That looks like something that's been done on paint and taken about five minutes - I hope this is just a promo cover.
It'd fit in with the Krafty promo, if and only if its the prom of the album.
It has the band name on it, it can't be the album ![]()
Well they got the apostrophe right and that's a relief.
However the font doesn't match the Avant-Garde style of the Krafty promo/retail releases. Which is atypical of Saville.
:\pimp3:
Legit I guess, it's from Warner...
However, I'm hugely disappointed!!!
I understand Saville had no time, but that is... UGLY... I hate orange!
it is eyecatching
sort of post-post punk... deconstructing the art to the simplist form. or maybe its a promo cover like the krafty single has a simple promo cover
it should just have the No on the cover with no band name... it's like it has the bands name twice
or maybe Saville is saying "waiting for the sirens' call is the actual title... ? WTF is up with that!! "
this is beyond minimalism! Next album we'll have to it ourselves
But then again, i like orange:D

I doubt it would be a promo, they never put the Krafty promo artwork online...
So far, Warner Germany never failed to give the right material...
The sleeve itself is crying out its feeling in text upon seeing itself in the reflection of its jewelcase.
what would be better if the cover has the pic of band, or has a cop siren lights flashing or is hologrammed.
I have to admit, I love it.
I'm really confused as to why Krafty's and WFTSC's fonts are different, though...
How much does Saville get paid to do one of these? Not that this is bad, but does anyone here think they couldn't do at least as well as this?
I kind of like it. This will really stand out and draw some attention at the record stores. And I think its simplicity reminds me somewhat of Substance. ![]()
I also agree that they should not have spelled out New order.
Kind of redundant.

Look at the cover of Substance. Not much there, but its a classic. ![]()

I have Krafty's promo just in front of me.. the fonts are the EXACT SAME.
Just that you only have 2 caps on the promo, so you have to check with the lower case letters.
To proove my point:

Only difference, the album font is BOLD.
I bet it's embossed like Krafty's promo...
"It's the NO Show!"
Um...Saville has created a post-post-postmodern/minimalist masterpiece. Translation: IT'S CRAP!
Even the Krafty cover is better than that. I sure how that's just a promo cover, because I mean....man.
This from the guy who brought us such revolutionary covers as a bowl of flowers and some floppy disks.
Still, it's a bit better than the cover of Substance. ![]()
Oh my!! i bet this isn't the final artwork for the cover, I don't think NO/Saville would miscalculate and have a design this sparse. They need an aesthecially pleasing cover to capture more of an audience. Substance was different and could get away with it since it was a greatest hits album and at that point already built a fan base. This is a rebound album from the lifeless "Get Ready" effort and the design should be stronger and more eye catching then just letters of NO on the damn cover!!
We must face the possibility that there may never be another neon strobed Mannequin de Pis-adellica.
its very eye catching, and he should have left the full band name off the front cover... then everybody would stop when they see it, pick it up and say "WTF is this?"
whether that is a positive response or a negative response, thats a matter of opinion. it is attention getting.
i can see how many will be left scratching their heads
but i kinda like it
the original Substance (New Order one) was very balanced, classy simple dignity, classic font, and, well, orderly. this cover is the exact opposite in ways... bold, unbalanced, a modern font, higher case following it's own rules.
from what has been said before and with the "Krafty" cover, I thought he was going to follow sort of a "traveling" theme.... since the traveling theme is present in a number of songs, maybe the sirens' call calling or whatever... guess that was a bad call![]()
maybe they could have a remix album... black with a big "On" on the front, make them a matched set![]()
I think it's pretty amazing, myself. It would be near perfect if they took the title and band name off it completely and just left the "No".
Looks a little negative to me, some people might pick it up thinking about buying it read the cover and say "No" and put it back down, now if the cover had "BUY ME, BUY ME, BUY ME" on the cover, that may improve sales!!
A slight improvement on the sub culture cover![]()

You're all right about the bands name not being on there.
Spotnik, I can't remember: Did the finished Get Ready Artwork first appear on the German Warners site?

