Dragged myself along to hear Tony Wilson's lecture in Edinburgh on Saturday. Say what you like but I've always found him quite entertaining. He was the last speaker at what was actually a pretty enjoyable afternoon. He was banginn on about his theory of the "13 Year Cycle" of revolutions in popular youth culture.
Anyhow, far more interesting was the video he brought along which had about fifteen minutes worth of footage of 24 Hour Party People... The Movie. It was alll very disjointed but i have to say it looks funny as fuck. Coogan is frighteningly good, the mannerisms, the delivery the arrogance all perfect, not just another Steeve Coogan character.
There was a sequence with the Monday's doing an early gig, again, so true to life everybody looked the part and the boy playing Bez had aa the moves down to tee.
The only bit with any NO characters was a tiny part with Barney in the studio behind the mixing desk for the Mondays first album. The boy didn't say anything but he certainly looked the part...blond streaks, dark blue Levi fitted denim jacket and white shirt a la Blue Monday TOTP performance.
All in all it looks like it's gonna be very funny.....look out for the Tony Wilson dream sequence where god appears to him in a dream...as Tony Wilson!
"You've done well Tony...Joy Division ; great, New Order :even better, Vinni Reilly ; due a comeback....but you really should have signed The Smiths."
No doubt funnier on screen than in print but you get the drift.
