I vaguely recall someone mentioning seeing Here Are The Young Men + Substance on DVD and it's finally turned up at the local shop. It's 30 bones though and i want an idea of the quality before i shell out for something i have most of already. Who's seen this DVD (white sleeve with typical JD font and a detail of the famous "going down the subway steps" photo. What's the quality like in general and what is the menu like?

Weird though, you would expect something like this to be available on Amazon or so.

Haven't been to Portland for awhile Brian, so I may pick it up at the usual location, which'd be where I bought Academy. I have to buy it at any rate, my Beta VCR finally died :( after 20 plus years, I've got HATYM, Taras, and Factory Outing on that format.
It's definitely a bootleg. It looks like someone who loves Factory did it since it has FAC 445 on the spine (wasn't that the number for 24hr PPL?) and FAC XXV on the back (Closer). The insert for the DVD was printed on those perforated sheets. I guess i need to go get them.

These do not look like they come from the same source as the Academy DVD but who knows. These are shrink wrapped and at a different store than the Academy DVD.
I got one recently from Insound online. Quality of the Substance DVD is way better than VHS versions I've seen.

nope, that's not the one. this one looks 100 times better/more professional. my friend just bought a copy though and it turned out to be a major bust. he returned it 2hrs later. the menu sucks, the sound has digital distortion and the overall quality is only slightly better than the copy he made from his own VHS copies. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! Buyer Beware.

ok...Insound has the exact version i'm talking about. my friend said the menu system is terrible and the quality is no big improvement from the VHS.
its the same as the boot i pointed out except with different cover you have to do a quick look on ebay to see how many covers there are

On my copy - you can't even access the Wired Documentary.
BTW - I will also point out that the Wired Documentary from 1988 lasted only 20 minutes. So fook knows where they get an hour from??? Some dodgy quality - but it's still a must for die-hards, that is unless you have people sending you FREE copies

Not as far as I'm aware, obviously it's possible - but I can't see it. Wired was a programme on TV over here, cannae remember whether it was BBC2 or C4, but it had loads of other features in it. As I can't access it on the copy I have - I can't tell you where the interviews / documentary comes from. Off the top of ma heid - it's possible whoever created the DVD has segented together different interviews.
All of my videos and DVD's are still packed away in boxes round the Grandparents, if I get a chance I'll dig my copy out and try my luck again. The one plus about this DVD from memory was the live version of LWTUA - even though the quality was awful very few people had seen this before, kind of the same thing happened with the 3 songs from the BVYC, it took me years to get ma hands on them.....but it was well worth it
Watched this last night, and I like being correct
I suppose it's worth the dosh for the BVYC songs as the quality is just as good, if not better than the stuff floating around on videos. And for the rare LIVE version of LWTUA, that was replaced by the overdubbed vocals.
The TV stuff was disappointing for me though, mainly because I have clearer versions of them all, I will say it was good to see Tony Wilson's intro to Shadowplay, I hadn't seen that before.
Wired was indeed what I thought it was, in fact, it was only a 15 minute feature (if that) the picture again is not the greatest and there are better copies available on video. The second version of Wired is almost exactly the same with worse sound - but I think there's an extra minute or two of Paul Morley talking. It was done for Channel 4 in 1988 and features brief chats with Barney, Steve, Hooky, Tony Wilson, Rob and Alan Erasmus.
Here Are The Young Men - no complaints at all, the sound is the same as the video version.
Timbo - I watched The Sound Of Music to check on who played the Guitar, twas Barney ya big eedgit, I knew I was right! Barney is sat down playing the Electric Guitar - you can clearly see him. Hooky's on the other side of the stage out of shot. You see him playing the bass every now and then for a second or two. Twas Barney's "cutting" sound on the guitar I always talk about.....not Hooky's Bass;)