I think you are wrong here Nick;
The black and white (Krafty) typeface is "Avant Garde"
The Orange and White (WFTSC) typeface is probably Helvetica (and looks like a "lightweight" one too)
Im not too sure yet. At least it doesnt look like "Krafty". Its more like the Get Ready covers than the Substance covers in my opinion.
It is a surprise anyhow, which is a good start. Give it a week or so. I dont think we can really say what it will look like until the actual album comes out. At the moment, its just a 150x150 jpeg. ![]()
p.s. I like the PSB covers.
Can't recall who mentioned it, but I read in this forum that the album artwork is of a plane taking off in blurred black and white effect - similar style to the Krafty single - with band name and album title centred on the back of the sleeve, a la Technique.
So I would say this is deffo a promo - Warner Germany edition only p'raps?
It is very minimalist - something we may not be so accustomed to from Mr. Saville, however, my personal belief is that it is not what it outside, but what is inside that counts...

The first place who got the artwork was the french ecommerce site FNAC... but the German Warner site got all promotional pictures first.. and I think International too, don't know for Retro... and Krafty.

That was the bootleg... so of course nothing official.
Would it be funny that the label would be using us so bootleggers would use that cover and find them out? ![]()
I would really like to see how much he got paid for that?
I still say Retro is worse, but this is second worst. But it does have a nice font for new order.
But the important thing is its a great cd. and I love it!

Retro? It's nice... why don't you like it?
Eagle + Disco Ball... hehe, too bad Thieves Like Us isn't on it ;)
Movement and Substance?
This is a little too Joy Division, don't you think? It's not 1981 anymore.
True Faith single was my fav, along with Republic and PLC. New Order artwork has always been best when it is minimalistic with a flair of heart and soul.
the sleeve art does'nt matter at all, pretentious peter saville just does anything, and takes his oversized cheque, and laughs his bollocks off![]()
Too simple, too minimalist... but Substance is simple and minimalist too, and it´s a classic. I really don´t know if I really liked or disliked it.
It seems to be official. http://images.warner.de/images-artists/WEA/New\_Order/573964/1027673.jpg And in my opinion the worst artwork for New Order album ever.

I hate to say it, but if that's the true cover (still hoping it's just a promo) it sucks. It's easily Saville's worst ever, it doesn't make sense (Though it may look like a chemical formula and orange on white can be cool but add something for fooksake, there's plenty of house white label 12"s like that).
It's a shame after the fantastic cover for Krafty, almost like if he couldn't be arsed to make another effort... I still hope it's not the final cover because it's so different to Krafty and in the last 20 years or so all the first singles had a look somehow related to the design of the album (especially Get Ready and Republic).
But wait! Didn't some New Order member that Saville asked wheter the apostrophe should have been placed before or after the "s" and they couldn't decide so they didn't place any??! How comes this artwork has one?!!
The forum's going crazy, seems like we're all here slowing it down! ;)
i always thought the International artwork was a rip-off of this:
ihttp://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00005KKC5.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Good design is about what you leave out as much as what you put in.
Don’t rush to judgement!
Wait, I've just heard the story behind this artwork: Saville had just made a white cover (after all The Beatles' White Album is one of his favourite artworks) with just the name of the band and the title written on it, like you can see at the top of the actual cover. Hooky entered the studio and asked: "Oi, but can't you add something below the fookin title?" And Saville was annoyed at him not understanding his minimalistic gesture and answered on the very cover by drawing a big "No"
[do i need to say i'm kiddin?)
for me it´s more "oh, fook it! i don´t want to do this anymore" than "oh, what can i do? i don´t have enough time". either way it´s crap. any of us can open Word, put Avant Garde and type No in orange. really, it doesn´t seem like an artistic decision of Saville. it´s more like a lack of ideas if you ask me! ![]()
I actually quite like it. But then again I've always had a penchant for the sheer boldness of post modernism. It's all a subjective thing, I hated the Krafty artwork but I like this. Odd, eh?
It actually reminds me a bit of the Haçienda / 24HPP artwork. It's very.. Factory, don't you think?
I believe Subculture was actually designed to be shit because Peter Saville boycotted - he fucking hated the single remix of the song. Or so I heard, anyway.
Wasn`t there some mention of the album cover being another blurred picture like Krafty but this time with a jet airliner taking off????![]()
i´m thinking out loud here. what if this image is rotated and the title we see on top is actually on the left. i mean, look at the image rotating 90 degrees counter-clockwise. does it have more sense now? ![]()

