Shug, did you read about the young lad (just 16) from the UYM (Ulster Young Militants?) who blew himself up a couple of weeks back with a home-made bomb in Northern Ireland. Had the usual Protestant paraphernalia at his funeral, wreaths from the UDA, from the UVF, UFF, etc.

And he was buried in a CELTIC kit!

Apparently, he thought sport and politics shouldn't mix.

One of the weirdest tales I've heard in a long time!

El Jarvo... watch out for Boro's Carlos Marinelli... he is utter genius. I'm a Boro fan but not overtly, I realise that they're mostly pap but occassionaly some quality gets through. Having seen Gazza in his prime, Beckham also... Shearer, Joseph Cole etc. etc. I tell you this guy is going to be big... better, possibly, than some of the aformentioned. (nothing beats Gazza though)

You heard it here first.

Either that, or Incey Wincey will put his knee-cap out in an over exuberant tackle during training. This, after Marinelli's just nutmegged him.

Well maybe that would be a good think Zarvox... I would hate to see him dwindle in the lower part of the Premier soup for too long. All I'm really saying from footy fan to footy fan is keep an eye out for him if your the type that appreciates the skillful football fella.

Never been a big fan of Ince... overrated in my opinion. Now Juninho... well, that's another story.

 this is a bit of a sore point with me,I admit he never really captured the form he showed at Anfield. But he never gave the ball away(while some colleagues earned praise running into blind allleys), made the often poor passes of his inferior team mates look good with his ability to control all the over hit ones.On the whole he was ahead of his time at intenational level IMHO.The controlled, patient passing game he was suited to was in contrast to the up and at em,attack ten times with no forethought and constantly being picked off by any decent side we came up against tactics.Anyone agree?

John Barnes was better at football than rapping.

If we're talking young hotshot talent, then Bobby Zamora has scored seven times in seven games for Brighton. Spurs and Southampton are after him, allegedly.

No fucking way:nonono: Don't get me wrong Sebsy, the fat wife beating alky was not a bad player, but to compare him with Maradona is bollocks mate, he was more famous for crying like a baby than his "silky skills" And if the stupid twat never challenged Gary Charles the way he did - he could possibly have ended up a great player. I can't stand the Bastard - seems to me like he played all his best stuff with the Forces of Darkness (Rangers!!) Best player I've watched is Henrik Larsson Best player from an opposing team Brian Laudrup or Andy Moeller of Borussia Dortmund.

Nothing special to be honest, I'd have fancied us if we'd been at full-strength (7 players out of a semi-pro squad is quite a few :)). Both sides played a 4-5-1 (us out of availability, them out of caution) and it was a game of few chances - a 30 yard free-kick from Hanlon won it. They could have pinched another at the death but we were worth a replay, and a bit pissed off that we didn't get one, but that's football !

How wrong can one man be? Laudrup better than Larsson - yer having a fucking laugh Muffster, what did Laudrup achieve in Italy other than a sore arse, so how can that possibly make him better than Henke? as for how long I've been supporting them - please remember I'm only 26, my first game was in 79 against St.Mirren when I was 4, and no I do not remember it, the first game I can recall was the semi-final of the Scottish Cup in 82 against Aberdeen and the sheepshagging bastards beat us 1-0, I went to several games up until 91 - then I started going up frequently because my dad ran Corby Emerald CSC, as for Charlie I agree he was fucking brilliant - but Nicholas was an out and out goalscorer, Larsson offers so much more, not only did he score 53 last year, he created fucking loads as well, and his presence alone is enough to change the attitude of the team. McAvennie was much the same as Nicholas, not as good as Charlie, but another hero of mine - I was lucky enough to have been at the 88 SC Final, where Macca got 2 late in the game to secure the double in our centenery season. I honestly think Laudrup was a good player but not as good as Henke, my all-time Celtic hero from when I was wee was Davie Provan, best player I had seen till Larsson, and again I was lucky enough to witness the greatest ever SC Final goal in 85, when Provan scored a free-kick into the top corner - McGarvey won the game with a diving header and that won us the 100th SC Final, so you see Muffster - I have plenty of experience with the games and I can safely say Larsson is the best foreign player ever to have graced Scottish Football:smoking:

