Yeah it ain't half hot mum,It's freezin', but this isn't a topic about advice for the elderly and infirm.What I'm after is cover versions that are better than the original.i.e. Don't Read The Watchtower-Jimini Hendry(Lenny's dad's cravat) or Saint Etienne 1,Liverpool 0-Only Football Can Break Your Heart,Saint Etienne 1, Liverpool 3-Let's Perfect Kiss And Make Up

Lighthouse version of One better than U2? Is this a sort of joke? No way! I just saw U2 play One live last week, and it was incredible.

The Propellerheads version of the James Bond Theme was top notch.

So was James Taylor Quartet's version of the Starsky and Hutch theme a classic. Actually JTQ have done a number of TV/film tunes as well.

Oh yes the Fred E.P! I recall that Richard Fairbrass from RSF duetted with Sarah on that one. :p
The record included a cover performed by Flowered Up and a third group, which I've forgot, as well.

The Rockingbirds were the third groop - doing "Deeply Dippy" Flowered Up did "Don't Talk Just Kiss" and the guy duetting with luscious Sarah on the Et's cover wasn't Richard Fairbrass at all, but, shock, horror!! actually Mr Wiggly Wigster of Saint Wig himself Pete Wiggs . TRUE!! :p

You are right, I suppose. I regret not owning said record and I only heard the tracks when it was released. Must be eight or nine years ago. Hearing it was a real blast, though. And Pete on vocals... hahahahaha

I've only seen the Ets once, in 1998. Bob Stanley made another disappearance and Sarah's opening line was: "Hello, anyone seen Bob? Well, if you DO see him, tell him he missed the gig!"

St Etienne played my years leaving do at Uni. I didn't know whether to dance, or like 95% of the other blokes there just stand and stare at the gorgeous Sarah Cracknell...

Are they still doing stuff? I know the guys still DJ a bit

OOOh Seb, please don't get me started about the divine Ms Cracknell and the boys of the Et. Saint Etienne just released a CORKING compilation recently, rounding up all their Heavenly releases and fave LP tracks/b-sides. as a sort of expanded version of 1995's "Too Young To Die", this came out in October and is called "Smash The System - Singles And More (The Heavenly Years)" [yup, bit of a mouthful] but didn't really sell much seeing as it was buried beneath an avalanche of other cack that was doing the rounds. This compilation doesn't include any of the recent "Sound Of Water" stuff however, as that was released on Mantra.

You'd better go and seek it out Seb boy! This is an essential purchase - if you must buy one compliation this Christmas to vibe you up - this one is the one!

By the way, I was also saddened :cry: and delighted :clap: :jump: - SIMULTANEOULSY!! - at the news I got from the St. Etienne fanclub newsletter a couple of months ago, that Sarah is about to introduce into this world a fair likeness of her wonderful self during early December. Yep - she's spoken for, and both she and her partner Martin (Kelly - ah, if only, if only it was...Gray...) deserve our warmest and heartiest congrats.

They'll be back mid next year with another wondrous offering anyway..... :nod:

This'll make you sick, but last year at the "Sound Of Water" tour, I got backstage again and chatted to the band for the second time since I first met them in '98. Got some pix taken of me and Sarah tete-a-tete. (oh yes!) and also a couple of me sandwiched between both their equally slinky backing singers: Charlotte and Leanne (both luscious too). You're gonna hate me now.....I just know it. :D

Since St. Etienne signed to subpop in the US they've been to Seattle 3 times. The first time they played near christmas and we got to hear I Was Born On Chrismas Day and People Get Real. My roomates at the time got backstage and whooped it up with Sarah and the boys. I had a towel that was autographed by Ms (Mrs.) Cracknell but at a certain point in your life you realize how unimportant things like that are and that the music is what really matters. They are pretty good live and I can't wait to hear the stuff produced by AIM. The St.Etienne website is excellent don't you think? I enjoy the song list with the samples/inspiration explained.