gad... has Saville heard the album? I know back at the ICA Wilson said that Saville was upset with NO. And there is the difference. New Order = NO No = no!
even the Krafty cover dont look great.
I think it is exellent. Nobody else has cover art like this thatI can think of so it will stand out. It seems a lot of people are saying that it isn't any good. To me it seemed to have the typical New Order sense of humour to it and it is different from stuff they've done before. It's cover art, to catch people's attention, not the lost Van Gogh collection. Lots of naysayers on this site as far as New Order's new stuff(music, artwork, etc) is concerned. I'm worried New Order might be progressing to the future without their hardcore fans.
Still it's too minimalistic for my taste.
But let's wait to see the full thing.. Substance had inner artwork...
So who knows!
However I admit this looks like a promo sleeve more than the real deal... so I'm still not sure this is it... because I don't see the link with Krafty.
It looks blatently like a promo sleeve, very PSB indeed.
But must an album cover have a picture on to be good? I dont think so.
Lets remember Grrrrready, a flat red line. No big deal.
The recent PET SHOP BOYS covers have been SUPERB.As for this i think it is a PROMO.Reminds me of GET THE MESSAGE single covers aswell.I would like a nice picture on the front cover of my CD.Might have to make my own!![]()
Im betting that the original sleeve featured some kind of sea/beach/wave type scene and the events in Asia on Boxing day called for a hasty rethink.
The title track is about the sea and stuff, Barney wrote some of it on his yacht and is well known for likeing sailing, so I reckon a nautical theme was on the cards until those tragic events occurred.
I think it's awful, very counterproductive in the marketing sense too, it'll be yelling "NO ! Don't pick me !" to everyone who passes by. The airplane version would have been a better idea, if yachts are out of the question (am I the only one here slightly annoyed by the yachting thing ?).

Just looks like a bolshy answer: "get ready" "No"
If this is the cover people will start using 'No' as the album name (like So or Go)
Works well with the NewOrder attitude to everything![]()

Or actually not fine, not working at all (perhaps it's on a yacht ?). It just doesn't look right to me, Barney among all those stinking rich people and their yachts, parked in marinas, last year on Hvar a bloke had a yacht so big that it had a helipad and an actual helicopter on it. Sipping 100 kuna (10 pounds) coctails. Wearing designer labels I havent heard of. I have an uneasy feeling about people with yachts. No offense to anyone who owns a yacht.

I'm glad, I think the general public response/interest will be posative. I still say New Order's harshest critics are on this very site.
Back to '88 for Sav. (or whomever put finger to mouse).
Top drawer sirs - echoes of Low-Life. When you've done it all, you have to fill in the gaps that were missed. It was only a matter of timepieces that 'No' or 'NO' was itself the artwork.
Genius, as always.
As Al points out, if the inner sleeve isn't an accent of the front i.e. the fulfilment of orange, then several people will be consuming their hats in surprise - AJ starting first.

I think the cover is great. Saville dared doing something not obvious to the first eye. That's the spirit of his best work!
The only thing scaring me is whether it will send a subliminal message to the buyer NOT to buy the album ("NO").
Originally posted by Spotnick Confirmation... the sleeve is real, by Warner.
Good and bad.
I don't mind the design itself, I'm a fan of minimalist design and typography. I wonder if I'm reading too much into it by suggesting that New Order is written NEW order to emphasise the fact that there is a NEW order - a new line-up within the band.
The thing that bothers me is how the design theme has been interrupted. The font, content and style of the Krafty single are unrelated to the album cover. This breaks all Saville's New Order traditions and being a stickler for detail, this bothers me. Which motif will the next single follow? The album or Krafty?
If the original design for the album was, as Al mentioned, a coastal setting or airplane in the same blurry monochrome style as Krafty, why did it change? If it's because of the recent tsunami (as rumoured), then this is political correctness gone mad for mine.

