OK fettlers, in a straight no holds barred contest of as many rounds as it takes we're gonna fight this one out! Why is it that so many normally sane people HATE this magnificent 'rock fest ' of a song? I think it's one of the best on the album, indeed perhaps THE best. Many of you hate it, why? Who else loves it, why? Let's get it on!! ![]()
SLOW JAM - Funky Chicken or Dead Duck??

Not a fan in the slightest. it stops all the momentum of the album after the magnificent Primitive Notion. Barneys voice is too dominant and doesn't suit his style. The lyrics are terrible, they don't work and lack humour. It stinks
Well mr. muffy...I like every song on this latest discus by the order...including another song that is hated by everyone but the Dutch and Jeff (obviously referencing RTS here). I can't give you one damn good reason as to why I like them. I mean, I could just as easily explain to you why I prefer ribeye steaks to fried liver (sorry if this offends you Huntsman). Or on an even different note, I like iced tea, but can't stand hot tea...now go figure that one out...

Why do the lyrics have to have humour, it's just a 'rock out' tune?? ![]()
What other excuse is there for the 'Arithmetic' line if it wasn't meant to be funny? Which it isn't.
I like it because it's an upbeat rockin tune, mumbo jumbo meaningless lyric, it's New Order enjoying themselves. It rocks! ![]()

I've got nothing against 'Slow Jam' per se. It's just that, when I play the album, it's the moment I don't pay attention anymore.
I just don't care for that song, that's all.
Muffy...I didn't think you had to wank, seeing as how all the ladies find you so damn smooth.....

All right, Muffy, as I said in another thread, the music is boring and the lyrics are excruciating. And I was all by myself, all you guys were out partying on a Friday night.
Snake... I think I've got it.
Death Jam is one and only song by New Order that sounds like a 'poor' Electrical Light Bulb song that was left in Joseph Parr's 'back burner' king size bargain bucket beneath his bunk bed at Barney's.

I love it when all the gangs battling and the Mod(erator)Father Patty has to try and cool things down. As Smonkey Ball Boy has ignited the slow burning fire of death once again we should all rise up and release fireballs at the little weasel until his miniature flames have burnt out on the back of his neckline.
Your out numbered 1,000 to one Muff tube.. you could try and escape at the rear, but snake has his army of spear chucking pythons ready, you could attempt a skew whiff sideways faulter but Pastie has his kama chameleons prompted... you could attempt a forward advance but I will cut you with an open blade and drink your bitter tasting love piss.
The choice is yours but I must warn you... you may never get back to Kansas and see your lass again. Think about it... a Muffy without minge and a section of flanger to suckle at of an evening.

You know, Muffy, it's occurred to me that you're just pretending to like Slow Death to be contrary and cause a stir. Is that it?
Patrick have you been eating fish recently because that's the second best thing you've said all year. The other one being about mackerel.
If this 'is' a Muffball of windup material I would have been reeled in hook, line and sinking ability. And I would hate myself for it and never speak to the get ever again... until I needed to unleash filth on him.

Incidentally Patty, did you like the Offspring or the Outcast boys?
Huntsy, I frankly don't recall saying anything about mackerel.
It was the Offspring, Huntsy. How could you forget?
Muffy, I apologize. I hadn't seen this conversation until now, and I feel obliged to come to your rescue. I have to agree. Slow Jam is the best song on the album. After seeing it get trashed by all these so-called New Order/Joy Division fans, I listened to it yet again, trying to figure out what possibly could be wrong with it. And after I listened to it again, I said to myself, "Nope. They're completely wrong. This is really good." I don't see what's so terrible. And what's amazing to me is that we could differ so much. I mean, here I think it's the best song, while others say its the worst. Go figure. And as far as that "arithmetic" line is concerned, I think it's funny. I laughed the first time I heard it. Go Barney.

Have you seen my face David? It's way beyond saving. I voted it no.1 because every other fettler was saying it was turds and piss. There's nothing worse than every bugger all aggreeing, the blowjobs all round syndrome, 'I think this, oh yes, so do I'! Bollocks to that! Who cares which is best, which is worst. All that matters is that each individual likes or dislikes it for their own reasons. I would'nt say it's the worst song on the album, but it damn sure aint the best, not by a long chalk! ![]()
So I see... your now calling us sheep workers following each others backsides for ideas. Well, now Muffster... that was stooping a bit low even for you you little mongoose fettler.
I can't recollect any time in my whole life I copied off anyone.. except in maths when I couldn't manage 2 divided by zero, zero, 2, divided by, zero zero zero.

