Does anyone know if hooky is still going to be djing in Belfast at Lavery's on the 21st of Oct.. There was posters everywhere but now they've all been covered and there's nothing about it on the internet, plus the people at Lavery's are about as helpful as testicular cancer. Anyone know anything?
Hooky in Belfast?

Not seen anything about it. Let's hope that you/someone you love don't ever get cancer, shall we?
Bah! Why was I not informed....
During my exams and all, e.g. no way in hell anyway. Not that I'd like the concept of heading North, at night, in Autumn, close to Halloween, with an Irish registration plate, a Catholic name, etc....

Odd attitude from someone who I'm assuming is Irish! Been to Belfast loads (three times this year) and never encountered any problems. Used to go out with a girl from Limavady for years too so I've been about a good few places. I've felt in more danger dodging pissed up stag partys in Dublin than I ever have in Belfast. And the bars are ten times better!

Yes, I'm Irish. From a Catholic family (note, I'm not one) from Donegal. Hence I'm more wary about NI than someone who could get away with calling themselves "British" is.
I never feel in danger in Dublin. Lived here most of my life, so I'm used to it. But driving 200 miles, some it through "Bandit Country", in an Irish registered car, and then 200 miles back, late at night, back through Bandit Country, still in an Irish registered car.... Driving licence has my name (Cian), etc on it; police are still 85% Unionist.... Not worth it
Would go to an NO gig in, say, the Odyssey Arena, because I'd be able to fly or get the train up/back, and its in a well lit, well copped, mostly Catholic part of Belfast. Not to some pub I've never heard of that could be anywhere in the city, in the middle of Autumn.

The bit about feeling in "danger" in Dublin was a throwaway remark. Just don't really rate what I've seen of it which to be honest, aint much.
I'm a Catholic too and yeah I've felt uncomfortable in certain places, particularly Limavady with it's red white and blue kerbstones. But I would never let it put me off going there. It's a normal place with normal people going about their normal lives.
And the comment about the police isn't fair. 85% Unionist?!!! Is that a published statistic? Do they ask cops their political opinions now?!!
The ex's brother was in the RUC. Again, a normal bloke doin a normal job that his dad and his dad's dad did before him.
I sound like I work for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board here but honestly, I wouldn't let scary chat like MYOB's put anyone off going. It's a top place!
Well, its meant to be 50/50 since the PSNI started but they published figures showing how few Nationalists they'd got - I think 15% was it.
NI is a nice place - in summer and during the day. Ten days before Halloween, 15 before Bonfire night, and in a car with no yellow reg plate its not a nice place.
Yay! An opportunity to slag Belfast again.
Having spent three years of my life studying there, i can honestly say that i consider the city to be an overrated hole.
Hooky in laverys? Was this advertised? i seriously doubt it, Laverys NEVER has famous djs, unless shane horan counts (in joke here. Shane, if yer reading, can i have my joy division book back that i lent you nearly two years ago?). The only place i can think of that ever has famous indie type djs is that place on the ormeau raod, whose name escapes me at the moment.
Wouldnt surprise me though, sods law and all that.
Odyssey in a catholic area? Not really, its in a nobody area, out towards the airport. New Order in there?
Honestly, if New order were to play a gig there and sell 1000 tickets i would be surprised. Hardly anybody has heard of them, and you ask djs to play true faith and they look at you blankly.
Laverys is in a semi dodly place. The problem that belfast has is that the wonderful city council has decreed that everywhere be shut at a certain time. 21st is a thursday, everywhere shut ay 1pm (i know the Students union opens to 2, and maybe the M club, but they stop serving drink same tie as everyone else, wankers) so you have a load of pissed up Belfastys all thinking their invincible making complete twats of themselves in a very small space. Its not particulary welcoming.
geogrpahically speaking, laverys is in shaftsbury sqaure, again, neutral terrority. But a disgrace nonetheless. It is however, about 30 yeard from the donegall road, a strong loyalist area. And to be honest laverys has a bit of a reputation of being a loyalist bar. But not as much as it could to be honest.
No way in hell would you get me onto the Ormeau Road, even in broad daylight and with my original accent (which is "generic north of ireland").

