What is the future for New Order?

Any thoughts on this. I know I want them to go on indefinately but I'm not sure I am realistic.

Yeah, only because collecting tapes of all gigs since then is just an additional pain in the arse!

I will bet a grand this is the last real album. Then we`ll get a new greatest hits followed by those supermarket £3.99 collections.

I fear this could well be the last album as their half centuries approach.:(

Whatever the future holds, we should be grateful for what we have already received from these guys.

But...they did (not counting WIM)...and have reformed no less than two or three times, depending on how you count the present shenanigans. They were smart enough never to admit it. Probably helped to keep their albums in print, though I'm not sure that London got their $$$s worth from the Best Ofs, Rest Ofs, Retros, and Internationals they had to issue instead of proper stash. I wonder if the 3 Electronic, 3 1/2 Revenge/Monaco, and 2 Other Two albums make up for the 2-3 proper NO albums we missed as a result.

I can see this next one being their final album. They are taking their time with it because they want it to be perfect but you wonder how long they can continue being in each other's company working for so long and still enjoy it. I see them doing a few gigs after the new album drops and then Steve tending to his daughter, Barney going off wind-sailing and Hooky doing god knows what.

I think they'll end up like that lounge act singing LWTUA in '24 Hour Party People.'

musically they can still offer..but they will never recreate the live buzz pre 89.

I also 'sort of' agree... they've never been as influential or musically creative since 1989. :( Although I still loved MOST of their music, it's just not at the cutting edge of ANY scene any more. They've basically become a pop/rock act (Get Ready), and I'm not too fond of that.

They've made great stuff and it'd have been ridiculous to expect them still being innovative and yet they sound more advanced than any young retro band, anyway they did great pop music and hopefully we can expect another album after this since Hooky said it was hard imagining to play their old stuff in their fifties but they finally accepted it, that means we can hope to see them becoming really old farts like the Stones and that'd be OK, they've got nothing to prove anymore, and you see, the Stones still release the good tune once in a while, like Don't Stop...

I figure they've got one cracking album left in them. Ally that with a hit single and a bit of exposure to the masses and there may be potential for a few more great live shows. They are after all awkward sods and would derive great pleasure from confounding new fans with a set list of album tracks two decades old. then again they are lazy twats!

I am saddened to hear that Hooky is at it again with this Freebass thing, lot of old bollocks if you ask me, some time ago he was saying New Order was his top priority, guess he's got bored with Barney's fixation with jigs when he'd rather talk about gigs.

Christ, it's like reading the obituaries here!

Will they pack it in soon? I would have thought the magic would be wearing off. Who can tell and who gives a damn right now, got the spirit wheres the feeling, let it out somehow. Doh!

Just enjoy the music you've got. Actually, thinking about it, I wouldn't have thought there were too many bands that have covered the expanse of music that NO/JD have. Everything from 'Gutz' to 'Elegia'. Maybe thats why I don't get sick of listening to them after all these years. There is just a great selection of music. Enjoy it!

Things is, as John Peel commented when playing 'Temptation' a while back, they sound like no other band, so even if their songs aren't as conceptual or groundbreaking as they used to be, there is still something timeless about the "sound" of any of their material, whether it's an average tune like 'Such A Good Thing' or a cracker like 'Crystal'. There's something reassuring about them still being around.

That's one acheivement of bands like New Order, Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys - they were the first to really begin writing pop songs using synthesizers, and to this day if you write a sequencer-based song (as I do all the time), there will always be someone who says it sounds like one of those bands. No band acheived the same thing with guitars - there's hundreds of guitar bands all sounding similar to Oasis, Charlatans, Stone Roses, etc. but they never get associated with their influential bands.

New Order, in particular have completely cornered one side of the market, so they may as well keep realeasing new stuff that pleases my ears! I'll just have to accept that making songs using my drum machines, samplers and synths will always draw me comparisons to them!

Agreed that they sound like no other band though. I think Get Ready was just fantastic and while probably not *innovative* (have they really been innovative since 83?) it doesn't matter - they still create their own world, and that's all that matters. One more album is probably all we can hope for, I just hope that they take a few risks with it.

To be honest, I won't be that heartbroken when they decide to call it a day. Most of my NO listening anyway is focussed on their classic period up to '85 and discovering and rediscovering vintage live stuff is still very interesting. Newer stuff like get ready is bland, fairly unoriginal rock-by-numbers which leaves little mark on me I am afraid...even though I do play it to remind me that they are still around and somehow it makes you feel less old than you are...

Don't get me wrong, I love New Order and they will always be one of my favourite Groups but there is SO much interesting and innovative new stuff coming out that beats the likes of Get ready hands down and life is too short. I would love it though if they could come up with a belter like PCL again, but seeing as they are so lazy and formulaic now I won't hold my breath. Trouble is, you and I know they are capable of it - what a waste...

Yeah - now's a Fine Time for seeking the Truth to all this Confusion, I think I'll Run my car All The Way back to The Village at 60 Miles An Hour, gaze into my Crystal ball and predict that Hooky and Barney will have a massive ruck over mixing the final cut of the album - Barney will deck Hooky over the head with his guitar, Hooky will swing his bass into Sumner's ample backside in retaliation, Steve will storm out in a huff back to his farmhouse and the band will release an official press statement vowing never to work with each other ever again. I think Steve will be the happiest of the three about that.

And the album may be picked up by some small label like Sanctuary Records (who recently released the Moz album) and offered a low-key posthumous release.

good reply mark! whatever happens from now on,if they pack it in or not,just stop yourself,take stock and put the entire no back catologue on then you will see that our beloved new order are one of the most diverse bands ever to come out of the uk ,possibly the world! from synth music to dance to indie to rock(ish). how many bands over the last twenty years have been this influential? people keep banging on about oasis,ALL oasis songs sound the same to me,yes,indie/britpop was dead and along came oasis-bollocks! they filled a niche at their time! new order have filled so many niches at various times throughout their career,if this is the end then so what........ they came,they saw, and f**k me they conquered! a fairly unpromoted band that sold 1 million copies of the substance album in america !what does that tell you? my girlfriend tells me i'm stuck in a time warp. truth is there is only one genre of music that i'd like to be permanently stuck into - NEW ORDER ! it is never over! regards

Eh up Steve. Been gone a while cos I had no computer and couldn't be arsed about the rip-off internet cafes, so me and Lorraine managed to go five months without the need to check up on our emails (which are usually 95% spam anyway). It's back up and running now anyway - cos I teach at art college it's one of those cruddy IMac thingys that are pretty unreliable anyhow.

Anyway - I did tell you about the time my missus suggested I get rid of my entire New Order collection didn't i? Or put it all on E-Bay (shock!!) To which I was so mortified I suggested in reply that she may as well get rid of ALL her Smiths and Psychedelic Furs records likewise. She had no answer for that. So my collection is safe for now then...

at this point in their career (more than 25 years) any good songs at this point is just a bonus... face it, even thou Get Ready sounds like the band somewhat revitalized, and was good to here them back, the album was still middling and weak on songwriting... few 25 year old bands make great music... Wire did a pretty good try to comeback, but Get ready filled up with querstionable bloated material.... can they really take it up another notch with another record.... its possible, but unlikely. Barney has used way to many drugs by this point anyway, just be happy that he is functional at this point!
