Bollocks. Soon as I get a sniff of a copy it's going to everyone I personally know from here. Cos I know they'll be buying it on the day of its release anyways. And I would HOPE they'd do the same for me!!!
You got a copy then Nic?! Is that what you're a-tellin' us?! ![]()
Where is this interview? Anyway I understand what Hooky says, though he expressed it confusedly, especially when you think he's not against bootlegs at all and he's his first self-bootleger.
He meant this: "If our album gets on P2P networks before the release date, being that now many people have DSL connection and can download an entire album in 10 minutes, the most of the people who'll download it and are not proper fans won't spend the money to get the same songs on the legal CD. And Warners will be very angry"
I can only reply this: "Hooky, of course you're absolutely right. I know how it works and indeed the most of the people behave like you say. Myself, to not be tempted to do the same to other artists, I usually download just a couple of songs to taste the album and if I like them I try to buy it, or just keep the songs without downloading the others, unless the album is very rare or too expensive or hard to find and I've already bought more important CDs. I'm sure that NO NEW ORDER FAN would ever SHARE THE WHOLE ALBUM ON P2P NETWORKS. They wouldn't be fans at all, giving the songs to people who care so little about them... they only would share to trusted fellow fans who'll buy the record as soon as it's released. Myself I'm not even interested. I'm happy I've heard Krafty, I could hear one more song just to hear something different, for example if it's a dance track, but I don't need it and I can wait the day of release to buy the CD for the other songs, so they'll be new on my CD player while I admire a new sleeve by the GOD (God Of Designers) Peter Saville... By the way, dear Hooky, you can say to WARNERS that they should change their name to WANKERS because they could at least put the album on I Tunes for paid legal download, so people who want to hear it before the release can get it there and you get some royalties too... Top bass on Krafty, man! Oh, and please keep Sarge away from me at the next aftershow party ;) Cheers Yours as ever, ANewOrderFan

Twas the same with the Get Ready album, can't remember who sent me the pre-mix, but it didn't stop me getting the album on it's first day of release. So far I've not heard of anyone with the album. I wouldn't be against the idea of sharing to people I know that will buy it, problem is, will they do the same or not? :D
Problem is P2P, not sharing among fans IMHO.
No I haven't got it... I'm supposed to have a Krafty promo in the mail though... so the album promo isn't ready, otherwise I'd get it too (I suppose)

Just for the record, I got a Get Ready promo at least 4 weeks AFTER I got Get Ready on the net... ;)
But we all know that the album will leak anyway...
I don't think New Order needs a promotional push from Media Giant Time Warner. The fan base is loyal and big enough to promote it...
I will purchase the album on CD and Vinyl when it comes out.
I was jamming Failuresthis morning on my way into work. It was Friday and I had a great coffee buzz. Try it!![]()
I just want to hear the bloody album in its entirety, no matter when it's available. Of course, I'll buy it once it's released, so no reason for anyone to crap theirselves over it.
This is the biggest bit of the interview: "Anyway, my big problem has always been what to do when the band isn't working. The first singer dies and the next singer won't play live."
The reason they don't make more cash is because they don't tour enough, and that's how bands make the majority of their money. Sure, NO doesn't need to tour as much anymore since they're wealthy buggers, but their fanbase would be much more rabid if they'd sucked up to the Americans and the press more like The Cure or U2.
Still having problems with my C30 C60 C90 GO! :D

If I get a copy, Ill send it on to as many people as possible. If the music is good, peoplw will buy the album for the better quality audio, and attend more gigs.
Good music sells well, gets onto radio, and into peoples heads. The album WILL be on p2p when its released, and the “non fans” or casual downloaders wont have heard of it, or care eitherways until then. From now until release, its only sad fucks like us who will actively seek it out, as was said before, most hardcore fans will buy it anyhow, unless its truly awful.
Id have a problem downloading Durutti Column / Fall albums that are already released. NewOrder are a huge band, and not exactly on the breadline. Don’t be a fool, if you get it, spread it ![]()
I'll be on the lookout for one at the next record fair that i'll be going to at the end of March..

