How much did Gillian contribute to songwriting?

I wonder, how much did Gillian contribute to the songwritingof New Order. Cause it seems like Barney writes most of the music, thts the impression I get in interviews. Does Barney write the synth parts in NO songs or does Gillian come up with them?

Neither. Steve writes them, Gillian presses buttons to make them play whilst he's on the drums.

Joy Division used to have pretty much everyone contributing tunes, with Ian concentrating more on vocals and quality control. He was the chief song arranger apparently.

It changed as New Order, with Bernard becoming the melody man and main lyric writer. I've never got the impression that Gillian writes/wrote any of the music at all, though obviously she had an input to the finished sound before recording/playing. Steve wrote as many of the sequencer tracks as Bernard, and all of them do the programming involved.

...though I do remember Barney strongly hinting that Gillian wrote most of the music for WIM, and that at the time (ie - 1990) he thought this was "the way of the future" for the band.

Ironic, eh?

I always thought that comment was his sardonic sense of humour, their biggest commercial success in terms of chart placing being a novelty record.......

She must have contributed a lot to The Other Two's albums though. I presume she and Steve work together.

I think Gillian's contribution is vastly under-rated. Sure, she's no muso, but she does contribute ideas, and they can't play as well live without her.

I do remember the Dream Atack story as well. I know in '89 when Steve and Gillian were being interviewed on the radio they where talking about Gillian writing Dream Attack, they also talked about Just Like Heaven being a complete rip off that song as well, and how Robert Smith would never dare steal any of New Order's ideas. It was a pretty funny interview.

I believe it's 'All the Way' that borrows the bassline from 'Just Like Heaven'. You could also argue that the descending guitar riff in 'Just Like Heaven' rips off 'Leave Me Alone'.

I think it's The Cure that ripped off New Order, not the other way round, either way i don't care. When the Cure decided to incorporate New Order basslines they sounded much better. That's just my opinion.

I agree. I could be wrong but it always seemed to me that Mr. R. Smith was a bit more in tuned to the music of the day going on around him than Barney or the rest of NO, thus he would be in a much better position to absorb new sounds and influences into his songwriting.

But don't quote me on that. Only a theory I have.
