smaller venues, more diverse sets?

You think if New Order started playing smaller venues--theatres and whatnot, instead of stadiums and arenas--there would be a more fan-based atmosphere and we'd hear more diversity in the sets? When not playing to huge crowds, there'd be less inclination to play all the big hits (BM, BLT, et al.) and maybe they'd dig into the extensive back catalogue some more. Agreed or disagreed?

They will never dig into the back catalogue. Too lazy these days.

it would be great if they decided to play smaller venues. i agree with Shug on the SubCulture revival front. There are so many good choices to bring into the set. SubCulture, Age of Consent, Primitive Notion, Procession and Here To Stay are the 5 i'd most like to see added. Of course anything from Technique or Low Life would be welcome.

i'll second that...Hurt is fantastic. the Paris 82 show has both Temptation and Hurt in the set. What a remarkable accomplishment to have released Temptaion/Hurt back in 82. Stunning. Perhaps the best A Side/ B Side combo of all time.

Better than Ceremony/IALP ? Or Procession/EGG ? I've always thought of Hurt as quite weak, but then again I never liked Temptation either until 1987.

It would be fantastic if they would turn back the clock in the old setlist, but it can't happen now. They don't have the old songs sequenced, and probably can't even remember how they went.

It's so sad....New Order lost much of their indie credibility after the collapse of Factory (though some could argue the turning point was the "True Faith"-era). Sadly, the inevitable move to go commercial ended when the band decided to fuck off for 5 years...now it's only pockets of hardcore fans that care much, and the "indie" kids today only love JD and laugh when you mention True Faith or Regret... "IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME BAND, NUMB NUTS!!"

Will North America (in any sized venue) get to see this great band anymore (or myself for the first time)? Only time (and ticket sales) will tell..

Morrissey sells out smaller sized venues like the Aragon and the metro so if he can do it New Order could easily as well do it too. But then again Dave Gahan show was not a sell-out, so as long as New Order tours as New Order, they'd be fine. I bet they would do an arena show. Wont sell 25000 tickets but it wont be empty. Monnaco sold out Metro in 98. and that was a midinght show. I just think New order should have toured the US in 2001. Get Ready was getting good reviews, crysyal was a good single, and a tour would have been very sucessful.

YES. I love Ceremony but prefer Hurt to IALP. Also prefer Temptation/Hurt to Procession/EGG even though i love both those tracks. Hurt used to annoy me back in the day but not i love it. The Bis version really changed my opinion of that track. It's rare a cover will shine new light on an old song but in this case, that's what happened. The singing is atrocious but the musicality makes up for the wobbly voice.

I'm not sure about the non-possibility of re-doing older stuff. They rediscovered Joy Divison from 1998, so by now we should be up to about 1981-1984, don't you think?

It would be great to hear stuff off Movement live, but seeing as Barney can't stand it I don't suppose that's likely. Then again, perhaps their "involvement" in Retro may have sparked a few memories, who knows?

What price "Lonesome Tonight"/"Mesh"/"Age of Consent" anyone...

I concur with the above comments that New Order missed a great opportunity by not hitting more towns, cities on their short, brief tour in support of Get Ready back in 2001. If you're out of the major markets - New York, Chicago, and LA, you're shit out of luck. I have my doubts about them ever getting ready to come over here again in support of anything, except maybe a shopping spree, a DJ gig, and/or art opening. Impulsive activity seems to go against their nature. Since the days of 24 hour party people are long gone, I’d be content with another good album's worth of listening myself.

No, but they did Toronto in 1981, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989. That's more times than they have played anywhere else in Canada !

I don't think it will happen in the near future because they are victims of their own comeback success. When the records started coming out again I really expected only the old faithful hardcore New Order fans to be interested so thought Crystal would chart at about #35 but for a bunch of blokes in their mid 40s who haven't done anything for 8 years to comeback at #8 is nothing short of astonishing. Together with the album and other singles all charting relatively high, it must mean a new younger fanbase as well as the faithful. Hence the demand that keeps them in stadia. Compare it with what's happened to other 80s acts still going like The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and Morrissey who have all brought out more records in the last decade than New Order but can't get a decent hit for love nor money and are consequently playing the smaller venues accepting that they haven't found a new audience and are preached to the dwindling already converted. I'm afraid we can't have it both ways.

I suppose we could all not buy the next records and force them into thinking there's less demand and they're fanbase has shrunk but I think that theory might backfire as Bernard probably just wouldn't bother getting out of bed.

I wouldnt be surprised if they did dig into the old stuff. I mean, they did Love Vigilantes and TBTHOG at Move 2002? If carry on playing outdoors i dont think i would want to hear stuff like TPK though. Indoors though...

I hope they stop playing Atmosphere though...

Love Vigilantes and Touched had both been in the rotation though during 2001 and early 2002 - Touched appeared far too often, and Love Vig was the alternative to Ceremony as song 4 on quite a few gigs abroad.

Well, I've never seen 'em play, so I would be disappointed NOT to hear the songs everybody else is tired of.

However, I probably wouldn't go see them play IF their attitude is one of just going through the motions, hating being there, etc. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a heretic.

i think tim is correct,the stuff that most people want to hear wont be heard.

each and everyone of us has our favourite moments and memories regarding new order..perhaps they should remain just that.

I tend to agree , lets keep our memories, like Tower Ballromm 83 etc etc

That was the main reason I didn't see them between 1989 and 2001 - I wasn't sure I could reconcile the New Order I grew up loving with the older, bloated and cynical New Order that 2001 appeared to bring. How wrong I was, the gigs now are as good as before, still full of mistakes, even if the sets are predictable. You can't beat the live experience.

Quite a few of us were pissed of with afer 89.

The small gigs were great , the urgency, the different sets, changed lyrics, debuting new songs, no encore. Those days are gone. Now we have to put up with Blue Monday every gig, but hey I will be at the next UK gigs, It's great abunch of circa 40 year olds jumping up and down and singing.

Wife and I are flying to the UK, despite the nazification of airline security, to catch The Order. I doubt they will ever play in the US again. Love to hear hurt and We All Stand.