i agree with you. copying music has been around for ages and, at least in my experience, it only serves to get more people to buy a band's music. i probably won't download the album (i'm not savvy about finding these things, anyway), and even if i did it certainly wouldn't stop me from purchasing a legal copy!
To this day I still haven't figured out why record companies don't take more advantage of the opportunity presented by "core" fans of bands.
I know that I would be willing to pay an extra $20-30 (or even a bit higher) on top of the normal price for the album for a special "pre-release" version of the album that had a few extra unreleased tracks/mixes. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one.
They could release the album in physical format (cd) and ship it out 1 month before the album hit the streets. Most of the core fans that had made the investment would be reluctant to share with non core fans...and the core fans would want to own the genuine item.
If they wanted to release it digitally then they could also watermark the files to contain a signature that would be traceable to whomever had uploaded it out to the rest of the world and make that person culpable.
Also, the core fans are the ones with the most to lose if their favorite artists can't make a living and would likely help to "self police" the free exchange of the prerelease.
The prerelease would only be available for a short period of time and only to those who had prepaid/subscribed.
They make us buy two or three versions of singles anyway...why not do this as well?

you should forward your idea to Warner. I think that would work very well, and give them an extra profit. But don't forget to put a copyright on that idea.

Jeez, this is the absolute opposite of most music fan sentiment the world over. Countless online forums and letters to music journals the world over are flooded with fans complaining of how they're taken to the cleaners by the record companies.
The hardcore fanbase buys the album on release only for the limited edition with extra tracks to appear six months later, then the tour edition appears, multiple formats, different international variants, etc, etc. Most hardcore fans are complaining that their loyalty is being raped by the majors.

The labels don't want sales of the album trickling in over time. They have a defined release date so the album makes an impact on the charts.

bit hypocritical that!!!!!!!!!!
Just a note to whoever uploaded the lp. The promos released so far are all encoded with a digital id, so whoever you are, the bands management & label will find out who you are. They are aware it is out there & not particularly happy.

*cough*bull*cough*
Me arse they have digital ID's on them. Unless they've developed a way of storing coding data *in the audio*, anything else in the bitstream would be stripped by reencoding to MP3.
Also, after agressive encoding, particularly VBR MP3 encoding with psychoacoustics, the chances of an in-audio tag being readable are close to nil.

And I do hope they find the person who leaked it, seriously!
I'm happy to have it, I can't wait to buy it, but it's a bit sad this happened so early actually.
On my side, I'll do all I can to avoid a massive "can you please send me" riot on this website.
BTW, welcome aboard!
As with 'Get ready' any advance issue of the album I get will be used to review it for this site.
Every now and then I get promos from bands publicity companies and I'd never 'leak' them on the web. Main reason that I wouldn't want to scupper the publicity/promotional plans - but also that I don't have the wherewithall to do it!
If people really want to get hold of the single or album before release date, there are plenty of independant record shops that have them - my local one has oops... HAD 3 copies of Krafty for sale last week
each one at a fiver...
Even if I get a promo copy of the album, I'll still buy the official release - in fact I've pre-ordered it from a record shop (record shop? My god, I'm old...)
I'll also buy the vinyl version and all available mixes of the singles as usual.
Perhaps I should get 'MUG' tattooed across my forehead, but I don't want to miss out on completing my collection.
As for Nic - he's right - he won't leak stuff - okay, he MAY get a promo or two because of this site, but it's a responsible attitude NOT to encourage activities that will reduce the chances of sales.
That's not hypocritical, it's responsible - as I said, if anyone really wants a promo they can find one quite easily!

Well, they are doing this already... that's the point of limited editions.
Hardcore fans will always be the first in line to get the new product, so I doubt people not really knowning New Order got the limited edition of Retro...
But I doubt there will be a limited edition, although a DVD would be very nice of course.
And some artists like Interpol and The Cure have special internet sections where you can get special material with the CD key... too bad they don't have a real site, isn't it? ;)