Shug, Charlie Nicholas an out and out goalscorer, no way man! The guy was a BRILLIANT footballer, unbelievable skill and vision. If he had the guts to join Liverpool instead of Arsenhole he'd have been even better than Dalglish. Henrik does'nt have the same all round game as Charlie, nowhere near the skill of Laudrup OR Di Canio and in fact is such an ordinary player he was going nowhere until Celtic plucked him from obscurity to be the big fish in a very little pond. If you ever find yourself in Florence mention Laudrup, you'll soon see how he was rated in Italy. The guy was brilliant for Fiore in a roaming role and was then taken to Milan where he was restricted to the wing with no freedom to improvise. Laudrup IS the best player to ever play in Scotland, even diehard Davie cooper fans will tell you that! The league up here is the weakest it's ever been, that's why Larsson shines so brightly at the moment, i'd love to see him pluck up the courage to move down south but alas he knows his limitations and has just signed an extension to stay here which is a shame. :smoking:

Think we'll have to agree to differ on this one Muffster;)

Have to agree, Larsson looks a great player at the moment, but the standard of defending he is "faced" with...... Konterman etc..... it's hardly surprising that he looks a great player against that sort of opposition ! When he arrived in Scotland from Feyenoord, he was viewed as being too lightweight and unlikely to relish the physical side of the Scottish game, mind you Feyenoord are no slouches on that front ! He soon proved everybody wrong, but he's not playing anyone !!

Laudrup really was quality, even for an adopted hun :). Not a patch on Charlie Nicholas though.

There's too many average/shit Scandinavians in Scottish football at the moment, has been for a few years. I can't help feeling that the Old Firm domination is driving talented Scots kids down to play for average teams in England rather than trying to be the best in Scotland - I may be wrong, interesting to see what people think. If there were 4 or 5 good teams rather than 2 then a group of 4 maybe, then there would be more opportunity for local players to develop and ultimately improve the national side.

If the proposed "phoenix" league comes into place it'll certainly be interesting to see how Celtic and Rangers do, but as for shoving them in the 2nd league....Fuck off. Henriks scored a few for Sweden as well though. i'm sure he'd do a decent job in the Premiership - maybe Liverpools new signing after foolishly selling Leeds the League title last night.

The Scots league is really poor at the moment - for example when they were trying to flog Burchill last year, nobody in the Premiership were even bothered despite him being an international. Bar the Glasgow teams, all the teams in the SPL would struggle in the English 1st division.

it's typical English Football arrogance to ask Celtic and Rangers to play in a second division. Cant see this Phoenix shit happening though - the greedy feckers in the current Premiership would never allow any of their precious TV monies to go elsewhere.

Anyone remember Laudrup's aborted adventure(?) at Chelsea. Dear, oh dear. What was he on? 75k p/w or something? Farcical. Agreed, a brilliant footballer, but only in bursts, much like Larsson to be honest. He's either brilliant or he's anonymous, isn't he? Same of Gazza. And certainly Barnes. Of all the players thus far listed, only perhaps Maradona has ever shown any consistency to his game, or indeed mettle. A true world beater, in a league of his own in the modern era.

If I had to choose one brilliant player in the current game though, I'd have to go with Roy Keane. So what if he can't bury 40 yard free-kicks or dribble past 5 men, he's still the one reason ManU have dominated the current premiership (their only recent hiccup was in the year he did his cruciate). First name on the team sheet for me every time. And I'm not a Man U supporter. Much as I like fancy dans, deft flicks and back-heels you can't beat a good old-fashioned lung-busting, ball-breaking, badge-kissing hardman leading your boys out. Quality. Every team should have one. Keep football a contact sport!

I think Burchill's a tad unlucky. He's just never had a decent run to prove himself. He did alright at Brum and at Ipswich and two of the lads I do New Order gigs with absolutely worship him - got 4 in 4 games or something, for Pompey, looked class in the first, and has now done his cruciate. Poor sod.

Let's face it, Celtic and Rangers demand instant success, so no youngsters are ever gonna get a decent run-out at either club. What's the bettings Ross and Maloney from the recent Old Firm encounter both end up at Port Vale or West Brom in 5 years time? (see also: Miller, McInnes, etc).

Robbie's gone with our title hopes has he? I think not but we'll have to wait and see. I didn't want him to leave but if he does, it won't harm our stronest 11 as he wasn't normally in it. Will he improve Leeds? possibly It looks as if he has already demanded first team football.

Putting 6 past Juve in 2 games, and only losing to a penalty (that never was) away? Not that bad, surely?!

