...hmm, the perfect kiss (instrumental), could b the flip-side of the u.s. promo 7' (Qwest 9 28968-7) a: the perfect kiss (edit) 4:23, b: the perfect kiss (instrumental) 5:09...

...update 4 negative 1, the positive nerd: what is 2 do 4 getting such a copy, only 2 ask for it ? tell me, negative 1, tell me...

TPK Dub mix could be the one from the Benelux 7" which ahd different edits to the standard UK one (and was called "Dub" if memory serves).

Collectors' FYI: While going through my archived info for the coming update of the New Order Discography, I found the following message from Jon Masciana (Warner/Reprise guy) on 19 Dec 2002:

"I can confirm that. The Area One Reprise CDr is sourced from a bootleg copy of the show. The bootleg was duplicated so that a few people could hear it. It was given a usual promo cd-r sleeve. Also, the 6-disc set of remixes that somehow leaked out were also bootlegs (these were all taken from vinyl 12" mixes and given to a few A&R people at Warner.)One of these discs is this one:http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/albums/various7.htmlThere are 5 more of various vinyl-only remixes. However, all Qwest/WB 12" mixes and b-sides were dug from the vault and put on CD-r on a 6-disc set for a possible "best Of" re-release. Those discs are not bootlegs. A new best of never materialized though - 20 Years of New Order was created instead."

From this I deduct that the discussed 6xCDR collection from 2001 (which has now been removed from Esprit's listings) is the real deal, taken from the masters at Qwest/WB. The track listing seems to suggest that.

The other 6 CDRs (all made in 2001), quoted as bootlegs, or non-official Reprise CDRs, would be:

  • Blue Monday 95 + True Faith 94
  • 1995 Remixes (incl some Rest of Mixes and WiM 96)
  • 1995 Remixes (incl some TF and 1963 mixes)
  • The Rest Of New Order + Remixes
  • Various 7" Versions
  • Various 80's Remixes/Tracks

Full tracklistings and scans will be in the updated Discography. I'll probably lump the last 6 CDRs under the same entry (e.g., 2001 Reprise In-House CDR-pack) and make a note of the non-officialness...

Actually, I have the UK and Benelux seven inches of The Perfect Kiss, and 'The Kiss Of Death' and 'Perfect Dub' are both exactly the same.

Are you sure? I seem to remember that I did a comparison listen a loooong time ago, and the Dub and Death weren't the same. Of course my memory may fail me...

Have you compared it to the US 7"? According to my info, the BL and US issues are the same.

Just checked my seven inches, and the 7FBN123 and FAC123 seven inhes both have the same 5:10 versions of The Kiss Of Death, only the FBN version is called The Perfect Dub. On the A-Sides, FAC123 has the Low-Life version, and 7FBN123 has the ever-so-slightly Edited seven inch mix.

I have them both too and I think that although they are the same length, Kiss of Death and The Perfect Dub are not the same edit.

I'll have to go away and listen to them though...

Hmm, I can't say anything about Dub/Death. But I've just checked the A-side on a CD I made a long, long, long time ago, and the time for that version is the 3:51 version. Now, I can't remember if I took it from the regular 7" or the 7" promo. I'm starting to suspect that I got it from the promo.

So it seems to me that the regular UK 7" and the UK 7" promo do not have the same tracks, but the promo has shorter edits - as seen in the Discography.

What I would like to know now is:

  • Is the Instrumental/Dub the same as (regular 7") Kiss Of Death?
  • Is the CA version (FAC23) the same as the regular UK version or the UK promo version?

Regular 7 Inch meaning the UK issue, then yes it is exactly the same. I've never heard the 3 minute edits of The Perfect Kiss or the Kiss Of Death, but I don't have them on my many formats!

How could they make The Perfect Kiss so short anyway?! There are no officially released seven inch versions that I know of that are less than 4 minutes in length, although I'd be interested to hear the promo edits. I have the Low-life album edit of the track on the UK seven inch, and a very slightly shorter version on the FBN 7 inch.