Slow down there chief, we heard you the first time.
There will be correlation, its just that we can't see it yet.
When toast was first invented, did anybody query why jam was being applied? ... think about it.
We haven’t seen the likes of this since the heady days of Shellshape and State of the Nutcracker back in the 80’s. I for one am extremely excited, blurry ferry or not.

krafty artwork also confirmed.
I'm still fighting my point that is IS the same font, but what do I know ;)
I used to love New Order's artwork, but Get Ready was simply crap and this is even worse. Anyone with more than 5 minutes' worth of experience on a Fisher Price art package could have 'designed' that. Where's the creativity, the mystique, the skill? In all seriousness, that cover must have taken no more than 30 seconds to do, including printing. Saville should be totally ashamed of himself, and no amount of attaching meaning to stark minimilism will change my view. Let's hope the music makes up for it.
Now now, calm down dear, design isn't so much about skill as it is about fulfilling a purpose, and it isn't so much about the process (how well qualified you have to be) - it's the ultimate product that's all important. If you want to do it on your criteria - making a piece of art which will keep the fans happy - then you're never going to win, because everyone has wildly different tastes in art. However, as far as eye-catching goes, or different, or whatever, this is a winner. Everyone's so obsessed with making a piece of art on their covers it's sick, and we've come to expect it haven't we? About 30 years ago I think we would have been pretty content with just a picture of the band on the front..
I mean, yes, it's a little annoying that Saville has probably walked away with a massive cheque for doing next to bugger all, but there's a bit of value's worth out of it - if anybody else apart from Saville had proposed it, would you think they would have been taken seriously?
I must confess that I've loved the covers as of late (I like the clean, no nonsense style), so maybe it sways my opinion, but a fact remains - it's eyecatching, it's distinctive, and it's different. Perfect.
i've pieced together several points by other keen observers to make sense of the cover. if you accept the look of the No as a nod to the periodic table of elements, you begin to realize it's classic Saville magic. newOrder are OLD and an essential ELEMENT to modern music. the artist/album title in the top left corner may very well be printed on the jewel case or a clear sticker. this is key to my appreciation of the sleeve so i'm hoping they don't print that on the front.
my newOrder sleeve preferences:
Technique era Shellshock Low-Life (full tracing paper) Movement Temptation 7" Temptation 12"
least favorite theme: REPUBLIC + Singles