And in pre-season they beat West Ham, Sunderland and Fulham. And played Man U twice, beating them once, losing to them once.

You follow the Beautiful Game at all, Niel?!

The Old Firm and their supporters excessive demands for success are the major factor in the decline of the Scottish game. Many a decent player has had to head south to average teams because they just don't get a fair crack up here. Many of the foreign imports are average players at best, made to look good by a poor standard of football. As a Scot who sees a lot of premiership football i'd be inclined to say that the Old Firm would do quite well down there, and given two or three years would certainly be signing big big names as their financial clout is a match for most in the game at the moment. I think it's inevitable that they will be in the Premiership in the next few years, but only because Sky will demand it as their next big marketing tool, especially when they steam ahead with the pay per view scheme with every game available if you are willing to pay.

Bollox. Just a quick example..Last year Valencia 3 Leeds 0. this season Valencia 1 Celtic 0. Celtic had much the same record as Arsenal in the champs league this year - probably in a harder group.

Neil, Rangers and Celtic are handicapped at the moment by a very poor standard of opponent week in week out. Celtic's recent foray into the Champions league proved that they are not that far off the pace but they need harder games on a regular basis. It is only nine years since Rangers almost made the final of the Champions league, and that year they were cheated out of the final itself by Monsieur Tapie and his now famous bribing of the Russians. This season Celtic came away with great credit for their performances and were really unlucky not to go through, done out of a point in Turin by the worst decision of the season so far. Believe me, the Old Firm will do well when they get into a decent league but I guess only the passing of time will show whether or not that is true but i'm pretty confident all the same! :smoking:

Four years?

Don't think he managed four decent GAMES in an England shirt.

Are you honestly gonna say he's the best you had at Liverpool in that era? When you had Beardsley, Whelan, Hansen, Dalglish, etc. alongside him. Good in a decent "I can take people on, on the left, and get good crosses in" kind of way, but surely not the sort of player you'd ever base a team around.

I agree with every word Jarvo, but you have to remember, Laudrup and Gascoigne carried the Rangers team they were in for years. Laudrup never came to terms with the squad system at Chelsea, and being tied to the same role when he did play. He was the kind of player who was at his best when given the freedom of the pitch, just like Maradonna was.

Over 100 in all.

Watching Sunday's Old Firm game (8 bloody notes AND I missed the first half!) the Rangers player that most impressed me was Ferguson. Seems they might just have one local talent carrying the rest of those prima donnas. Unfortunately, he does somewhat emit the appearance of a fan who's accidentally run onto the pitch.

Further to your point about not basing a team around him, I think I'm qualified to say we did as I went to about 40 games a season in those days including every F.A. cup game home and away in 1989 and he was undoubtedly the star of the team.

Awright Mr. Jarvis,

In response to your comment about Barry Ferguson looking like a fan who had run on the pitch I'd just like to say your spot on. He's a wee bam and a bigot to boot. Has a habbit of going out on the town with his Rangers tracksuit on after Old Firm games and then moaning when someone leathers him.

Fuck knows why Advocaat gave him the captaincy. Though given their piss poor performance over the last two seasons long may it continue.

God Bless Marin O'Neil

As a winger/playmaker Barnes didn't barely produce for England at all. The famous goal vs Brazil, and the Argentina match '86 were about the only occasions. Whether that was the fault of the tactics the surrounding players, or Barnes himself, he was a waste of time for England. Chris Waddle for example, was a similar type of player, and far far more effective.

Good manger though wasn't he?

Chris Waddle is a classic example of what I was referring to about players receiving praise for running into blind alleys.I don't think he learned to play until he was about 29 and went to Marseille.

Hank, sorry mate, but he's the worst man ever to have advertised Lucozade Sport. How did the line go? "After 90mins hard graft"?! How many games did he take to notch that 90?!

I bow to your superior knowledge of all things Scouse, but as an independent he never did it for me.

But then the boy did play for W**ford, so that does perhaps make me rather biased.

Always felt sorry for the boy Waddle, mind. So close to being a hero when he hit the post in Italia 90. And ten mins later? Well, just shows you how fickle fans can be.

Chris used to rip defences apart in his Tottenham days. blind Alleys? Don't be silly now.Had a great spell in Marseille, returned to England and had an even better spell at Sheffield Wednesday. At least he had the ambition to go towards goal in an England shirt rather than taking the John Barnes easy route of back and across.

