It seems that all of Barney's more personal songs treat drug/alcohol use as a love/hate relationship with a woman, and in some cases, a relationship with a woman as the way a drug affects you.

I agree. Although some of Barney's lyrics can be quite deep, in the cases of All Day Long and 1963.