Thats something you THREATEN to use. The implanting and decoding technology costs a lot more than the piracy *actually* loses them - saying it loses them a sale per download is crap, they'll lose a sale per 100 downloads at max.
Also, claiming that watermarks like that are both invunerable to psychoacoustics and not able to be removed is crap also. Remember Apple claimed that FairPlay couldn't be stripped from its iTunes tracks, at all? And it took only months for there to be apps that 100% sucesfully remove it.
All I can tell you is that the leak IS under investigation... so I don't see how they could investigate if there is no watermark on the promos.
If Razormaid can do it, I don't see why Warner can't.
A bit of Black Marker around the barcode on the inside (silvered) ring stops the "encoding".
Record companies and bands take note:
Make good tunes +Play lots of gigs =Money
Bad tunes +Lawyers +shit "encoding" +scare stories to fans =No Money
Time the record industry stopped blaming poor sales on kids with computers/mp3s radios/audio tapes and started looking at the amount of pure drudge they use to take kids pocket money.
I think you're getting the trick to defeat Sony's Copy Protection confused with this
As a software engineer, I can tell you that *ANYTHING* that is done with software can be either replicated or undone with software. A digital watermarker is software, almost certainly.
Microsoft thought that their API was 'safe'. Look at the total DOS replacements and the WINE Windows emulation layer.
Apple thought iTunes DRM was safe, that Quicktime 5+ video was safe. HYMN and FFMpeg put paid to that
If Warner are watermarking CD's, believe me there'll be watermark removers pretty soon. Its a case of finding the mark and just dumping it and using cdparanoia-esque psycho techniques to rebuild the audio. If you saw the physical state of my copy of Get Ready and compared it to the sound quality that cdparanoia got out of it, you'd be surprised at how good SLY still sounds - the track was almost physically taken off the disk by me sitting on it in a pair of angry-teenager jeans with lots of metal protrusions...

Nope. Has to run through the scanners to count as a sale.
And it has to be a networked store for it to actually count.

Ooops sorry, I thought the discussion was about "can watermarks survive mp3 encoding?" and not "can watermarks be removed?". :-/ Well, apparently you believe now that it can survive encoding. Good.
So, can watermarks be removed? I wouldn't say that it can never be removed. Joe Hack is pretty smart. But you can't compare a watermark to an mp3 (or aac track in the Apple-case) that is basically wrapped in a copyprotected shell.
You can remove the shell and obtain the audiofile. Watermarks are a different story. A watermark is more embedded into the bitstream, or the audio itself if you so wish. Have you ever tried to remove just a single instrument in a track? That's not very easy at all - close to impossible without severly chaning the tonal structure of the music. Especially with more complicated music - soundwise.
Will quality be degraded with watermarks? I'm not able to discuss that since my hearing is not up to par. But who can honestly hear the difference between a track that has a bitrate of 192kbps and a track with a bitrate of 195kbps (all other encoding parameter set the same)? Those extra 3kbps could be used for a watermark. 3072 bits per second is a shitload of bits if you want to add simple information (like a watermark, or unique number) to a track...
And I do believe that the labels will use it - not to track over-the-counter sold albums, but to hunt down the persons who leak promotional copies. The movie-studios will definetly use it. And they may very well enforce manufacturers of video recording devices to have a chip blocking recording something with that watermark. I.e., you may not even be able to copy a movie by filming the TV screen...

There was a case with the new Prince album (IIRC) in the US a couple of years back where some "sales"-top-lists based their information on sold albums (in the stores), and some on shipped albums (to the stores)... Well, Prince's label shipped a load of albums to the stores and went #1 (or something like that), but it didn't sell nearly that well... :)

Thats why the have to pass through the scanners now. In Europe at least.
The last thing you described above about TV recording - it exists. Has done for YEARS. Its called Macrovision. A small leech that sits on the SCART or coaxial lead will detect and dump all the Macrovision flags if need be though - took a few years to kill it but kill it they did.
Macrovision had a nasty bite back - as well as recorders that recognised the marks refusing to record it, it could seriously confuse those that didn't recognise it and create bolloxed recordings due to where the marks were stored - the VBI...
If you've got the Pet Shop Boys PopArt DVD you can actually see the original Macrovision checkmarks across the top of the screen in one of the versions of Opportunities (the second, US release I think). They were visible when the tapes were played back on some kit.

No, I didn't mean Macrovision, more like the watermark scheme existing today (see this link) but with a real-time decoder chip in every recording device denying recording of a watermarked movie (kind of like the SCMS used for DAT tapes).
Yes, some geek will find out how to bypass the chip/functionality (and I will be the first one to buy a bypassed recorder), but it will hinder widescale pirating. The labels/studios aren't concerned about us techno-freaks who will go the extra mile to download something, they are worried when the pirate-technology gets so easy to use and mainstream that the moms&pops around the world can and will use it...
