Hi: I'm wondering if anyone saw the New Order Video on VH1 Classics. The song was "Confusion" and it was a different, slightly slower version (less discofied) than the version on the Substance album.
Is it available on other New Order CD's or DVD's? I like this version of the song and wonder if New Order ever released it to the public. Thanks.
hi, jayna. this is the forum for all the New Order discussion. the other was Community, about the tribute album we´re doing. it´s hard to understand all at first but you´ll get used to it!

the video version is the original 7" version of the song, the substance re-recorded for substance. the 12" original version is on retro its a lot loke the video version but a bit longer
Why did New Order bother remixing Temptation and Confusion for Substance when the originals are far superior.

Depends what you think is superior. Quite frankly, I prefer the Substance versions of both songs. Now, Subculture on the other hand...

Confusion Well, New Order didn't own the original Confusion recording, Streetwise (and whoever succeeded them) did, right?
Temptation As for Temptation...maybe the masters were in a bad state, or the band felt the need to bring it up to date a bit. I recall if you listen *very* carefully on Substance, you can hear pops on at least a couple of tracks, like they were mastered from vinyl. Hurt might be one of them.
I do not agree that the originals are _superior_. I love them all!

Sorry to be picky, but the Substance versions aren't remixes, they are totally re-recorded versions from 87. I think the consensus last time this was discussed was that they re-recorded those two to make them sound more like the live versions of that time - listen to boots of 87-era NO gigs, both Temptation and Confusion don't sound much like the original 12" versions and much more like Substance versions structurally.

They were probably re-recorded also to make more consise, shorter versions, as all the original 12 Inches would've been too long to fit on one CD - although some tracks such as 'Shellshock', 'Sub-Culture', 'Perfect Kiss' and 'Hurt' were clipped a bit for Substance anyway. 'Confusion' is also in a different key (A flat minor, instead of D minor, if memory serves) probably to get a better vocal more suited to Barney's range. I read somewhere at the time that these re-recorded songs also featured in the 'Salvation' soundtrack, but as I ain't seen the film I don't know if this is true.
I like the Substance 'Temptation' best, but probably the original 12" of 'Confusion' a little better than the re-recording - which sounds much more dated now, possibly due to the 'digital' sound of the samples and synthesizer sounds, rather than the analogue sounds in the original.
Wouldn't have thought they've mastered them from vinyl somehow - Substance only came out six years after 'Ceremony', so it would take some serious disorganization to lose or damage the master tapes. Then again, this was Factory Records...

... besides which there were obviously decent sources for the originals of Temptation/Hurt as the 1981-1982 CD doesn't sound like it was mastered from vinyl.
