Good point and I think I will agree...however Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys can play any one of their 100+ songs on any given night, so 'difficult programming" is not an excuse.
yeah, the whole complitcated and time consuming to program line is total bullshit. i've seen some phenomenal live electronic artists (Orbital/Underworld/Plaid/Gus Gus) who can lay down pretty much anything they want. The technology today makes it EASIER to do than in the mid 80's. The fact is they are LAZY and DO NOT GIVE A FUCK. Only Hooky cares. The rest would rather license Blue Monday to whoever wants it and collect the checks.

id be inclined to aggree. whats so fucking hard about programming a few songs. the band , or their crew dont have to do it, just make sure its up to scratch.
technology must have come a long way since 89. surely the masters of technique have the various synth lines in there. plug em into a computer, jig em around, etc.
if they can blurt out blue monday and blt, then why not the classics off technique?

I would hope that a "professional" outfit like New Order would have all of their sequences stored somewhere safe. The only time consuming part would be deciding which sounds need to be played by each MIDI track. Certainly TPK features pretty generic sounds by today's standards, hell even a good quality PC soundcard could almost carry it off!
I haven't read this month's Sound on Sound but I remember Roger Lyons talking about doing something with the LWTUA multitrack tapes before the comeback. The only possible reason for doing that would be to sample the raw sounds as far as I can tell. That level of detail in the reproduction of the sound is, I think, a bit over the top. Do any of us REALLY want New Order live to sound exactly like their records?
Their equipment after tours in the 80s was probably sold off to earn some of their money back, since Factory gobbled a great deal of it. Either that, or the machines were so unreliable (or which ever band member/roadie was handling them), an entire song could be lost, and hence, gone live forever :(

"Run" I will grant you, just with "Fine Time" The lyrics are intentionally campy and I just thought it misrepresented the rest of the album. Like a "rock the shack". Maybe it's because I only first listened to it years after it was released but "Fine Time" to me, and to a few people I know is just not a good NO song compared to others. In hindsight, it sounds terribly dated today wheras the rest of them seem to hold up I think. To each their own though.

It seems as though they were all bunged on the 5" discs for the Emulator, and they don't know how to/can't be bothered to update them and convert them for the set-up they have today.
Having spent months sequencing many of them to MIDI for our own use myself, they ain't that difficult to do, certainly they could resurrect some old favourites if they could be arsed to, we can only assume that they can't be bothered.

what's all this about programming FFS? they run off tape now its not going to be difficult to do is it.
I even believe that the guitar from the start of regret is off tape too. looking at finsbury i dont believe he's playing it.