Ok, I'll do the appropriate edits to the Discography.

Regarding the 3:51 TPK, it must be from the promo. It has a cold start and a cold ending so it's not one of those fade-out edits.

i should have more information about these releases soon...

but looking at the times, the fbn edits, appear to be the same as the US 7" versions...(i have the us 7" promo, and am expecting both the normal release, and the fbn 7" also)...

i will also look into the promo edit versions..

Weren't the promos of The Perfect Kiss just on acetates or something? Never seen these on Ebay or in record stores... Would be interested to hear the sub-four-minute versions if anyone has them as decent mp3 files...

By the way, don't forget to check out my New Order list for detailed chronoligal track information and my own, double-checked timings.

To recap, the versions (and timings) of Perfect Kiss I have:

  • Fac 123 (UK 12 Inch) - A: The Perfect Kiss 8:46. B: The Kiss Of Death 7:01 / Perfect Pit 1:23

  • Fac 123 (UK 7 Inch) - A: Perfect Kiss 4:48 [Low-life version]. B: Kiss Of Death 5:10

  • 7FBN123 (Benelux 7 Inch) - A: The Perfect Kiss 4:24 [slightly edited Low-file version]. B: The Perfect Dub 5:10 [same as Kiss Of Death 7 Inch version]

  • PRO-A-2342 (Qwest promo 12 Inch) - A: The Perfect Kiss (Single Edit) 4:24 [same as Benelux 7 Inch version]. B: The Perfect Kiss (Live Version From The Perfect Kiss Video) 5:13 [edited video version]

  • Fac 200 (Substance CD album) - 7: Perfect Kiss 8:02 [edited 12 Inch version].

  • WIN CD 011 (BBC Radio One Live In Concert) - 7: Perfect Kiss (Live 19th June 1987) 9:50.

  • KTS 216 (Electronic Ecstasy) - 9: Perfect Kiss (Live 29th August 1993) 7:46.

  • (In Hindsight II) - 10: Perfect Kiss (Razormaid Mix) 7:19.

  • 0927 49499 2 (Retro Disc 5) - 8: The Perfect Kiss (Live Take Recorded At Video Shoot) 9:55

As far as I know, the only mixes I don't have are on the 10 Fac 123 acetate (The Perfect Kiss (Edit) 3:51 / The Kiss Of Death (Edit) 3:01). The New Order discography also mentions a 4:10 'Album Edit' of The Perfect Kiss from a Canadian DJ promo DJ 81/ DJF 159, but I'm assuming this is an incorrectly timed 4:48 or 4:24 edit.

These things don't half get complicated, do they?!

No, the 7" UK promo (FAC123-7) was issued in a regular black sleeve, the labels are black with "123" in big, white letters. This is the A side of that single:

I think I've seen that promo for sale on eBay.

I'm pretty sure that the 2x10" acetates, as mentioned in the Discography, are for the regular 7" release (FAC123).

To recap, the versions (and timings) of Perfect Kiss I have:[snip, snip]

I appreciate your anal attention to details, and corrections will be made to the Discography in the next revision (now approaching 150 new scans, several new items, more FAQish tibits, and a couple of fixes and clarifications).

As I said, I believe the UK acetates are the same as the UK regular 7". I haven't checked the Canadian promo, so I don't have an answer. I've learned never to assume anything though... :) But you are missing the UK 7" promo edits (FAC123-7).

You are also missing the Lyntone 7LYN15645-1 metal testpress, which has an unreleased remix (in the Discgraphy called alternate remix, probably an edit of some sort). This information has been confirmed to me by the collector who owns it (one of the "old-timers"). Apparently this acetate/testpress is a one-of-a-kind pressing.

These things don't half get complicated, do they?!

Tell me about it.

God, how confusing: there's a Fac 123 seven inch and a Fac 123-7 seven inch! I'll have to track that little blighter down!

