Mesh / Cries and whispers

Can someone please explain the whole FACTUS8 - Substance (CD2) - EGG12" mislabelling thing for me...

I can try. Somehow somebody at Factory managed to list the song that begins "below the surface...." as Mesh instead of Cries and Whispers on Substance, and it kind of stuck. Even though Steve Morris has confirmed which is which, there are still some people out there that refuse to accept that Factory got it wrong in the first place !

To confirm though, the one with the descending bassline and the line "we made a contract in a field of snow" (or whatever it was) is Mesh, and the other one is definitely 100% Cries and Whispers.

FBN8 has it right on the label but wrong on the sleeve (or maybe the other way round )

Factus8 and Retro are right, Substance CD is wrong.

Can't remember whether the Substance cassette was wrong or right.

The cassette's got them labelled the wrong way round...

has anyone noticed that both songs had completely different lyrics and vocal melody when they were played live in 80/81? also, they were both sung by different band members to the recordings. and another trivial fact is that when cries was performed in 83 in the US it could have been the first time it had the 'below the surface' lyrics as per the record. ....no?

Thought the Retro booklet had cleared this up once and for all...

I did actually. Posted a thread to add to the confusion about two years ago which pointed out that it sounds as though Hooky sings "cries and whispers" during the early versions of what we always correctly knew to be Mesh !!!!!

on cries and whispers hooky sings the verses in the early live days and steve sings the chorus parts (check blackpool/boston for this), the verse lyrics are different to the record, the chorus the same.

Thanks - The 12" of Everythings Gone green has both songs on the B-side. However on the cover they're listed as Mesh then Cries and Whispers and on the record they are listed and play in the opposite order. That is to say C+W and then mesh.

If someone was getting the names for the songs from the 12"s say like for Substance it would be very easy to get the names round the wrong way especially when you consider that the 7" has got Procession on the other side.

Having read the other posts here I now think that this is what must have happened. Someone getting the name of the b-side from the 12" single of EEG and not noticing that the cover and record had the songs in opposite order.

If it takes over 20 years to get the names straight, then the apparent song titles gain a life of their own. I bought Substance and later the EGG 12", which of course convinced me that the 3rd song on Substance Disc 2 was called Mesh and the other more obscure track was Cries and Whispers. I eventually bought the 1981-1982 EP on CD (Canadian release) and decided that it was mislabeled, although I didn't mind because I didn't have what I thought was Cries and Whispers on CD at that point.

It's too late for me to change the song titles in my mind, and the better song should get the better title anyway. Cries and Whispers is the title of a dour Bergman film.

The correct title is Fries And Biscuits.

Steve Morris told me this because he intended there to be a sequel to this one 10 years later, and sure enough, he kept to his word and gave us one:

Tasty Fish.
