4th disc as the 3rd disc was over 80min...

great work -1. i have only one suggestion.

Please do NOT include Ode to Joy and Rocking Carol. These are both irritating gimmicks and will totally destroy what looks like a great project. Please use that space to include other, more worthy edits/versions...perhaps Theme credited to Be Music. You are about to make a mistake you will REGRET. Don't ruin the flow of a good compilation. Anyone who gets copies will always be required to skip those two songs.

just my opinion. otherwise, Fantastic job and i'd like to volunteer to be the West Coast Tree Supervisor when it comes time.

thank you blt for your thoughts..

actually, i almost agree with you.. i was listening to the cd's the other day, and those 2 tracks do stick out like a sore thumb..

HOWEVER, an argument could be made that

  1. it is a valid 'new order' single, official, and also very hard to find.. so i don't know why people keep wanting to hear it (if it really is that bad)..

personally, they don't bother me that much (and yes, you can skip it)..

  1. note that i am not trying to play too much favorites with the tracklistings (except disc 4)...it is important historically to have these songs on here...and i do use it to contrast it with 'ecstasy'..so you can see the progression of their works..

honestly, they have made a lot of worse songs and instrumentals than that.. 'lionrock mixes', 'sly and robbie', 'plutome dub'...etc...

but at this point, i'm going to leave them in their..if you wish to delete them off your copies...please feel free to...(also, they will reduce the discs to fit on 74min, i think).....

'theme' would be great to have...but i don't have that yet..

i really don't want to make too many changes at this late stage though..

thanx again for your thoughts..

disc 01 the early singles

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:34 1 ceremony (original) from the original 7"

Ceremony Fac 33 [March 1981]

'ceremony' has appeared on many of the 'new order' compilation cd's....however, this is the original 7" version without gillian....there are basically 2 different 12" versions also...but due to some mispressings, some of them contain the same version, instead of this one...i like the 'raw' sound it has to it...an excellent start for the very first single they released...

source :

7": UK 1981 (Factory FAC 33) [gold sleeve] 4:34 a) Ceremony

sound note :

this track was recorded from vinyl, and remastered..there is still some harsh noise at the beginning of it, but its much clearer later on..

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:27 2 procession from the original 7"

Procession Fac 53 [September 1981]

procession is the second single released by 'new order'...interestingly it was released in many different colored sleeves which are great collectors items (if you have all of them).....

source :

7": UK 1981 (Factory FAC 53) 4:27 Procession

sound note :

i have actually used the cd version from 'substance', as they are the same..

time (m:s) track(mix) note

3:13 3 Dreams Never End album version (was released on us 10" promo)

Dreams Never End / Truth [October 1981]

this was never planned as a single, however...i have included it since it was released as a promo in the US....for their first album 'movement'.....it would have made a great single i thought....

source :

10": US 1981 (The Automatt) [one sided acetate] 3:31 Dreams Never End

sound note :

i have used the album version from the cd for 'movement'

time (m:s) track(mix) note

5:33 4 Everything's Gone Green from the original 12"

Everything's Gone Green FBNL 8 December 1981

this is one of may all-time favorite songs from them...it was also their (unofficial) 4th single.. it was not actually on an album, but an EP called 1981-1982....very energetic, and progressive for its time...(it was released as a shorter 7" edit on the b-side of 'procession')...

source :

12": BL 1981 (Factory Benelux FBNL 8) CD5: BL 1990 (Factory Benelux FBN 8 CD) 5:33 Everything's Gone Green

sound note :

i have used the version from the cd-single, (which is the same version as found on 'substance')...

time (m:s) track(mix) note

5:23 5 Temptation (7") from the uk 7"

Temptation Fac 63 [April 1982]

'temptation' is one of the all-time classic songs from new order...however, most people have only heard the 'substance' mix, or the full 12" version....here is the original uk 7" edit....(there is also a shorter version on the soundtrack of 'something wild')...this mix retains the elements from the full version, but has different dynamics to it...

source :

7": UK 1982 (Factory FAC 63)
        5:23 Temptation

sound note :

this version was remastered from vinyl, i've cleaned up most of the noise from it..

time (m:s) track(mix) note

3:26 6 Rocking Carol from the uk flexi

Christmas Flexi Fac 51b [Dec 1982]

this was a very unusual song by them.. its a rather primitive synthesizer/vocoder experiment....which is probably why it was never commercially released...it was given away for free at the hacienda on christmas eve in 1982...although there were only 4400 made in a limited edition, they do come up for auction, and other sites, if you are looking for it...its an excellent novelty to have for collectors, but the sound quality and substance of it are not very good...it is included for completeness...

source : 7": UK 1982 (Factory FAC 51b) [flexi] 3:26 Rocking Carol

sound note :

there is some rumble in this track, and i've tried to remove it...however, the sound quality of the flexi is not very good, so not much more can be done to it...

