This may have been raised before, but I couldn't find any specific reference (I'm not Ricardo !) so I'm asking anyway:

At Royal Festival Hall the TPK was played for the first time i.e. the Cock version. They didn't play it at the next gig at Paradiso 3 days later, but they opened with it in Leicester a week later. What was that version like? Had it progressed to the 'proper' version? Was it an instant change or was it a slow progression? Plenty dates after the RFH but the next one I've got is in December 1985 by which time it definitely was the version we all know and love.

It was a gradual progression. Leicester, Birmingham and Bristol were all similar to RFH (though with more accurate lyrics by and large), and by the time it reached Spain it was nearly done. The UK August 84 Tour was nearly the finished article, only some synth sequences and a bit of drum machine that changed.

Apparently, they (Steve?) can't be arsed to program it into their current equipment...

On a related note, I have been wondering lately whether RFH was the very first occasion that Bernard made a public statement about that particular feature of his anatomy?

Maybe the infamous Warsaw-era yell from Barney ("You all forgot Rudolph Hess!") in a perverse way could be a nickname for his..gear :eek3:

thanks Tim, now you've got me wanting to collect all 16 gigs in 84 following the debut. It would be much easier though if someone was to make a compilation with just those tracks on it ...

Mike, thanks for your list. I see you've got all 16 .... :angel2:

You don't seriously want every live version of Perfect Kiss in 1984 do you ?

I've got nothing better to do at the moment :D twas just a thought, you know, to follow the changes ...

There's only really three perceivable changes. I can do them all easily enough for you onto two CDs, but not for at least a week !

I'll have to dig them all out myself and listen again !

Man, I'd like to have a listen to those. Anyone have the lyrics to "cock?"

Which brings up a question. Do they use gigs as tests because they do not practice enough or do they experiment with new songs during gigs as a treat for the crowd? Or is it because they are all together and wtf lets work on the new one? Whatever the reason it is wonderful to hear songs in their early form.

its not your fault, its not your fault

Really the Leicester '84 and Salford '85 shows are the only rdically different versions.

Agreed. The Salford version was a take on Kiss of Death, the only time they played TPK that way live. Some people thought it was some sort of equipment malfunction that led them to play it like that, but if you listen it sounds pretty well rehearsed to me. Salford was the only rdically different take in '85. In '84 you can hear the dramatic evolution from M1 (work in progress) to Leicester (around 80% there) in the space of a week, then a gradual change through to Heaven (around 95%). :moose:

But the rest of it is hard to understand..

This is the story of me and you, no one else... This is the Eastside and this is the Westside I saw you infront of my house... you had a knife, its not your own fault

Like most of the working songs in progress, too many lyrics foir him to sing so he weeds them out. Too bad because many gems are lost.

she says it goes up down up down in out in out...

this is the east side, this is the west side I saw you in front of my house You had a shotgun, you had a knife you blew me...

How could you cut in front of me You said 'I saw you right there in the show" I won't get up...wants gas?...

Artificiality X 6

Look to the right I saw my ride You saw me with her long legs You said 'I am at last on my own"

its not your own fault....
