Just picked it up at Best Buy for $14 USD and was pleasantly suprised to find a dvd in it. Still pissed off that the $2 coupon for 24HPP expired 5 days ago.

I thought that TPK seemed a little short. Great to see Barney getting all Whoed destroying the equipment. Any details on that??
I was pissed cause I'd already bought the 24HRPP DVD when it came out, and the discount was of no use to me.
$2 USD. That is my tip for 2 pints. $14 would be 3 pints change.
Back to the cd. Low-Life version of TPK?!?!?!?!? I did enjoy Shellshock, having ignored that tune since 1987. Radio edit of HTS ok.
International gets a fair bit of bashing, some of it justified, but to me it's worth having if only for the remastered Thieves Like Us. Still can't believe TLU never made it on to Retro in any shape or form...
...womder if u guys noticed TLU on the (best of) CD was loud-and-distorted as hell compared with other tracks....so I guess having TLU on INTERNATIONAL is a good thing, then...
Exactly right! The one on International sounds sweet and pure and really gives the track the treatment it deserves.

No arguing with that!! But back to that pesky (best of) ca-rap...I know the US version is a bit on the load side, maybe a bit too much. Did notice some distortion in TLU. I also have the UK version in the Boxset, but never listened to it. I have the Japanese version as well which is the same track listing as the UK, but here I have noticed no such distortion...
so were they mastered differently you think for the different countries??![]()

Yes, one and the same. It's been on everything, just about, from BBC radio to bootleg city. Not the best of gigs either IMHO, notable only for the debut of True Faith and one of the ramshackle Sister Rays at the end.

That's amazing! I had this CD/DVD ever since it was first released and I never took the time to even watch the darn thing!! If ol' One Brain didn't bother to mention that the True Faith Viddy was different than the plain bagel version...I would've never bothered to watch it! Thanks One Brain!!
Now you got the Granny Juice!! ![]()
Big songs, small dicks. I actually had the vinyl bootleg of this show but lost it in my great retreat back to Des Moines.
...

My copy of BEST OF is Australian issued...and TLU is hugely distorted
...maybe it has the same masters as UK whereas the Japs mastered their own,maybe...

Dude, that sucks. I really can't say for sure whether or not it was consciously re-mastered...but all I know for sure is that the JN version (Same tracklisting as UK) has not such distortion. Weird.![]()

Yeah, and I also got the French 2-disc version especially for the remastered 'Temptation '87'. The remaining tracks eventually made it to Retro, but that one didn't, so my money wasn't completely wasted.

I have an unsubstantiated theory that the version of 'Theives Like Us' on 'The Best Of' is a different mixdown of the track. Admittedly, it's the same length, levels, effects, EQ and structure, but sometimes in the studio producers make two or three different takes as mixdowns, in order to choose which one worked best. These days we have automated mixing desks, of course, but if this were a different mixdown "take" of the song, it would explain why there is an extra 'knife' in the line 'cuts your life like a broken knife' that is not present on the 12", 7" or Substance versions.
When 'The Best Of' was mastered, the engineers no doubt went back to the original master tapes, and may well have remastered the wrong version, and boosted it a bit too much, causing the distortion. Then again, I could be completely barmy.
Anyone else got theories on this?

Yep, and before anyone asks the Beeb only recorded TF for the purposes of the TF video.
The whole gig is available on bootleg but alas not in professinal form :(

That version of the True Faith video actually has a different edit of the single to the UK seven inch, if you listen carefully - makes you wonder why they do all these different versions, doesn't it?
Doesn't that version of the video also have a few excerpts from the Blue Monday 1988 video in it, or am I getting mixed up with something else?

It's the "Album Edit" as opposed to the "Remix Edit" used for the other version of the video. You can find it on the True Faith US promo CD single. I'm guessing this is the original video which may have been put together before the song had been remixed.
