Is Temptation on 316 the very first version?

Hi everyone.

Ive beeen checking out this sight for about two years but i just never signed up. I got the 316 DVD two weeks ago and i was just wondering if that was the first time Temptation was played. I dont know why but i love that version.:)

Hi Marine and welcome (or is that "hello Sailor"?)

The Taras version is a very early one, but not the first live airing - according to this site's song history, Temptation was first performed at Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki on Sep 06, 1981 - about 2 months prior to the Taras/316 version. Hope that helps CTB

Clicking on the "Live" tab and investigating "Concert Browser" for 1981 I counted Temptation played 6 times prior to Taras. HOWEVER, the first two times were instrumentals AND two gigs have no track listings.

SO it could be the fourth time with lyrics. As with many New Order songs, Temptation was forged live. Live development of songs often involves evolving lyrics, Like at Taras.

Be grateful that NO gave us such a wonderful gift on that VHS (original release of Taras). It is my favorite version of that song.

Now if they would release RFH 84 on dvd...

Yeh as with so many order songs in the past, I would not actually call this a version, but a work in progress. Back in the olden days they developed songs live before they recorded them. I think it may have been played a couple of times before that Taras gig.

Somehow I can never get tired of Temptation. There have been some great ones over the years to compliment the Taras performance. The segues with EGG and 586 were good, but my favourite would have to be the one from Rock Around The Clock at the BBC.

Yes, there had been six previous documented performances, plus possibly two others. None of them were strictly instrumentals, Bernard would mumble some bits here and there, but there was no structure to either the lyrics or the points at which they were introduced to the song at each rendition.

You could also use the Song Live History page where is specifies the first time each New Order song were played live.... :D

Even though the database is still fucked, so all the stats etc are wrong. It still misses out nearly every Procession!

The version on Taras Shevchenko is the exact type of thing that makes me love NewOrder. Much better than the more recent renditions.

Thanks! Now ive had to get my Taras video out to have another look - great version that - barney looks so p-ed off. Anyone know, after the first 'verse' (people need people like me/you/me) he looks like he pulls away from the mic quickly - did he get a shock or something?

Heres a weird one - I left the Taras video playing while i posted the last reply - when I went back to the TV there was another video playing - taras was recorded over another ICON video. Only the last 2-3 minutes of this survives - its a 'weird glam rock' type band - who after the gig do a 'down memory lane' dublinish song. Yeah, he got shocked. Look how he jumped back and spread his arms out. Then he looks both left and right as if he wants to kill someone. Finally he steps back to the mic and taps it a few times before singing, just to check to see if it is still "hot."

Great energy and rawness about Taras. Love the menacing way Temptation starts before those dreamy synths come in (the intro lost something in later versions imo). And then, some ten minutes later, the band leave the stage with the 'instruments still playing'. :D

Did they plan on leaving then? It looks to me that they had some serious instrument trouble. Steve for one clearly lost his drum amplfication.

It seemed a bit disorganized to say the least, with each member leaving at different times (Bernard I think left a good minute before the others!)

Perhaps that was the origin of Blue Monday--walk off the stage and let the instruments entertain the crowd?

That impressed the Americans I think

That was their way of saying - "your not getting an encore, we're off home, you can listen to this if you want to"

Thanks - i think you're right - one of them looks like Gavin Friday. You'd think id know my neighbours!:( I can see now why the prunes didnt make it big