I saw your list of "New Order tracks not available on CD". I'm not sure you count releases that are CD-promo only, but here are some comments:

  • 17 Confusion (Edit) 7" 3:38 From 'Confusion' German 7" Rough Trade LC 5661

Don't bother. That "edit" is just a fade of some common mix/edit (can't remember exactly which one). I did a check way back when I put my vinyl-only tracks onto DAT.

  • 21 The Kiss Of Death 7" 5:10 From 'The Perfect Kiss' 7"
  • 22 The Perfect Kiss 12" 8:46 From 'The Perfect Kiss' 12"
  • 23 Perfect Pit 12" 1:23 From 'The Perfect Kiss' 12"
  • 24 The Perfect Kiss (Live Version From The Perfect Kiss Video) 12" 5:13 From 'The Perfect Kiss' QWEST promo 12"

Well, if one is to believe that the 6xCDR Reprise promo, "Various Maxis and Singles" (put together for a possible another "best of" compilation), has tracks from the masters, which I'd think are digitized these days, then these tracks do exists on CD(R). I tend to believe that they are from the masters and not recorded off the vinyl. (The assumption here is that they call Perfect Pit for Perfect Kiss Dub Mix - there's already an instrumental.)

  • 30 Sub-culture 12" 7:26 From 'Sub-culture' 12"
  • 31 Dub-vulture 12" 7:56 From 'Sub-culture' 12"
  • 41 Bizarre Love Triangle (Extended Edit) 7" 4:58 From American 7" Qwest PRO-A-2636
  • 44 True Dub 12" 10:43 From 'True Faith' remix 12"

See TPK comment.

  • 45 Fine Time 12" 4:43 From 'Fine Time' 12"

Isn't this on the CA CD5?

  • 69 Someone Like You (Gabriel + Dresden Vocal Mix) 12" 11:13 From 'Someone Like You' double 12" set
  • 70 Someone Like You (Futureshock Strip Down Mix) 12" 7:49 From 'Someone Like You' double 12" set
  • 71 Someone Like You (Gabriel + Dresden Voco-tech Dub) 12" 11:10 From 'Someone Like You' double 12" set
  • 72 Someone Like You (James Holden Heavy Dub) 12" 10:00 From 'Someone Like You' remix 12"

There is a US CDR promo with 69, 70, 71, and there is a Greek CDR promo with all the tracks. In addition, 69 and 71 have been serviced by the DJ service company Promo Only.

  • 77 Confusion (Koma And Bones Version) 12" 8:11 From 'Confusion Remixes 02' 12" WACKT002

There is a 1-track CDR promo. Not sure if it's the full version or the shorter one...

Also, there is that 6xCDR pack from Reprise with tracks and remixes recorded from vinyl (including various 7"-only versions, X-mas flexi, Eschreamer mixes, and Rest Of remixes). But I'm not sure that they count as being "CD" versions...

Well, yeah, they theoretically exist digitally, but I don't have £400 to blow on one of these rare promos! I don't personally count CD-Rs as being officially on CD, due to the fragility of the format.

  • 45 Fine Time 12" 4:43 From 'Fine Time' 12"

Isn't this on the CA CD5?

No, I bought the Canadian CD single of Fine Time, and it's actually the seven inch mix on this format, although it's thhe only place you can get 'Fine Line' on CD. The 12" of Fine Time remains unreleased on CD, as it is slightly different to the Technique version.

There is a US CDR promo with 69, 70, 71, and there is a Greek CDR promo with all the tracks. In addition, 69 and 71 have been serviced by the DJ service company Promo Only.

Again, CD-R promos are hard to find, expensive and have to be treated with care, so I only list "officially" released tracks in my vinyl only list.

Surely one day a box set will tie up some of these old vinyl-only tracks?

who bought that reprise thing for £550 anyway? any chance of confirming if they are mastered from vinyl or not?
