Anyone notice what looks like a Confederate flag on Barney's Gibson SG at Finsbury Park? :eek3:

No, he just appreciates Southern culture.........:D

Manchester and the American south have a lot in common: both were hotbeds for secession in the 1850s, and both have resorted to hitting the bottle since the Civil War. Obviously Barney meant to say "You all forgot about Jefferson Davis!" but not vocally

Tabsy, you gotta warn me before I'm drinking something while reading a post like that :spit:

On one of NO's 1984 gigs Barney plays Dixie inbetween songs. Gotta go listen to them now to determine which one it was.

I saw the Stars and Bars on his guitar. Rather seen a swastica. WTF was up with that? trying to get an interview?

13,000 people from my State died to keep the US in one piece. Some were my relatives.

I thought you were crazy but it actually looks a bit like the Confederate flag.

It looks like one of those cards that used to be given away with PG Tips Tea, perhaps he has a Brazilian one also?

Twister...if you are referring to the flag in the picture, that is not the Stars and Bars...it's a pic of the Confederate Navy Jack (often mistakenly referred to as the Confederate Battle Flag)...

The Stars and Bars has 7 stars in a blue canton...with a red bar, a white bar and another red bar in the field...and looked very similar to the U.S. Flag...

New Order's a bunch of redneck racist bastards. I wish I'd been the first one to the "You all forgot Jefferson Davis" joke (thanks a lot, Trevor). :nonono:

Blast 'em and their careless use of contentious iconography!

Did anyone catch which particular naff macho slogan Hooky has on his teeshirt on that gig? I couldn't make it out on the DVD.

Was it the 'kill em all let god sort em out' one? (I used to think that phrase orgininated with gung ho US marine types in the vietnam era or even WW2, but apparently it was first used by the Catholic Church when dealing with heretics like the Cathars in the 12th century - 'God will know his own' is how they put it).

The actual battle flag, in fact, is square-ish :square: , and evolved over the course of the war. The "battle flag" is the one that currently flies (or did, unless it's been taken down yet) from the SC state house and was put up there in the early Sixties to "honor Confederate dead" (you may have noticed that the civil-rights movement was going on at the same time).

Whatever, I think it's a poor choice on Barn's part, but JD/NO have a history of taking on dubious iconography so I'm not much surprised. Being a Southerner, and one who would like to see the day come when "we can all get along" more or less, I'm not a fan of the flag itself because it's divisive. But I doubt Barney's longing for the days when Robert E. Lee used to ride through cotton fields teeming with slaves, and Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson drank mint julips on the porch while Jeb Stuart did his strip-tease.......

It could have been worse, Mr Sumner could have adopted a gold lame shirt (sorry haven't worked out how to add accents yet - doh!) and waved a Union Jack, like some other Mancunian I could mention...

What if it was the Reich War Flag?? How many people in the UK know what the Stars and Bars are? But then again he could be a racist. Remember he taught white boys how to dance and stold Negro music with Blue Monday.

Well...when someone in Iowa doesn't know what the Stars & Bars are, why would I expect any of our friends across the pond to know???

And you're right, he could be a racist...he could also be a gypsy...or a twat...

I was just simply pointing out a slight inaccuracy in your post...so :p

Why the fark would I care to honor the flag by using its proper title? That is what we call them here. The only time we see them is on back of rusty trucks and in front of double wides. The Iowa Statehouse has a collection of Confederate war flags captured in battle. Currently they are being retored.

The US and the world would be a vastly different place if the South had won. And Barney would be singing in Deutsch.

I must point out that across the pond, many people only know the confederate flag/stars and bars from "The Dukes of Hazzard".

But then I expect they were in the Klan when they weren't upsetting old Boss Hog.

the south shall burn again.....

the southern united states should be sold to mexico, especially lower texas, new mexico, arizona and southern california. louisiana, arkansas, mississippi, and florida need to be set on fire. if i never had to go south of san francisco i'd be a very, very happy man...if the south didn't exist (at least not in it's currently repressed state) we'd all be better off.

OK I saw the CSA national flag today in a photoshop[ competition. Sort of a USA type with thick red and white stripes and a circle of stars in the blue area. Is that what you are referring to as the Stars and Bars? Hell, they could fly that off any Statehouse and nobody, except Southern white males and the Nation of Islam would know what it was.

hmm...that's a highly intellectual statement, did you come up with that one on your own???

actually, anyone who has done much more than required reading on the civil war would probably know the difference between the two flags...I've got a friend, who is female, and not southern at all (she's lived in Ohio her entire frigging life), who could tell you straight up that the flag on Barney's electric twanger was not the stars and bars...or is she just some ignorant redneck as well???

BFD someone can distinguish one 100+ year old defunct flag from another. Not a Civil War buff. Pardon my ignorance, you smartee you.

maybe you should go back to talking about something you know about...like your frigging Jag...you condescending little shit...
