Would you like to see Phil Cunningham join NewOrder Officially

I say yeah. why not? he seems a nice chap, plays well,and is better than moby or billy corgan joining.

some people round here seem to have a problem with him. Why?

I dont have a problem with him,yeah let him play live,but join the group NO WAY. They dont NEED to replace GG,its not like they cant use keyboards is it? Whats next,let Dawn Zee join too? Moby,Corgan & Gillespie only collaborated with them dont forget.

I think Phil knows his role, he knows he can't contribute to the music like the others, it's not a bad thing itself, Ian didn't either. I guess he'd just play on records and add little things here and there, just a bit less than Steve... he already did something on Vietnam and the new Revenge songs (other than little bits on live songs) and his stuff sounds alright, not too invasive and good. I don't like the concept of session musicians and he's an alright bloke so I say yes, definitely.

(Unfortunately the band seem to have decided differently as they're talking about a "guest guitarist" for the new album, but let's see...)

I think they should stay as they are, fine having him on stage live but the rest of the time he should just be the tea boy. Perhaps I'm just Jealous

I'm in the "why not" category. Add Roger Lyons too...give them publishing credits where they deserve it...it's only fair. Does it really matter, given some people's suspicions that Gillian's musical input was fairly minimal to begin with?

Otherwise we're back to the "No-Names" or "Witch Doctors of Zimbabwe" or whatever they were known as in their early three-piece days...

Ian didn't contribute to the music? Well apart from giving the band a direction by introducing them to the music of Kraftwerk, The Velvet Underground and The Doors and spotting the riffs for She's Lost Control, Insight, Twenty Four Hours... I think you're undervaluing Steve's contribution too. As far as recruiting another permanent member, well do they really need to? They obviously need someone extra for playing live but other than that I don't see that there's any need for studio work. Don't have anything against Phil Cunningham whose presence certainly seems to beef up their live sound but I don't think it's necessary to have him as a permanent member...not that it's really any of my business!

I'd like to see him stay with the band as touring member, but not become an official member, simply for the reason that it wouldn't seem much like New Order with a new young man in the band. I'm all for the oldies playing themselves out and not getting gradually replaced by younger members. What will be next? Barney, Steve, and Hooky all decide to give it up one-by-one and The Killers slowly take over the band by filling their spots until New Order has become a New Order cover band?

On some level, I can see where this would feel like a "betrayal" of Gillian's contribution to the group, to have someone just come along and join "New Order" (assuming they wouldn't opt for yet another name-change). But then again, you have to recall that, back when Gilly joined in '80, there wasn't any assumptions that it was a "betrayal" of Ian (who, being dead, was unable to rejoin anyway). So, if Gilly isn't looking to rejoin anytime soon (I would hope the door is always open to her coming back sometime), and the guys are actually considering adding Phil to the offical line-up, then why not? It's not like his joining will negate her contributions (much as her joining didn't negate Ian's)

Now, of course, there seems to have been some offical comment a few months back that Gillian was offically out of NO, but I have a feeling were she to want to return the lads wouldn't say no

Zwan broke up several months ago. Corgan's now going solo. Anyway, Corgan is a poor rhythm guitarist, although on Zwan's album and SP's first 2 albums, he has some awesome solos.

No. I want at least the possibility of Gillian returning. AS far as I know Gillian was never an official member either, as she was never told if she was in or not.

Phil and Roger Lyons haven't actually 'written' anything for New Order, have they? So you can't give them publishing credits.

Touring member, yes. Full-time member, no. Like Slippy (and, I think, a few others) said, they need to get Gillian back. Maybe when her and Steve's kids start school, it'll be a more realistic prospect.

hi, everyone, I'm new here - although reading for quite a while -

anyway: please NO. just watched the Finsbury DVD and as technically good Phil may be as a guitarist, it doesn't do the songs too well. Listen to the senseless guitar parts on Blue Monday, the way he plays on Transmission - it changes the songs, as Phil does a little too much on them for my taste - maybe otherwise he would be too bored - Gillian may not have been that good, so she was playing minimal straight parts what I always preferred. and as unrealistic as it may be: Get Gillian back on stage with a masterkeyboard and a powerbook!

NO should stay as they are, a threesome (unless GG wants to rejoin, of course). They can invite anybody to assist on any tours, the rest they're capable of doing themselves.