Talking of blind alleys, Didn't you say a certain Mr Heskey should be playing for the national team?

Talking of blind alleys, Didn't you say a certain Mr Heskey should be playing for the national team?

Hmmmmn,Chris waddle I recall a gangly guy running past the bye line, half way across the running track and then looking up just prior to finding him self draped in a millwall flag. Are we talking about the same player? Mr Barnes policy of not profligacy with the ball may be in stark contrast, but puts him higher up in my estimation.

Of course you're aware Heskey is in the National team? rightly ahead of Phillips,Cole,Fowler and Smith. Surely you don't watch his tireless , unmatchable ability to hold and shield the ball and come out with comments like"If he's so big, how come he's always on the ground?" and instead enjoy his domination of defenders on many levels i.e pace, power, skill and ariel dominance(though I'd prefer we played it on the ground more)

I quite like Bruno, though you have to admit: he DOES end up on the ground rather a lot for a big fella. He's still not the polished article really, is he? His career doesn't seem to have progressed in the past few years. If we're gonna use a link-up man then I think it should be Sheringham ahead of Heskey, but Heskey would be my no.2 choice. However, why SGE sometimes puts him on the left wing is beyond me.

Of course. I'm that voice you can probably hear right up in Liverpool calling for the useless lump of shit to be substituted.

I suppose Sven can't be right all the time.

0 goals in 19 games is unacceptable for any striker Allen..that is why he is shoved to the left wing as an excuse for his pitiful goal tally. I honestly think he is nothing more than a slightly superior Ade Akinbiyi.

Saw JK had another bid for Greenacre rejected. he's not giving up is he?

You're aware how many games Shearer managed for England without a goal Sebb? while I agree Heskey hasn't been on fire in front of goal his alround contribution is excellent,he has many similar qualities to Mark Hughes, and I do believe he is improving his game all the time. I also think he was our player of the year last year, while Owen and Fowler had injuries he was the sole outlet of are attacking play for about three months, without him we wouldn't have been left in any of the competitions we won and our league position would have been about 10 points worse off.

Originally posted by Hank Wiseass© You're aware how many games Shearer managed for England without a goal Sebb?

12 off the top of my head prior to Euro 96. the difference is that Shearer had done it before for England and had been scoring reguarly in the Premiership through his goal drought.

The difference as I see it is Shearer was largely in the team for his goals,Heskey as a foil for St Michael and as they manage this at club level replicating it at national level isn't that illogical. Are you saying Heskey doesn't have the qualities I outlined?

I think he managed 22 for us last year,so yeah domination of our scoring chart is added to the list of Heskey's never ending talents.

yup. he's a useless lump of shit.

Just coz Micky O is a little cracker doesn't mean Heskey has anything to do with his success - He rarely gets an assist for one of Owens goals. A proper foil is like what Beardsley was for Cole at Newcastle, where Beardo had a big hand in a lot of the goals Cole (or Lineker with England) scored.

Perhaps we were too boring for you to take an interest in the finer points of his contribution and all those centre-halves who say they fear facing him just lie so that Houllier and Ericson keep on picking him.

Yes, the Habs are on a big winning streak, they seem unstoppable.. again, a respectful team from the most winning team in hockey history.... the Montréal Canadiens.

Oups, sorry, wrong sport :p

I think those centre halves are taking the piss as well. And in fact coz you are so boring I tend to take more interest in the performances of individuals.

And Heskeys still crap.

As a Feyenoord supporter I can provide some background here. Larsson was always considered a big talent, but it never really came out. He never scored more than 10 goals a season, so it is a bit surprising that he turned into this goal scoring machine at Celtic. Strange thing is that Konterman was a very good defender when he played at Feyenoord and there was never any doubt he would succeed in Scotland. And what about Bobby Peta, he played for Feyenoord but only as a substitute player. And look at him now...

Niel, with all greatest respect....FUCK OFF what have the english achieved in the champions cup other than Man U? fair enough Leeds done well last year..but they never fuckin won it did they? I agree the scottish league isn't the best, but think of the money that gets pumped into the english game - Celtic & Rangers got 3 million for TV Revenue last year - Southampton got 18 million - is it any wonder why we can't compete?

Originally posted by Allen Jarvis Anyone remember Laudrup's aborted adventure(?) at Chelsea.