Presumably I'd have to be damn careful where I park me Panda then?
NI is so damn complex. Have Hooky DJ in Dublin, where theres nowhere safe to park your car ![]()

"Pissed Belfastys" winding up students?!!! In their home town?!! How dare they....
The undercurrents of snoberry and elitism coming from Student Grant and BYOB are tragic! The worst thing about Belfast?....Same as the worst thing about Edinburgh and Stirling ; too many poncey English students!
**Hi there, some news for youYou may have already been told about this but Hooky is doing another DJ setin:Laverys BarBradbury PlaceBelfastNorthern Irelandon Thursday the 21st of October.I cannot find any info on the web about it but it has been advertised about Belfast. The city isn't very big so anyone wanting to go there should have no bother finding it.P/S:**12 Bradbury Place
I was actually referring to pissed up belfastys both student and non student winding up each other. Most of them are actually students on weeknights anyway...
All a moot point anyway as exams will stop me from going, but I don't think I can drive in NI anyway - my licence is "restricted" still - only had it a few weeks.
Hello! Longtime since I've been on this forum. That was me who sent the email to the webmaster by the way.
I'm actually from Belfast and it has been a long time since I've had any bother in the city, it just depends on where you go (avoid flags, murals, painted kerbstones etc). It's a hell of a lot safer than the majority of places in England, Scotland and in the south of Ireland so it should feel like a holiday for them! (well, slight exaggeration, there is BUGGAR ALL to do here).
I don't normally go to Laverys bar but I'll definitely be there on Thursday 21st for what should be a bloody good night - guaranteed good music and, if what I hear is true, £1 a pint! (I dare you Dubliners to find a pint at three times that price!)
Hopefully see some of you there if you can make it, just shout "BRADLEY YOU WANKER!" once you get to the bar (middle floor as far as I'm aware)

Just to let you know, it's actually £1 a "drink", meaning pints and red bull arent included and it's only before 11pm! scamming bastards! but of course, the drink isn't the only reason for going but I thought I'd let you all know just in case you start calling me a lying bastard ;)
roll on tomorrow night!
Considering that Hooky's DJIng here, and in the Shetlands, and in London, and in Wrexham, what we know of so far, when the fcuk is he actually doing anything on New Order?!

Perhaps he's out-and-about surveying the band's fanbase to find out exactly what we want from the new record after the, er, "furore" over Retro.
After all, it pays to give the punters what they want when said punters are paying your mortgage!!

Touche! Perhaps he really needs to pay off the hairdresser who does his highlights??? Or the massive credit card bill he must have racked up with his new-found alice-band fetish!!
I would love to go but:
- Im skint.
- Ive a pretty important & unmissable college presentation on at 5 tomorrow.
To be honest, im not so gone on a "DJ" set. Ill hold out for next april (fingers crossed)
I'd love to go, but i dont go to uni there no more.
To be honest, if the place is half full i'd be surprised. OF course, that would be better for everyone, good atmosphere, short waits at the bar, and more room for crazy crazy dancing...
I'd love to go too, but can't because I'll probably be doing boring uni work. Oh, the joys of being a student!
At least you don't have to worry about that any more, Liam!
They don't make students like they used to!
It's Oct-fucking-Tober and people are worrying about coursework and suchlike!
Heavens above!!!
Jarvo,
the problem is that everything these days is modular so that there is less of the traditional cramming and moslty based on coursework. means you have nothing to do leading up the exam period and loads all semester.
Well, after all that, Hooky didn't even turn up! Absolutely raging. If you were bothered enough to go up to the DJ he gave some excuse about Hooky being "stuck in Bristol airport" and said he'd be rescheduling. I was pretty wasted and the music being played was pretty good so it wasn't all bad. I'll let you know the details if he ever does decide to show his face, bastard!
BTW: A friend of mine got a black eye from some arsehole in Laverys and me and another friend almost got in a fight with a taxi driver, so perhaps all that Belfast-bashing wasn't exaggerated at all!!

Might be true, Grahame had to book Hooky a flight down to Brizzle from Glasgow after his set up there - he was going back to Bath to work on the album.