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:24 7 ecstasy (or only the lonely) album version (was released on us 10" promo)

Only the Lonely (ecstasy) [1983]

as a contrast to the primitive tracks from the flexi...here is a very powerful instrumental that is like a premonition for 'blue monday'.. this song was released as a promo in the US for the album 'power, corruption, and lies'... its one of my favorite instrumentals from them.. (and also from my favorite album)...

source : 10": US 1983 (Factory/Rough Trade) [acetate] Only the Lonely

sound note :

this version is taken from the cd for 'power, corruption, and lies'

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:34 8 Blue Monday (video version) from the uk video

Blue Monday Fac 73 [March 1983]

'blue monday' is one of the masterpiece songs of all-time...so many people have heard this, or were influenced by it...it still remains a powerful statement even today...once again, due to the early marketing and promotion of this single..we only hear the full 12" version, or some of the more recent '88, or '95 remixes, (and many of the cover versions also)....

however, many people do not even know that there was a promotional video or 'short' made for it....even lesser known are the two shorter edits from poland and japan, that are virtually impossible to find...they are basically the same though..with some differences in timing..

i have chosen the video edit to represent the song here...

this is a cd-recreation of the mix..i took the original video recording, and noted the times for the edit..and re-did them using the cd version of 'blue monday' from substance

3:54 9 Confusion (video version) from the uk video

Confusion Fac 93 [August 1983]

confusion was another breakthrough for new order and the american market...arthur baker helped them out with this single...he's in the video version of this....its a great early-electro classic....i have used the shorter video edit of it, as the 12" version appears on other compilations (see 'arthur baker')...this version is similar to some of the other hard to find 7" edits that exist on the uk/ger 7" promos...

3:54 10 Thieves Like Us (edit) from the uk 7" promo

Thieves Like Us Fac 103 [April 1984]

here is another great song that was released as a single only....however, it had a shorter edit that was on a promo only release in the uk..

this is the version that i've included here.. a great song, with great lyrics...however, there will always be a debate about the line..'love is the air that supports the eagle'..or 'love is the id that supports the ego'...

if you can find this promo, hang onto it, as it rather rare (it also has an edit of 'lonesome tonight' on the b-side)...

source : 7": UK 1984 (Factory FAC 103) [promo] 3:54 Thieves Like Us (edit)

sound note :

this is a cd recreation of the track, using the full version from 'substance'

3:55 11 Murder from the 12"

Murder FBN 22 [May 1984]

'murder' was an interesting companion release to 'thieves like us'...its cover is dark and foreboding...just like the music..

i've never heard another new order song, that sounds like this...its short but very intense..

this release only came out on 12", until the release of 'substance'...

4:23 12 The Perfect Kiss (edit) from the 7"

The Perfect Kiss Fac 123 [May 1985]

'the perfect kiss' is one of the most perfect songs ever..intense, complex rhythms..and a dark moody tone complete the song...it also has an excellent 'live' video to it..

there are many, many incarnations of this song...for the first one on this compilation, i am using the us 7" edit (which may differ from the uk edit)....

its hard to edit down a perfect song, but there are times, when you can't listen to the full 12" mix....this version drops one of the verses...but the rest remain intact..

source : 7": US 1985 (Qwest 9 28968-7) [promo] 4:23 The Perfect Kiss (edit)

sound note :

this version was remastered from the 7" vinyl

3:29 13 Sub-culture (edit) from the 7"

Sub-culture Fac 133 [November 1985]

source : 7": UK 1985 (Factory FAC 133) 3:24 Sub-culture (edit)

this is quite a different sound for new order.. it verges on 'disco'...in fact some of the group members try to distance themselves from this release...also, the cover of the 12" did not have any artwork, because peter saville did not care for it either..

i really like the complete transformation the song has been made into though...its a very cool song, with neat stutter effects in it..

there are some remix/edits of it (such as the one on 'substance'...but this version is unique to this release..

sound note :

this version is remastered from the 7" vinyl

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:19 14 Shellshock (edit) from the 7"

Shellshock Fac 143 [March 1986]

'shellshock' was originally written for the movie 'pretty in pink', and in fact appears on that soundtrack (as an exclusive version)....it also has appeared as a different 12" with other mixes....

whats lesser known is that it was one of the few singles that came out as a 7"....(it had a 7" edit of 'thieves like us (inst)' on the b-side..