Totally agree Allen, Laudrup was not good enough so he fucked off...Basically As for Roy Keane...fucking love him mate, and yes he'd be first on my team sheet as well...Were you at the 4-3 game at Old Trafford when the Celtic supporters were singing Keano for Celtic?

Over 100 in all.

Bar the Glasgow teams, all the teams in the SPL would struggle in the English 1st division.

Coen, I was over in Amsterdam for the Ajax game - and everyone we met held Larsson in the highest regard - as for some of the players currently at Celtic look where they were before Martin O 'Neil took over ...Didier Agathe was average now he's a great asset to Celtic...Stilian Petrov showed glimpses of class but under MON he's fucking brilliant. Petta was an average player for Ipswich...look at him now:nod: took the total piss out of Ajax...What can you say. It's all down to the 2nd Messiah Martin O Neil

Are Luton going straight back up then, Allen? You've had a few bad results recently.

We've lost 4 on the bounce, a bit gutting as I had 50 notes on us being Xmas No.1 in Division 3. We're still 2 points of second place, mind, so it's not all Doom & Gloom. To be honest, I'd expect us to go straight back up automatically. Hopefully we're just suffering a blip at the moment.

Plymouth are walking it a bit at the mo aren't they? Rochdale will sink down like they do every year. Good to see the Mighty Stags still up there though.

We get Plymouth fans polluting our website, much more than the W**ford ever used to. They'll sink too, mind. Hull are the ones to watch out for, I reckon; there's been a lot of money invested in that side.

A lot of money considering they couldn't afford to unlock their ground last year. I can't see Mansfield lasting the pace in the top 3 to be honest - too many young kids playing, but I think we've got every chance via the play-offs. Obviously dependant on whether CG stays til then that is.

Agree about Hull. I think Rochdale may actually do it this year. Did you know that they haven't been promoted for 37 years! Seb, the reason they fall off every year is that their pitch is frozen from Dec to Feb, and they have to play three games a week to catch up! (according to my Rochdale supporting boss, anyway) The Stags may get the third automatic place if they can keep hold of Greenacre, who always seems to have at least one scout watching him per game.

I wish Luton luck, Allen....it's grim in the third!! (plus it'll be an easy away game for me next season!)

Did you know Rochdale have a player who is 42 years old! Unbelievable. Tony Ford. I thought it was bad enough that they've got Richard Jobson, 38, but a 42 year old! Doubt that pair'll last the season, mind!

The reason Ford kept playing is coz he is Steve Parkins best mate. He did the same when they were at Mansfield - kept playing despite him not being good enough. Now Parkins pissed off to Barnsley and taken Fordy with him as his assistant. Can't imagine he'll play in the 1st division mind you.

At Brighton once, we had Steve Foster and Jimmy Case. A midfield partnership aged 83 years!! They do say that you can't put a price on experience.

Tony Ford still knows where the back of the net is, though!

Stanty being Phil Stant?

Jeez he used to play for us about 10 years ago, scored 35 in the season we last got promoted. A nutcase if I remember rightly - still held in very high esteem amongst the Stags fans.

The one and only :) He's not a nutcase ! He's a smashing bloke. All fans love him to bits if he's played for you - we even had Hereford fans paying to watch him play for us against Rushden last week. That's unheard of in local rivalry - they usually try to pull the fence down !

Phil Stant was brought in by Adams to "keep morale high in the dressing room" during the Championship run in. He scored once for us, with the worlds lowest header. About three inches off the ground I think. Him and Warren Aspinal had an account at the local bookies.

Is he still bleached blonde? Honestly, a man of his age....

Aspinal? He was a bit of a Boy in his time, wasn't he? I think Paul Dodd paints rather an interesting account of him in his book "England's No.1"! Another example of a fan who's got lucky and found his way onto the pitch!

'orrible man. What he lacked in talent he more than made up for with pure aggression. He used to drink (a lot) in my In-Law's pub during his Pompey days.

I think he has actually played for everone, at some point in his career. Had to retire last season due to injury. Last I heard he was doing a bit of scouting for us.

Yes it is :lol Honestly, he's a smashing guy. Plays for nothing, lives in Newark and travels down twice a week for training nights, trains 5 days with a league club (not sure who). Scored hat-trick a couple of weeks ago, 10 in 13 games ain't a bad record when you are 39 !
