Do we really want New Order to play Glastonbury?

Okay, so I'd 'try' and get a ticket, but what a shite choice for a Festival this summer, if it goes ahead. People attend for the 'event' these days, and the muzak is secondary. It's in the middle of nowhere and it's nigh on impossible to get into. And I hate cunts called Tarquin 'slumming it' for the weekend in mummy's camper-van.

Absolutely: 10 years ago it'd have been fine, but today barely any of us would get tickets and the Order would be wasted on the Jeremys and Jemimas of this world.

It'd be nice to think that the band and their management would put the fans first and avoid Glastonbury like the plague. It's an undignified and deeply undemocratic festival these days, and I'm too old for that camping shit.

I'll buy a ticket if it happens and they shaft the hardcore by playing somewhere we can't readily get to, but fucked if I'm camping. Can always flog the ticket to a student on E-bay for several week's grant money. Will be pulling out all the stops to get some roadie work or some other way in though if needs be!

Fookin terrible idea (But it would bring the group a lot of media attention and maybe some new fans)

Not a hope in hell of getting a ticket though, it was bad enough last year according to Mike and Liam. There's no way I am gonna be on a phoneline for 23 hours (like Mike)

So the chance of having a proper "hardcore" group of fans down the front is zero.

Reading, V, T in the Park would be a lot better. Hopefully someone is on the case.

Last I read they were going to put microchips in the tickets this year to make each one unique and usable only by the individual purchasing it - precisely to avoid the ebay fleecing that's gone on over the last few years....

I'll have to try and get Digital on the bill then. Our guestlist could be a who's who of the NOOL hardcore!

Agree with the Doc man. I've done my stint in a tent. I couldn't see the bands management listening to the fans though.

In fairness to them, it does get 'em MASSIVE exposure, what with every burp and fart being televised nowadays. It's still bollocks to the average punter, mind. Course, I'd fucking go, if I could.

7-0 to the no's at the moment though! :thumb:

No fcucking way man, I would have to think about crossing the street to see them never mind all that camping in a mud pit with the dregs of society and their dog. (no offence)

Feck that. I'm too fond of my home comforts to be up to my knees in mud for 3-4 days. Would possibly consider going for the day to see 'em, though its a lot of money. How much is it for tickets about £100?

Glasto - No. Oxegen - Yes. Real festival, LOTS of tickets.

No one-day tickets at Glastonbury: you pay for the full shebang or you don't go. :nonono:

Are you nuts  load of pissed paddy caseys may do it for you, but not me.

oxegen is a load of shite.

Id be up for some euro gigs, were they to play Sonar in Barcelona, id be there. Glastonbury seems like a load of old cac at this stage, although I know a lad who was there last summer, and is still wearing his wristband.

Now that Coachella thing in California - that'd be good.

I personally would like them to... but:

It would be just like morrissey last year. The NME seem to by hyping this album up, so that means a high profile slot on the pyramid stage, probably in front of 50000 people waiting for headline band X, maybe Jean Michel Jarre, who has apparently confirmed himself to play. This might not be too bad, but they could be playing in front of a young headline band, who are there for the kids, like outkast (if kylie doesnt play) and that means playing in front of so many thousand people waiting for outkast. So all these kids would know the intro to regret, wouldnt be able to make out the mess that is blue monday live, and some might know Love Will Tear Us apart.

So band get annoyed, or more likely start taking the mick and phoning it in, and getting bad press and so on and sor forth.

Either way, I wouldn't be attending, so I don't care for that (besides, if they do play Glastonbury, it doesn't mean they wouldn't play elsewhere too, so I don't quite see what the problem is -- unless you are aiming to attend every gig New Order will ever make!).

SO I VOTED YES.

Because of the exposure it would give them. Glastonbury is not only televised in Europe, it is now also broadcasted on specialised music television in North America, like MTV, MuchMusic or Musique Plus.

New Order needs the exposure badly.

More exposure = more sales, more tours maybe???, etc....

Maybe a few years ago, but not now. They are nearly 50 years old, they don't need to tour anywhere, so Glastonbury wouldn't have the same promotional boost for them at this stage in their careers as it would for some younger bands.

Voted yes cos the more they play live the better they get.

Hopefully they'll play at old trafford again, they always play best at home.

Too true Jed, let's have a replay at Old Trafford. Preferably with a 'homegrown' starting line-up like 2002.

Glastonbury is easily the best festival.Have any of the moaners on this thread ever been? I've been to the last 3 and the only muddy one was 2004. New Order have headlined twice before so why would they now be demoted to a support slot? It's the perfect festival for them and if you don't get a ticket you haven't tried hard enough. :D

What if it is muddy ? It's all about the experience, if there is a band on you like it is a bonus . I have been to Glastonbury 17 times and pray to fcuk i get a ticket for this years, New Order or no New Order.