another dark and moody song from new order.....

source : 7": UK 1986 (Factory FAC 143) 4:19 Shellshock (edit)

sound note :

this track was remastered from the 7" vinyl

time (m:s) track(mix) note

3:25 15 State of the Nation (edit) from the 7"

State of the Nation FAC 153 [Sep 1986]

new order was in a state of transition while a lot of these songs came out...this one was another single release that did not come out on album....

a much more political statement from them, but still it represented a change in their style.....once again, the rarer 7" edit of the song is used here..

source : 7": UK 1986 (Factory FAC 153) 3:25 State of the Nation (edit)

3:40 16 Bizarre Love Triangle (edit) from the 7"

Bizarre Love Triangle FAC 163 [Nov 1986]

source : 7": CA 1986 (PolyGram FAC 26) [gatefold sleeve] 3:40 Bizarre Love Triangle (edit)

if you have ever been to a club or dance in the mid 80's and beyond, you have heard this song...its now officially a staple of dance clubs..

unbeliavably happy in tone, and dancey in its beat..it has become one of the songs that defines 'new order', to the more casual observers (along with 'true faith')..

there are quite a few edits of this song, as it was so popular....the single remix seems to be used a lot (especially on the radio)....however, this version is the vinyl only edit...

sound note :

this track was remasterd from the 7" vinyl

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:03 17 Way Of Life from the us 12" promo

Way of Life [1986]

'way of life' was released as a promo for the 'brotherhood' album...actually the vinyl version is not 3:45 as stated in the discography...but is the same as the cd version...

this is an excellent song, with great guitar work..it really should have been released...

source : 12": US 1986 (Qwest PRO-A-2644) [promo] 4:03 Way of Life

sound note :

this track was taken from the us cd for 'brotherhood'

time (m:s) track(mix) note

3:51 18 weirdo album version (was released on bz 12" promo)

Weirdo [1987]

another great song from 'brotherhood', this song was released on a promotional item in brazil..

source : 12": BZ 1987 (WEA 1.139) [promo] 3:51 Weirdo

sound note :

this track was taken from the us cd for 'brotherhood'

time (m:s) track(mix) note

4:10 19 True Faith (album edit) from us promo cd

True Faith Fac 183 [July 1987]

besides 'blue monday', and 'world in motion', this song has helped define 'new order' to many people..

it has been played so often on radio and included on countless soundtracks, and compilations..

yet it still retains that timeless qualities that all great songs have...

included here is a rare edit from the us promo cd...this promo still goes for a lot of money, as it has another remix on it, along with the full morning sun remix (which is now quite easy to find on the 'rest of' compilation)...

[update]

hey no'ers..

ok, we're at the final stages of finishing of the discs now..

i've got a few more sound issues to deal with, but that won't take long..

i'm going to record the 'world in motion' (video mix) tonight off laserdisc at my friends place..so that should take care of that..

also one other FINAL change.

[boxset] -> _international_2__v0.4f_(final)_

i've added these tracks:

  • 'such a good thing'
  • removed 'true faith 02' ((philip steir re-order edit))

'true faith' is represented 3 other times, so we're not really missing out...also, the sound quality of that track that i had wasn't so great..

instead, we're getting the extra track, thats only on the uk cd-single for the 'world in motion 02' release..and it is in cd-quality also..

As NO once said in a B-side of an old single with coloured pills:

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!

"Such a good thing" is also in the 5th CD from Retro, which every serious NO fan has. And it is also a crap, one of the worst NO tunes, accordingly to the polls here in NOOL.

In my sole opinion, it is best to have a good mix - even if its quality isn't that good - than having a crap (and largely available) song on it.

But it's just an opinion.

hi spider....

as i mentioned once before...

its getting hard, here at the end of the compilation...to decide to what to change, and what to leave in, or add..

i DONT have retro...yes, thats right..i dont own it.. yes, i might pick up the bonus disc just for 'elegia', but thats about it...(ok, maybe if i get it really really cheap off of ebay).. but i dont own it.. there might be other people that have 'retro'.. but what if they don't have the bonus disc either?

as far as 'bad' songs go.. or for that matter, any other songs..

i could put 'vietnam'... or like you said..some other rare mix...

but at this point... i don't want to keep changing things..

i really do feel 'true faith' is represented enough on there.. and i didn't really care much for more mixes of it..

honestly, there are enough other 'good' tracks on here so you really shouldn't worry too much about this one..

  • remember, i'm trying to include the 'historically' significant songs, and the b-sides, that aren't normally included...and i think that 'such a good thing' is definitely a b-side that should be represented...