I went and got pissed in Maynooth instead, and convinced the pub DJ to play True Faith. So I had a more NO themed night then you ![]()

Well I suppose I'm glad it didn't happen, now we all "know" about it we can keep an eye open for the reschedule. Think I will offer him my copy of Community to sign, ironic or what, Hooky signing an album with ME playing his bassline :-)
As for Belfast bashing, it's like anywhere, put enough ppl with a low enough income and the combined woe of minute brains ( caused mainly by the parents' bloodstreams being a combination of Harp Lager, 1.99(GBP) Cider and Blue WKD from conception to birth) and you'll get spides[1]. Both sides have them in equal numbers, tho being a hun I know more of spidus orangus than spidus verdis. And therein lies my point, despite being of good (ahem) orange stock, with a Scots sounding name, and coming from a town where Catholics exist peacefully mainly on account of them being so few in number, and despite having eyes at least 9ft apart (Note: no one not from NI will get this, cept maybe Shug and some of his townsfolk, cos they all like the same games over there)....there is NO FUCKING WAY I'd go wandering round Belfast at night[2], PARTICULARLY the loyalist areas, I've seen these ones up close. We have them in the estates here, smaller in number and lesser in fuckwitthood (Dickheads are like plants or fish, they grow to the size of their environment). This is a social grouping who, to upset a rival social grouping, trash their own areas and infrastructure. "let's piss the fenians off by....BURNING DOWN THE CORNER SHOP MUUHUHUHUUHAHAHAHAHAHA", The reality that the nearest Catholic is safe in bed miles away, and really doesn't care if some retard has to walk an extra mile to get milk so his harpy wife can pacify their whining litter of spidelets.....just doesn't occur to them. I mean, people say Dubya is thick (Dubya IS thick), but even HE didn't tackle Bin Laden by bombing Iowa!!!. ( can you see perhaps why, I tend not to class myself among them, besides to be a prod means u need to be like religious....and I aint :) )
Lavery's is too damned close to Sandy row and the Donegal road, shaftsebury square is hilariously violent on a weekend. On a thursday tho, it will be solid students, and tho they may be a bunch of pompous English shoe-gazing wazzocks, they do not Glass people or pronouce "right" with 2 E's. Actually, on the subject of E's, they're good for exploring new towns. When you have the invincibility feeling thing happening, it almost becomes real, no one DOES piss about with you, if you just believe they wont, always good to have a "designated thinker" along in case things DO go tits up:) Good music does wonders too..... Me in Dublin.... Pre Orb, really freaked out, not wanting to go anywhere cept hotel and just stare at ceiling before gig, scared of being Northern etc etc. After 2 hours of Orb, I was out on the town and couldn't e stopped, with nothing more than guiness and a couple of smokes in me, didn't sleep a wink either. BTW, Dublin is a GREAT city, it's spides ( sorry I do not know the Irish for spide) seem few in number, but if reports are to be believed, a run in with them rarely ends well ( I know a guy who runs a club in Dublin and he told me not to come cos ppl got kicked to death down the road......maybe he just hates me :) ).
So....
I would certainly go to see the great Hook, if for no other reason than to say cheers for all the tunes. Let's face it, I'd risk life and limb to see New Order, so risking a kicking to see Hooky seems fair. Be nice to do our bit for cross comunity relations by all meetin up and gettin pissed too :-)
[1]Spide: noun: The Norn Iron localization of what is known in other parts as the "chav" "townie" or "ned". you may create one for study using this part of the interweb thingy http://homepage.ntlworld.com/no31online/spidegenerator.htm I'll make you a deal, if you've lived or spent time in Belfast, and DON'T lose the plot at that page, I'll buy u a pint next time yer over. More information on the spcies as a national phenomenon may be found here http://www.chavscum.co.uk/
[2] Unless: A: I am with ppl from the place who I know. B: It's 20 mins before we're due to play and the 9v battery that powers have the rig has died. C: I know precisely where I am, and where the nearest busy street is. D: I'm off my tits and past caring.
Well that was comprehensive Steve C,
Down here townies are 'Huddas' or more often these days just 'scumbags' pronounced scuuuuuumbaaaaa. . . Can be recognised by their greeting "storee bud" reply: "wakked ouro me bin"
Spides are also known as "steeks" (or "millies" if they're girls), for the benefit of our non-NI members.
Indeed, and despite repeated letters to the Prime Minister, you STILL wil not pe given a bounty for presenting their heads at the Post Office. Possibly my Fave spide story ever.... While trashing their own estate to annoy the "enemy", I seen one of them run at cops and fire brigade with a petrol bomb, which he proceeded to mess up the throwing of, and pour all down his own arm. I thought I couldn;t laugh any harder.....but then the Firedudes stepped forward to put him out, his mates bricked them. Thought I'd have a seizure I laughed so hard. Kept wondering what Darwin would say about it.
Some memorable spide quotes ( on walls). "don't march- mobize" "Rember 1960" ( the traditional rant of spidus orangus is "remember 1690"....kinda like the English and the WC1966....it's they last time they won anything and feel a compulsion to go on about it until they win something else). But my all time fave goes to the "other" side.....Some orange type had vaulted the peaceline ( read as:berlin wall) and found a HUGE republican mural...On it he had, written "remember 1690"...and underneath, the locals had written "yes, we want a rematch". Anyway, to those of you not from the area, don't take my ravings too seriously, Belfast is a lovely city, and most of it's people are lovely too, but DO make avoiding the dickheads a priority. Would be interested in hearing from anyone on the other side of the organge/green line, just to see if your morons are anything like as hilariously retarded as ours. Not that there IS a You and Us, I'm sure we're all just people, but there's meant to be some sort of divide apparently :-)...never seen the point of it myself.