Well, too bad you let these guys get to you. I'm afraid your votes still count. And since you've gone over to the other side, I might as well take this up where you left off. Certainly on this particular site the song is hated, but I've been to a few others, and there are many NO fans out there who love this tune. Usually, it's the Joy Division lovers who think its great, because, let's face it, if Ian was singing it instead of Barney, you'd think it was Joy Division.
Muffy you Tommy Tanker.
Very good...are you going to retract your Primitive Notion comment as well.
In terms of Blowjob syndrome, which I too despise on the board, have you even seen that WorldinMotion board. Christ it's dull. If someone has a difference of opinion they sweetly apologise beforehand. 'It makes me feel sick'.

Originally posted by Patrick Are you saying you don't like arithmetic, Huntsy?
Actually I now enjoy it. When I started my business I managed my own accounts so when it came to the 'real world' I had to do it. At school though, I was good at English and poor at Maths. Sorry to disappoint you Pats but the old Hunts has his flaws. Still, I make up for what I'm not good at by eating plenty of snacks.
Hey Pats we haven't had a one on one for a while, I'm putting this purely down to the increased activity on the boards and will hope to get back to a few intrigues soon.
I've just read Muffy's admition that it was a hoax... he better watch his back from now on. Again Patty, you have shone through the filth with your bright beacon of intelligence hope...

Huntsy, with your imagination it's obvious to even an uneducated fettler like me that you don't need to copy, but that is not what I said. Yes, i've seen it. It's dull as fuck, in fact the only post I ever made on it was telling the buggers to wakey wakey. At least here the general banter usually keeps things interesting, and with the assembled cast of characters a laugh is always assured. I used to Yahoo chat quite regularly but the feckers on that are all intent on insulting you and have absolutely fuck all to say. This forum is the best i've come across, lucky for me it's New Order based. ![]()

Muff, Slow Jam should be a very distant no.10 in your list. Even the much maligned Rocky Shacky has something about it, not just a lame, feeble, painful cry for help like Slow Jam

To me Seb, 'Ode To A Smelly Outhouse' has too much of a Primals influence on it. Not that I dislike the Primals, au contrere, I just don't want them on an Order album. I think the two offending articles have a similar sound to them though. ![]()
I think I should add though that the version of 'Rotten Shag' on the BBC session was really skankin, infinately better than the album version. ![]()
I thought you might be interested in comments about Slow Jam from the message board at neworderweb.com:
run: "I agree, I think slow jam is the best song on the cd too. The first time I heard it, i thought it by far had the best chorus melody on the whole cd (Primitive Notion and Turn My Way have the other 2 best choruses on the cd in my opinion). The best lyrics for a chorus are in this song too. "I dont want the world to change, I like the way it is, Just give me one more wish, I cant get enough of this" If that is not a classic N.O. chorus (vague, but thought provoking) then I don't know what on this new cd is. The deadpan vocals on the verses are Barney at his best, it sets up the chorus great! Hook adds the great bass line in the chorus too!!! The jam til the end of the song after the break in the middle takes me back to "As It Is When It Was" style...monotonous and driving! You know, I was and still am not a real big fan of the songs that get toooooo techno/electronic by NO. I know some of thier biggest songs were the electronic ones but that is because they appealed to a wider (more top 40, trendy, cheesey) audience. Give me Hook on the bass, Barney with the guit, Steve on the drums (not programming them) and Gillian on the other guit...like "Ceremony". That style is N.O. at their best."
Twistjg26: "Agreed, a great song. Much better than Rock the Shack. Better than any dancy tune off of Technique. Almost seems upbeat and happy. But Run Wild is still running through my veins."
p0lychr0me: "No contest the best song on the record ... perhaps with new lyrical poignancy after Sept 11th? With the plea to keep things the way they are and just celebrate the simple things? Love this track."
Britrock1: "I often have this song on repeat on my cd player. It is the most straight up rock n roll track on the cd. Anyone who doesn't like it must be those who are stuck in "New Order = Blue Monday or anything that sounds like it" mode. I love Joy Division, and this song is the most Joy Division-like N.O. tune since Ceremony."
p0lychr0me: "Totally agree Britrock ... this album doesn't take off and fly for me until Slow Jam --- I also think it sounds very contemporary (with the electronic effects), almost Blur or Gorillaz sounding. Love the guitar and bass ... almost vintage Power, Corruption, and Lies era. Strong work after the weakness of Republic."
Also, what is wrong with the title of the song...it is not State of the Nation, Mr. Disco or Spooky....later
"Even though it's monochrome, tells me what I should do"
Muffy, as I've documented befored I am quite fond of Lick the Crack. I do agree though it is a bit PScreamish for a NO album. It's more the sort of thing I would have expected of Leccytronic, and in fairness it may have fitted in better on TT

As I said soooooooooo many times around here.. I like this song, it was my pick for 4th single until everyone started bashing the song, so I went for Close Range after that... :D
But it's catchy.. it might be my #3 on the album as well (After Turn My Way and Crystal)....
I'd love to listen to a real remix, not trancy-boring stuff...