QED - middle of nowhere... I'd go - mainly to review New Order - I would only go in for New Order though, not bothered about the rest of the bands that might/would be playing. As for Reading - my girlfriend has a flat there - I could go along for New Order's performance then leave. I used to go to alot of the festivals, but not so bothered any more.

Reading 93, I remember lying half-in, half-out of the tent, having a smoke at 08:30 in the morning, a couple of beers beside me and wondering why I could hear 'Regret' being sound checked...

Don't think I'll be doing that again - I'm not quite as old as the band, but I'm getting there. Now if I could wander through with a press pass, then fine. It would give me a chance to have a few beers, chat, enjoy the gig and possibly get an interview or a few quotes for NOOL at least! :thumb:

I think the best bet would be for New Order to do another Finsbury Park gig - highly enjoyable and New Order blew eveyone else off the stage...

Yes. I've been three times. But not since 1994.

Point is, New Order are doing this for maximum exposure, getting their message across to, well, basically 'new' fans and not their own fanbase. Why should people who follow New Order have to fork out 150notes(is it?) for a ticket for a gig in a field in the middle of fcuking nowhere. Personally, given the choice, I'd rather see them do a few NewOrderonly gigs the length and breadth of the country rather than a one-off with 100,000 people who actually don't really give a sh1te about their muzak.

YES - Why not ! the best band in the world playing at the best festival in the world. If I go this Year it will be my 8th time! I would love to sit in a field pissed out of my head on cider listening to NO. HEAVEN:thumb:

Yes, yes, yes.:nod::nod::nod:

Been going since '83. I'm lucky enough to work there, so I'm almost guaranteed a ticket.

It's, quite simply the best festival going, with or without NO (or any named bands for that matter).

Funny how you lot know so much about the demographics of the people/weather/conditions without going!

This thing about only rich kiddies getting in is just you lot talking bollocks. Do their high paid parents have extra special computers that jump the queue for the tickets? I think not.

The only people I hear slagging off Glastonbury are the ones that didn't get a ticket. (oh! there's nobody i want to see anyway) after dialling in for hours.

As Al says, you know if you got a ticket, you'd all be the first at the gate come Wednesday morning.

This message board is filling up with moaning old sad bastards who know nothing about new music - see the thread John Peel FF thread where someone admitted to only knowing eight bands in the list.:nonono:

I went '92-'95, and there was a marked difference in the demographic over that period alone. Plus it's simply too big - the last time I went put me off 'cos the crowds were ridiculous. And as for "rich kiddies": at £100-plus for a ticket I'd say you'd have to be a pretty rich (say) 17 year old to be able to afford it, especially when you take into consideration all the other costs involved. And it's easy to be complacent about the Order doing Glastonbury when your lucky enough to be "almost guaranteed a ticket". The rest of us mere plebs who'd be willing to fork out for New Order alone probably won't get one, and that's why the popular vote is overwhelmingly towards the "no" side of the equation.

The bastards'll still probably do it, mind.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the JP thread was on the Falls site. However the sentiment remains the same - Q. How many people here go to see new bands live or even listen to shows such as John Peel's?

Reading Festival is for masochistic people who can't think for themselves. They like to be told what to do & when to do it: To queue up & leave the stage compound stage & go back to their tents by 11:30. It reminds them of the end of play time.

Glastonbury (on plonkers call it glasto) has never been totally about the music. It's always been about the 'event' as a whole. Only sad people who have never been & only watch it from their safe, snug little armchairs in nice save tree-lined suburban semi-d's wouldn't know that.

I haven't been since 1987, have personally never enjoyed Glastonbury, but I guess my attitude towards the prospect of having to go now to see the Order is down to the fact that I would not be physically capable of standing up for 8 hours, let alone three days at the place.

The demographic changed over that period only because that's when the TV coverage started!!.

I've never understood the 'it's to big, crowds were unbearable' argument. All the festivals have about the same number of people per hectare. (I think there's a public entertainments license document which has the rules). Wether it's Glastonbury or say the Big Chill, the distance between people is roughly the same. Having said that, the illegal fence jumpers in '2000 did cause a bit of a squeeze.

I'm not complacent - I'm very excited. At the prospect of NO playing anywhere.

The reason The Pilton Pop festival sells out is because it's incredibly popular because Michael & Emily Eavis organise a fantastic show. That is not a valid reason to criticise it.

