Where is this interview? Anyway I understand what Hooky says, though he expressed it confusedly, especially when you think he's not against bootlegs at all and he's his first self-bootleger.

He meant this: "If our album gets on P2P networks before the release date, being that now many people have DSL connection and can download an entire album in 10 minutes, the most of the people who'll download it and are not proper fans won't spend the money to get the same songs on the legal CD. And Warners will be very angry"

I can only reply this: "Hooky, of course you're absolutely right. I know how it works and indeed the most of the people behave like you say. Myself, to not be tempted to do the same to other artists, I usually download just a couple of songs to taste the album and if I like them I try to buy it, or just keep the songs without downloading the others, unless the album is very rare or too expensive or hard to find and I've already bought more important CDs. I'm sure that NO NEW ORDER FAN would ever SHARE THE WHOLE ALBUM ON P2P NETWORKS. They wouldn't be fans at all, giving the songs to people who care so little about them... they only would share to trusted fellow fans who'll buy the record as soon as it's released. Myself I'm not even interested. I'm happy I've heard Krafty, I could hear one more song just to hear something different, for example if it's a dance track, but I don't need it and I can wait the day of release to buy the CD for the other songs, so they'll be new on my CD player while I admire a new sleeve by the GOD (God Of Designers) Peter Saville... By the way, dear Hooky, you can say to WARNERS that they should change their name to WANKERS because they could at least put the album on I Tunes for paid legal download, so people who want to hear it before the release can get it there and you get some royalties too... I don't think New Order needs a promotional push from Media Giant Time Warner. The fan base is loyal and big enough to promote it...

I will purchase the album on CD and Vinyl when it comes out.

I just want to hear the bloody album in its entirety, no matter when it's available. Of course, I'll buy it once it's released, so no reason for anyone to crap theirselves over it.

The reason they don't make more cash is because they don't tour enough, and that's how bands make the majority of their money. Sure, NO doesn't need to tour as much anymore since they're wealthy buggers, but their fanbase would be much more rabid if they'd sucked up to the Americans and the press more like The Cure or U2.

How many great tapes got chewed from your collection then? (But at least bootlegging was SO much easier then!!!)

If I get a copy, Ill send it on to as many people as possible. If the music is good, peoplw will buy the album for the better quality audio, and attend more gigs.

Good music sells well, gets onto radio, and into peoples heads. The album WILL be on p2p when its released, and the “non fans” or casual downloaders wont have heard of it, or care eitherways until then. From now until release, its only sad fucks like us who will actively seek it out, as was said before, most hardcore fans will buy it anyhow, unless its truly awful.

Id have a problem downloading Durutti Column / Fall albums that are already released. NewOrder are a huge band, and not exactly on the breadline. Don’t be a fool, if you get it, spread it

I'll be on the lookout for one at the next record fair that i'll be going to at the end of March..

i agree with you. copying music has been around for ages and, at least in my experience, it only serves to get more people to buy a band's music. i probably won't download the album (i'm not savvy about finding these things, anyway), and even if i did it certainly wouldn't stop me from purchasing a legal copy!

To this day I still haven't figured out why record companies don't take more advantage of the opportunity presented by "core" fans of bands.

I know that I would be willing to pay an extra $20-30 (or even a bit higher) on top of the normal price for the album for a special "pre-release" version of the album that had a few extra unreleased tracks/mixes. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one.

They could release the album in physical format (cd) and ship it out 1 month before the album hit the streets. Most of the core fans that had made the investment would be reluctant to share with non core fans...and the core fans would want to own the genuine item.

If they wanted to release it digitally then they could also watermark the files to contain a signature that would be traceable to whomever had uploaded it out to the rest of the world and make that person culpable.

Also, the core fans are the ones with the most to lose if their favorite artists can't make a living and would likely help to "self police" the free exchange of the prerelease.

The prerelease would only be available for a short period of time and only to those who had prepaid/subscribed.

They make us buy two or three versions of singles anyway...why not do this as well?

you should forward your idea to Warner. I think that would work very well, and give them an extra profit. But don't forget to put a copyright on that idea.

Jeez, this is the absolute opposite of most music fan sentiment the world over. Countless online forums and letters to music journals the world over are flooded with fans complaining of how they're taken to the cleaners by the record companies.

The hardcore fanbase buys the album on release only for the limited edition with extra tracks to appear six months later, then the tour edition appears, multiple formats, different international variants, etc, etc. Most hardcore fans are complaining that their loyalty is being raped by the majors.

Just a note to whoever uploaded the lp. The promos released so far are all encoded with a digital id, so whoever you are, the bands management & label will find out who you are. They are aware it is out there & not particularly happy.

Me arse they have digital ID's on them. Unless they've developed a way of storing coding data *in the audio*, anything else in the bitstream would be stripped by reencoding to MP3.

Also, after agressive encoding, particularly VBR MP3 encoding with psychoacoustics, the chances of an in-audio tag being readable are close to nil.
