New Order - live or record

I prefer the live gigs and collect all the boots, some classics out there ( thanks to Pete for the mixers , and Dave for sharing his collection ). Frankly on record I thought they sucked, however I have 350 live gigs.

The atmosphere, bum notes, Barney's banter, and changed lyrics, make em all unique, including the Donna Summer rip off Blue Monday.

I'd say they must be heard on album to be heard properly. The live versions by and large sound like pisstakes compared. Joy Division is harder to say, because a good many of their live shows certainly rocked, if my ears don't fool me; but even then, Hannett's production isn't to be missed.

I consider the live videos official.

I don't care if they ever release an "official" live album. There's plenty of decent recordings available unofficially. What I'd like to see more of are official live DVD releases. We have Taras from '81 and Pumped from '85 but need some gigs from inbetween those years released.

Yeah live they were great , especially circa 84 - 86.

They are almost two different entities, New Order live and New Order on record. Those who haven't seen them live have really missed out, as it is a real event, always was. I've seen thousands of gigs over the years, and none of them ever match the feeling of seeing New Order, warts and all, bum notes, bad moods, crowd trouble, it's just a fantastic buzz.

The records have their own qualities, they don't compare to actually seeing them play the same songs though, they seem to take on a new vibrancy live. Maybe it is the blue light ?

might see if I can still squeeze into my Bundesweir vest today.

I completely agree. Each sound is great for its own reasons. In the studio, NO create unique, complex and heart-felt music. Its always great to see how these classic tunes will translate live. I'll take 'em both...because I don't think you can have one w/o the other and truly appreciate the band.

2004 is going to be an expensive year for forthcoming albums (especially Revenge, A Guy Called Gerald, Orbital, The Orb, and hopefully - some new New Order).

They were the best live band ever. It's gone a bit pear shaped recently, with predictable sets and auto cues.

This thread deserves to go back up for a while longer.

Studio = great, Live = greater

Definitely can't have one without the other, but for every studio CD I listen to nowadays, I play maybe 10 live/bootleg CD's. Of all the gigs I saw in my gigging years in the 80's, the New Order gigs are the ones I still remember and which make me wish I could turn the clock back, 83-85 were really the golden years. Crikey, how nostalgic and middle-aged that sounds. :)

This is a tuffy. I like their records. As they say in the studio they decide what the record sounds like. I like listening to boots and live stuff when I can get it. It doesn't however compare to being there. I've only managed to see them 3 time. (mind you they didn't tour here for 15 years)and in that time they have changed greatly. So I like listening to both, one to hear what they think/thought a song should sound like, and then to hear how it turns out live. As we all know some live versions were truely bizarre. :)

it's a no brainer - seeing them live just blows the records away

been listening to a lot of boots recently & hearing the new ones I've had (cheers peter, al) for the first time is so much better than hearing a new album by them.
