Hooky in Belfast?

Does anyone know if hooky is still going to be djing in Belfast at Lavery's on the 21st of Oct.. There was posters everywhere but now they've all been covered and there's nothing about it on the internet, plus the people at Lavery's are about as helpful as testicular cancer. Anyone know anything?

Not seen anything about it. Let's hope that you/someone you love don't ever get cancer, shall we?

During my exams and all, e.g. no way in hell anyway. Not that I'd like the concept of heading North, at night, in Autumn, close to Halloween, with an Irish registration plate, a Catholic name, etc....

Odd attitude from someone who I'm assuming is Irish! Been to Belfast loads (three times this year) and never encountered any problems. Used to go out with a girl from Limavady for years too so I've been about a good few places. I've felt in more danger dodging pissed up stag partys in Dublin than I ever have in Belfast. And the bars are ten times better!

Yes, I'm Irish. From a Catholic family (note, I'm not one) from Donegal. Hence I'm more wary about NI than someone who could get away with calling themselves "British" is.

I never feel in danger in Dublin. Lived here most of my life, so I'm used to it. But driving 200 miles, some it through "Bandit Country", in an Irish registered car, and then 200 miles back, late at night, back through Bandit Country, still in an Irish registered car.... Driving licence has my name (Cian), etc on it; police are still 85% Unionist.... Not worth it

Would go to an NO gig in, say, the Odyssey Arena, because I'd be able to fly or get the train up/back, and its in a well lit, well copped, mostly Catholic part of Belfast. Not to some pub I've never heard of that could be anywhere in the city, in the middle of Autumn.

The bit about feeling in "danger" in Dublin was a throwaway remark. Just don't really rate what I've seen of it which to be honest, aint much.

I'm a Catholic too and yeah I've felt uncomfortable in certain places, particularly Limavady with it's red white and blue kerbstones. But I would never let it put me off going there. It's a normal place with normal people going about their normal lives.

And the comment about the police isn't fair. 85% Unionist?!!! Is that a published statistic? Do they ask cops their political opinions now?!!

The ex's brother was in the RUC. Again, a normal bloke doin a normal job that his dad and his dad's dad did before him.

I sound like I work for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board here but honestly, I wouldn't let scary chat like MYOB's put anyone off going. It's a top place!

Well, its meant to be 50/50 since the PSNI started but they published figures showing how few Nationalists they'd got - I think 15% was it.

NI is a nice place - in summer and during the day. Ten days before Halloween, 15 before Bonfire night, and in a car with no yellow reg plate its not a nice place.

Having spent three years of my life studying there, i can honestly say that i consider the city to be an overrated hole.

Hooky in laverys? Was this advertised? i seriously doubt it, Laverys NEVER has famous djs, unless shane horan counts (in joke here. Shane, if yer reading, can i have my joy division book back that i lent you nearly two years ago?). The only place i can think of that ever has famous indie type djs is that place on the ormeau raod, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Wouldnt surprise me though, sods law and all that.

Honestly, if New order were to play a gig there and sell 1000 tickets i would be surprised. Hardly anybody has heard of them, and you ask djs to play true faith and they look at you blankly.

Laverys is in a semi dodly place. The problem that belfast has is that the wonderful city council has decreed that everywhere be shut at a certain time. 21st is a thursday, everywhere shut ay 1pm (i know the Students union opens to 2, and maybe the M club, but they stop serving drink same tie as everyone else, wankers) so you have a load of pissed up Belfastys all thinking their invincible making complete twats of themselves in a very small space. Its not particulary welcoming.

geogrpahically speaking, laverys is in shaftsbury sqaure, again, neutral terrority. But a disgrace nonetheless. It is however, about 30 yeard from the donegall road, a strong loyalist area. And to be honest laverys has a bit of a reputation of being a loyalist bar. But not as much as it could to be honest.

No way in hell would you get me onto the Ormeau Road, even in broad daylight and with my original accent (which is "generic north of ireland").

The undercurrents of snoberry and elitism coming from Student Grant and BYOB are tragic! The worst thing about Belfast?....Same as the worst thing about Edinburgh and Stirling ; too many poncey English students!

I was actually referring to pissed up belfastys both student and non student winding up each other. Most of them are actually students on weeknights anyway...

All a moot point anyway as exams will stop me from going, but I don't think I can drive in NI anyway - my licence is "restricted" still - only had it a few weeks.

Hello! Longtime since I've been on this forum. That was me who sent the email to the webmaster by the way.

I'm actually from Belfast and it has been a long time since I've had any bother in the city, it just depends on where you go (avoid flags, murals, painted kerbstones etc). It's a hell of a lot safer than the majority of places in England, Scotland and in the south of Ireland so it should feel like a holiday for them! (well, slight exaggeration, there is BUGGAR ALL to do here).

I don't normally go to Laverys bar but I'll definitely be there on Thursday 21st for what should be a bloody good night - guaranteed good music and, if what I hear is true, £1 a pint! (I dare you Dubliners to find a pint at three times that price!)

Hopefully see some of you there if you can make it, just shout "BRADLEY YOU WANKER!" once you get to the bar (middle floor as far as I'm aware)

Just to let you know, it's actually £1 a "drink", meaning pints and red bull arent included and it's only before 11pm! scamming bastards! but of course, the drink isn't the only reason for going but I thought I'd let you all know just in case you start calling me a lying bastard ;)

To be honest, if the place is half full i'd be surprised. OF course, that would be better for everyone, good atmosphere, short waits at the bar, and more room for crazy crazy dancing...

the problem is that everything these days is modular so that there is less of the traditional cramming and moslty based on coursework. means you have nothing to do leading up the exam period and loads all semester.