Sad old moaning bastard here, I did only recognise 8 bands in the FF when PJ Harvey and the Delgados were counted twice. Not moaning about it, I'll stick to what I like and let you do the same. In any case in the days of yore when I was listening to Peel, I didn't like half the stuff he played, and I hadn't heard of a lot of the bands but most people didn't and that was the point wasn't it?

Another who went to Glastonbury '87 and no other. The weather hardly made it a good advert. Julian Cope was on immediately before New Order.

This goes out to Davey Boy Fox, if you can get me into Glasnost I will STOP moaning.

Fair enough? Cos I certainly ain't gonna take a day off work to sit on a phone line / internet site all day to get a ticket.

Dave - I certainly agree about the TV changing the demographic, and I'd go as far as to say that putting the festival on the telly was what killed it in many people's eyes - it simply became too big for it's own good, with demand outstripping supply to the extent that every year now there's the annual "Glastonbury ticket lottery".

I'm sure the festival is great for the lucky ones who circumnavigate the telephone/online scrum, but I preferred it when you could check the forecast and pick up a ticket as late as a week before the show. But perhaps I am just a miserable old bastard.... :D

Glastonbury is nothing but hype these days-people will buy tickets just to say "im going to glastonbury". They wont even care who is on the bill, which isnt any better than any other festival. I`ve only been twice admittedly, but i went to see Radiohead (97 and 03) and it wasnt cos its the all conquering mighty Glastonbury. If the play a multi artist show this year,i hope its for a good cause and isnt full of dickheads.

Once again, why do most people on this thread approach Glastonbury as if it were to be the very last gig they'd ever do?

And do you really have to attend EVERY FRIGGIN' SHOW they make? :confused2:

Originally posted by Revenge Of The Clone Once again, why do most people on this thread approach Glastonbury as if it were to be the very last gig they'd ever do?And do you really have to attend EVERY FRIGGIN' SHOW they make? :confused2:

Quite simply, most of us complaining about Glastonbury have fond recollections of watching New Order in small or medium sized indoor venues, these are the sort of venues that suit them best, and we much prefer these to the open air venues. The sound is better indoors (at least when the venue isn't a barn).

The thing with attending as many gigs as possible is that it isn't just a live performance by a favourite band, it's a social event, like going the pub before the football and meeting up with your mates. The social aspect is what makes it all the more worthwhile, and this site has galvanized so much of that. The likes of Al, JG, Hibster, Jim Thomas, Mike, Shug and all these have all being going to the same gigs for so many years, and we certainly wouldn't have all met without this site.

Plus one thing to remember - this ain't gonna go on forever, these may be their live swansong, so catch 'em while you can.

I understand your point and it's a valid one without a doubt.

I'm just saying that just because they play Glastonbury, it doesn't mean you won't be able to have these small venues concerts as well.

I'm for both of them!

But it does mean just that! Bernard hates playing live, and they won't be doing many live shows, that much is for certain. They only ever did big tours because they had big tax bills, and they don't now!

Most people have had their say on what they'd like to happen on the live front, and I would like nothing better than several gigs all over the world. The facts are though that it won't happen. There may be a couple of London dates, maybe a Manchester one and a Glasgow one (or two possibly), plus Glastonbury or Reading in the UK, and in the States there may be just something like Coachella or an Area One type thing. That'll be about all.

The capacity at Glastonbury and the publicity it gets makes great business sense. It also negates the necessity of a lengthy tour as you have already reached x amount of punters. Old Monkey summed it up it may be their live swansong and certainly in England it is just as much about the anticipation and the social side of things as it is about the gigs. I look forward to finally meeting some of the legends on here, get pissed and get battered and bruised down the front. New Order at Glastonbury '87 for me was a great gig but even if I could get a ticket now I don't think the punters that would be there would be conducive to a good show. Give small indoor venues where you don't have to worry about the weather until after the fact.

Originally posted by John Sludden The Public Entertainment Licence was approved last night,so when do they confirm the line up?

That's the moot point, they don't always confirm the line-up till AFTER tickets go on sale. Think Prince was rumoured for 2/3 years ago, and then was never confirmed.

As Mr Fox said earlier, it's about the 'event' and not the muzak. Hmmm.

They also annouced that there will be no glastonbury next year (2006) so i'd imagine this years tickets will be even harder to get hold of.

That's the impression I got when I posted my previous comment.I think New Order themselves would say it's incredibly sad if you had no interest in anything else going on at Glastonbury besides their set. John Peel was the only radio presenter to play Joy Division on national radio in '79 and kept his enthusiasm for the rest of his life.He would have loved to see New Order at Glastonbury again. A day spent checking out new bands in the Peel tent followed by a New Order headline set is an unbeatable way to pass the time. And it's a far better setting than some rain sodden park in the middle of rip off city, a.k.a. London. :p
