Well fuck me with a billiard cue, won't we get a lot of people subscribing to this thread ! Wish I'd had a bet on Mike naming Blue Monday as the worst song...

There are several contenders for this "accolade", most of which are lazy exponents of this "same song structure of rhythm chords up front, rolling bassline, tight unadventurous drums and banal rhyming lyrics " that has been the staple diet of album fillers for so many years. Shite like Weirdo, Way of Life, Slow Jam, all songs that go round a simple cheap musical theme, a real cop out compared to some of the more complicated song arrangements. These songs have always sounded just tossed off, like they didn't care what they were doing or what anyone thought. Compare these to even Republic, where the songs people don't seem to like are the ones that don't contain Hooky (but which you would almost certainly like if they were done by another band). Republic is growing on me, but there is still one that I can't abide, Times Change.

Of course I disagree about the three you name above, I didn't get Way Of Life for 15 years but I finally adore it now, just give it more chances, it's a perfect guitar pop song. I agree about Times Change too, it can be a contender, there aren't many actually... maybe something from the side B of Movement, or Liar, and those weak instrumentals like MTO... I'd say Vietnam, but I guess it doesn't count.

I hate every little counts, behind closed doors, slow jam, rock the shack, times change ... all in about equal amounts.

It's had nearly 18 years, and I still bloody hate it with a passion. It's shite, it's a parody of several of their other songs. It is probably intended as a joke. If that's perfect then you need your lugs cleaning !

At the end of the day it's personal taste. I like MTO but dislike Way Of Life. Shellshock wasn't a classic but listenable live. I used to hate Hurt but now love it mainly due to Studio 54 which drew me back to the original. Spooky, Every Little Counts are also annoyances but fair play to someone who thinks they're great.

That bollocks arse trash piece of vinyl they call the Sub-culture 12" - a great song ruined!

Hurt was always a strange one live. If the sound was good at the venue, Hurt was good. If the sound was not very clear at the high end, it sounded shite, the bass distorted on the high notes. I always thought of it as a waste of six minutes when they were playing shorter sets, but now it would be a pleasant reintroduction.

That's the version though, not the song.

Bizarre Love Triangle - it's maybe not their worst song but it's the worst one I've had to listen to on a semi-regular basis as they've played it every time I've seen them live since 1986.

That Subculture 12" version, an atrocity of a decent original. Why?

Liar is horrible, yes. I dislike the tune of Every Little Counts, and the lyrics are stupid as Hell and childish. But that's about all I hate. I even like Chemical and Times Change. But I must say I also hate Lonesome Tonight with a passion.