Me neither, it's all bull as far as I'm concerned. Sorry if this sounds a bit hippy-ish but why can't we just get along?

Assuming you're on the orange side, with the surname and the "United Kingdom" location. I'm kinda on the other side - Irish Catholic from Donegal.
You can keep NI, BTW. I don't want it...
But yes, the nationalists can be as stupid. Particularly the vehement ones in West Donegal. Who tried to beat me up for wearing a Brighton shirt because it was blue. Light blue and white, that is. Just seemed too close to Rangers for their comfort, until they realised I was a 'local' (accent).
THe "UK address" thing is more to piss the English off, I work for the UK passport service, and get twats calling me a foreigner all the time :-) ( my usual line is "well if you HAD the passport you lost, you would see the bit about "UK of GB and NI" on the front")
BTW, no no, you can have NI, please. I insist.
Good to know tho, that we don't hold a monopoly on muppetts. That's a blinder, taking a brighton shirt for a rangers one. They actually banned "all sports wear" in my work, now obviously they did this cos of the whole Rangers/Celtic thing, because no one took my complaint about a cow orker wearing a Ferarri shirt very seriously ..DOH!.
They banned "all sportswear" in my old students union as well. I was kicked out once because my croata football shirt was obviously causing serious offence to someone with its hardcore socio-politcal nature. Of course, if you went in wearing a gaelic football shirt then it became a different matter.
We had the old sportstop in the union discussion a thousand times. I found it offensive due to its sheer pedanticness, then the QUB higher ups, changed it too football tops, excluing gaelic football tops! As a neutral, even though my grandad played for donegal GAA in the 50's and my cousin int he current Down Goalkeeper, i was really annoyed.
Of course, this pales into significance when someone complained about my Joy Divison t-shirt, due to its... yes! Nazi reference!
HOOKY IS BACK
Laverys AGAIN (sigh), Thursday 9th December
I might have to go on a mystery bus tour the night before so I'll try and arrive but I doubt I'll be taking full advantage of the 1£ a drink offer (which excludes pints and redbull, but you can still buy pint bottles for a quid, which is good but stupid).
Some guy outside Queen's union was handing out fliers for it and before I started laying into him about Hooky missing the last one, he promised that he had booked him an earlier flight and that he WILL be there. I was just coming from seeing Bloc Party, who were fantastic, so the prospect of finally seeing Hooky cheered me up even further, even though it means going back to frigging Laverys......
Remember, bring your ticket from last time (if you got one) and you'll get in free, and quite rightly so! Hope to see you all there (especially you Campbell! you need to get out of Bangor for a while, it's going to drive you insane!)
I wish everyone would stop being a wanker about this 'gig'. I was at "lavs" last time. OK, Hooky did'nt turn up. But when was the last time you danced (badly) for at least half an hour to the mancs finest?? Roll on 9th December!! By the way, went to see Bez last Thursday in Lavery's. He did'nt go near the decks, MC for the evening vvvvv interesting!
Woooooooohooo drinkin with the hookster. Of course it does depend on the state of his sore paw. Look I was only waxing lyrical, Belfast is NOT the set of deliverance ( they shot that in Conlig....Where Eddie Irvine comes from... :) ).
Get yer soft southern arses up here you pussies :-) Meet up with some of the NOOLers somewhere quiet and assault en mass if you're really worried. Personally I think we should all meet at Botanic station, or at very least all wear white carnations or something so we can spot our siblings. Incidently, winter is the best time to come to Belfast, as the dickhead elements only care about their causes when it's warm and dry :}
Anyone know if this is happening or not, based on his sore paw. typical, he pulls this shit when I am off work sick, so that A.) I am skinter than Tony Wilson they day London records realised he owned bugger all. and B. I can hardly walk to the crapper never mind to the railway station without collapsing in pain [1]. I suspect the time may come to send some mates armed with my copy of community and a sob story :-)
[1] fear not stout Nool siblings, it's nothing that's gonna result in me wearing pine or anything, just deeply inconvenient and very sore.

