Their genius lies in the fact that they were not signed to a major, that a certain Mr. Gretton allowed a certain Mr. Wilson to record and distribute a 50/50 Joy Division Album and that they really couldn't give a toss. . .

That was hardly their genius though was it? They got lucky with Wilson having an inheritance and no-one having any idea about business, but their (i.e the band's) genius is in the music they made, not in their business acumen.

A lot of bands of their generation who signed to fledgling independent labels had similar good fortune. Depeche Mode had the same 50/50 deal, also without a contract.

Sure, it allowed them to develop properly and not have to compromise so that they are now in the happy position of not giving a fuck and not having to produce a hits-packed album every 12 months, but if they weren't producing music of the very highest calibre in the first place, that would all be irrelevent surely? Joy Division were picked out by Gretton and Wilson because they were already showing signs of their genius. (I will admit that Hannett's production was also integral at the early stages).

I'm sure plenty of other bands at the time had similar luck/deals but we aren't sitting here discussing them because ultimately their music wasn't as good as Joy Division/New Order's.
