There are some timeless moments on record with Mr. Sumner behind the mic stand. For example, with the sun shining in Seattle again I put on Electronic (first album) and got about 2minutes in before the chorus of Idiot Country kicked in "it's an open act of defiance and it's aimed directly at you..." I love that chorus and the way Barney sings it is perfect. One of my favorite things about the Stone Roses was how Ian Brown could deliver crucial/harsh lines in a whisper (Shoot you Down).

I thought i should contribute some positive remarks about our dear Barney. One hundred Slow Jam's can never take away the long list of Gems that clutter the NewOrder catalogue.

I'm a real sucker for the longing, yearning words of "Some Distant Memory" - the finest , and most affecting song BY FAR - from that (pretty good, it has to be said) first Electronic LP. Quite how no one on this site has even touched on this gem frankly beats me. It's a gorgeous song, nicely sung, understated production, with that lovely ending - that weeping, sighing oboe refrain - you've got to be a complete brick not to be moved by that bit, I'm tellin' you. Just look at some of those words!!:

"I don't know, If we could get lost, in a city this size if we wanted to....and I don't know, if I could survive without seeing you.....and every time I see your face I feel out of place." / "I wish we were...at the beginning/ it would be so good to start again..."

Probably the most affectingly honest and emotive words Barney has written since "1963". Barney's first ever "weepie" perhaps? Whatever, I love it lots.

The first Electronic LP is full of great lyrics and Barney's vocal perfomances were excellent. I wonder why there's no rap on Get Ready (ha!).