I wouldn't park my car in Ballymun overnight. I wouldn't park it on O'Connell Street (hypothetically) overnight. I'm most certainly not leaving it in a city where half the people are going to have some form of hatred for me because of the cars registration plate for any period of time at night. My tyres cost a lot of money...
I've been to Belfast. Its not a nice place for someone in an Irish registered car with an obviously middle class Southern Irish accent at night. Even if I removed the Donegal GAA sticker and the FAI sticker from the back window, I still wouldn't want to be driving around there
Hey, it might not be true. But NI has got a reputation, and its hard to lose that.

you're a fucking twat mate. get over yourself! i'm catholic, and am very comfortable going anywhere within my beautiful lil country. stay down there in your piss-ridden shithole of a city.

I'll be going to University in Ballymun, and I still wouldn't park there...
O'Connell Street at night is a bit dodgy, but yes, the clampers would have me within seconds. Fecking ControlPlus.
Did it happen?
I couldn't go owing to a combination of having 27p to my name and my joyful littlee medical condition deciding that this week would be a good time to imobilize me. bollox 2 it !
I've only felt scared in Belfast OR dublin, when faced by exactly the same people....retards who like to thump people. We got em up here, you got em down there. The accent changes, but the single neuron they possess still screams "fight" at them the whole time. As for Cars.....I woud have to admit that the car is a better target.....as the spides would KNOW it couldn't fight back ( it's always a worry when they only outmunmber a human victim 15-1). GAA stickers, southern plates and the FIA[1] IE stickers would defo be a red rag to a bull ( though why does anyone care about what browser you use :) ). But you can always park somewhere OTHER than loyalist fucktard central.....perhaps up at the uni....where there seem to be a large number of Southerners who surrvive quite well. Or an even better plan would have been to ask someone here from a green tinted area if it could be parked up near their place. Jeez yo coulda stuck it at my place, I'm only just outside BF and that kinda thing doesn;t happen here very much ( and besides, I have a gate :) )
Oh....Shelley....the reason everyone here can't all get along is 2 fold.....
- "our" leaders have no interest in brokering peace, big Ian and Gerry and all that pile of guff merchants would be on the dole if there were no "troubles".
- the paramilitaries do not give a monkeys balls for ideology, they are just mafia-style ( without the "stlye" part) gangs, and they co-operate at the highest levels, doing little hits for each other and making sure the right faction controls the drugs and whatever each area.
A little secret I once seen while doing some work in the BBC....they were setting up a 3 way feed from belfast london and dublin......while they were setting up the feed, the politicians were all asking about each other's wives, and "did you get the double glazin sorted", and basically you would have thought they were 3 very close friends. The "on air" light comes on.....and they are at each other's throats. The sad truth.....NI politics ( possibly politics everywhere), is now as real as WWF ( or WWE, or whatever they call it these days).

Ah yes - DCU, in my day (80's) they only churned out accountants so I winged me way over to UCD instead; would have been handy being able 2 walk to college in the mornings, cycling with a hangover is a pisser! - enjoy the copius alcahol consumption, its a good campus there now
Well said Darren, I'm a prod and am proud of our wee country as well. By the way, went to Lavery's (again) last night - No Peter Hook!! Sign said he will be coming in new year. I'm going to stalk him down, make him buy me a drink.. On positive side, got in for free using tickets from first 'gig', one pound a drink until 11, went to a deserted Limelight and met James Walsh, lead singer from Starsailor, top man!! Mark my words people of Ireland, Foo Fighters & Prodigy confirmed for Oxegen, I believe New Order will be playing Witnness. Hope to have a better time than Chillis gig, the kids did'nt get it!! I have no inside information, I just think it will make sense. ![]()

Wittness is gone, its now called Oxegen.
I know it is now Oxegen, as stated, but it will always be Witnness to me (only one t by the way if we're going to be picky). This is very childish....

I am laughing away here and I am sat in my EIRE top I picked up in New York last year. I remember Stevie C telling me he was a blue nose from the North, but it didnae stop me sending him a New Order vid![]()
And Liam, yer right, it is FAR TOO easy for everyone to get along. I hope the Hooky thing does go ahead and you's all meet up fer a Shandy or two!
Right, I'm aff tae Mancland to see The Saw Doctors and The Pogues. I look forward to some twat having a dig at me when I get back:p ![]()
Did I hear someone call for a twat?
Aye, I am indeed of heretic stock but it doesn't stop me cringing when I see paisley :-) I also actively enjoy Billie-bigot baiting more than most Catholics ( probably due to the ability to infiltrate more easily), my 2 fave 11th night hobbies ( in my youth, before learning that sitting inside with the doors locked is the best bet)..... You approach a bonfire....
- Find a retard ( this will not be hard, unless you suffer from an inability to see wood for trees....and Yes Shug, they do all have rangers tops on, just like you were picturing). Then tell him King Billie was any combination of the following.....Catholic, Sent by the Pope, Gay, A dwarf, A total dweeb who needed to be lifted onto his horse. or
- Find one playing a fyfe and ask him why his band is called a "flute band" when in fact they all play fyfes and picollos, explain at great length that a flute is about 3 feet long, made of silver, sounds PLEASANT, and needs more than Harp lager and religious bigottry to play.
Comfortable running shoes are a great idea, as is dark clothing, so they can;t see you cos of their Boney-blindness.
PS Shug, still think i owe you for that, and what would Uncle Ian think if I went to my grave owin somethin to a Fenia.....:)

You seemed to be suggesting it was two different festivals though...
I like that thing about the flute, Steve... must remember it next time I see a 12th bonfire
I've got a friends called William born on the 12th of July. He's Catholic.....
Hmmm interesting debate. I've been out of the city at uni in scotland for last few years and got a bit more perspective on it now. I've never felt in any particular danger in Belfast as long as you don't go wandering off into dodgy areas on your own. In the centre of the city and particularly on the 'golden mile' I guess it can be advisable to not draw attention to yourself at closing time but no more so than in anyother city I've been out in-Glasgow's lot worse in my experience. It's certainly a lot worse down in provincial Northern Ireland (Newtownards) where friday night is fight night in the centre of town although on the flip side again during my time spent in Dundee I only say 2 scuffles-not bad for 4 years of looning around the city at all hours of the day. In short I don't think Belfast is anythgin to fear particularly-just take the precautions you would in any other strange city and you'll be fine barring some really bad luck.
Also...yay for Hooky coming in the enw year. missed the gig in dec cos I had no-one to go with. all new order loving friends have left for the mainland. Def gonna make the return gig though. And Shane Horan? Mr RAG? hehe oh you know me! Still got your copy of Powder somewhere.![]()
Shane Horan? Mr RAG? one day maybe. Does he post on here? If so, can i have my From Joy Division to New Order book back? Cheers.
Wont say in a public forum what Shane did to get himself banished from rag.