I guess I can see the reference to the periodic table - but I'd never have seen it had it not been pointed out. How many people will 'get it', and of those who do, who would really think it clever?
well imho most new order covers have been somewhat understated, artistic, and very clean in design. This however, is far to clean. I hope this is a promo, but I am not entirely comforted by the last two covers for republic and get ready, which in my opinion are the worst of the lot.
We can all agree that it's the music that counts not the artwork but since Saville has been a staple behind New Order's music, isn't this a bit absurd to use No on the cover.
I love minimal art and the clarity of a simple abstract artwork like Piet Mondrian, it brings a certain freshness and order to it but how can anyone take this cover seriously.
The color orange is good and it defies the composition by placing it in the middle with text on upper left, but wrong choice in the elemental design of a stupid No letters.
I want to like it, I liked the early NO covers with similar style but this is off the mark. Well, on to the music....
why does the suppossed amount of money paid to Saville and estimated time of work have to do with anything?
unless somebody has inside info to the contrary, you should assume that Saville takes his over 26 year long association with the band seriously, at least from a design perspective. i don't know how he gets along personally with the guys, but the idea that he is just ripping off the band for cash is kind of a lame way to look at it IMO.
i bet by the end of the year some of you will be wearing white T-shirts with nothing but a big orange "No" on the front, confounding those around you.
For those curious about Saville's inspiration: http://www.cameco.com/common/images/u101/periodic.gif
I would seriously hope this isn't the final sleeve! PS, the (excellent) sleeve for Krafty; am I the only one who wonders if Mr Saville must've played 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk recently? Wouldn't be the first time he shows his, ahem 'influences'!
Well, at least it will stick out like a sore thumb at the CD racks and (sniff-sniff) fewer LP vinyl racks....
It does sort of jump out at you...No
The music is all we gotta worry about now...Parts of Get Ready were a bit flat, but considering out mates had not been together in a studio for about a decade, I figured it out be a bit of a shakedown cruise (to continue the nautical theme).
Originally posted by DaveyMcDave It actually reminds me a bit of the Haçienda / 24HPP artwork. It's very.. Factory, don't you think?
*Not at all. I just think he wanted to tribute his two all time favourite artworks:
Kraftwerk's Autobhan = New Order's Krafty The Beatles' White Album = New Order's Waiting For The Sirens Call
This should be flattering for New Order but it doesn't change the fact it looks awful just like the original White Album was nothing special really... I mean, put just an italic "o" on a white sleeve and I'm the first to appreciate minimalism... but a huge Helvetica "No"? I wonder what New Order think of this artwork. I hope they're still in time to change it. An artwork like this can mean some loss of sales, just like some people got interested in New Order after seeing the covers of Movement or Technique in record shops, others would never buy a record with such a plain sleeve... I guess if this was the cover of Technique it wouldn't have sold so well...
Spotnick: yes, Avant Garde and Helvetica are very similar, as they are both very open sans serif typefonts....
Avant Garde however is a bit more curvy and open... note the widths of the letters and the extensions (the 'r' for instance in order....) -
to us geeky designers, Saville has broken a cardinal rule of design, one that he in fact supported, to always use ONE type font (one sans, one sans serif) - amateur designers are always given away by their use of several different fonts on one piece....
regarding the lp cover: I love it. Comments about the subliminal effect of 'no' as negative towards a purchase or a further perusal are silly. If anything, as several have noted, the cover, much like prior NO covers, is more likely to inspire curiosity in the nonfan...
I picked up Lowlife in the shop back in 1985 because it was so strange looking. I had to check it out. If I were 16 again and had never heard of NO, I would most likely be interested in this odd sleeve.
Blood sweat and tears has nothing to do with good design.
Check amount has nothing to do with good design.
The question of a designer is typically: Does the art supplement, introduce, or describe the contents?
Saville has succeeded again. This lp will be different than anything near it in the bins. It will be highly visible across a record store floor. But it is not obnoxious.
Plus, an lp cover has a much different purpose than it did in the 1980s. It is for smaller cds and more importantly for online sales and should be clear even in small online sale jpgs. Cover art has new intentions. It is no longer about a foot by foot sleeve in a bin that you can touch...
I admire Saville for trailblazing lp art from 1979 to 2005... another Republic or Technique would make many folks here at NOOL happy, but would be redundant and anachronistic.
Originally posted by Pogue Mahone gad... has Saville heard the album? I know back at the ICA Wilson said that Saville was upset with NO.
*And why?
And there is the difference. New Order = NO No = no!
*That's the only nice idea of the sleeve, but he just explains it all by writing "NEW" and "order"... it'd have been cooler if the name of the band would have written less obviously, like all capital or something, so people would have wondere why "No" and not "NO"... The problem of this sleeve is the concept is alright, but it's how it looks that's, I'm afraid, crap. Had he used another font and different colours it could be still alright, but this is too plain... and I bet he did it on purpose... he wanted us all to say "I can do it myself on Word", so he can reply "Yes, but I HAVE made it, you could have made it, but you haven't. I HAVE." Great concept, as I was saying. But still looks crap!
Originally posted by Spotnick Confirmation... the sleeve is real, by Warner.
*Did you tell them they should hurry up and change it? I know it's Saville, but I don't want them to blame just file sharing when those CDs with a big "No" on the cover will stay in the shelves while kids pass by because they think that's the kind of sleeve only stupid bands can have (though I'm sure the most of New Order's sales today are made of long time fans even if there've been some converts for Get Ready)... I've heard quite some negative comments about this artwork. It's true that it will be visible everywhere, but that's hardly been the point in true artworks, especially for Saville, right? And if it sucks, it's no good it's so visible. It's like entering a record store and seeing a big sign saying "THIS RECORD SLEEVE SUCKS. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANNA BUY THE ALBUM?" ;) Still, I understand it's not easy to reject Saville's artwork, even for Warners. It's hard for me to write about this, because I've always been Saville's fan, but it's just because I love his true artworks I can't love this, and I'm just sorry if New Order relase such a wonderful album with such a sleeve... UNLESS the cover is, like, transparent, and there's something below that, or the CD case is different... for example you may remember the excellent artwork for Pet Shop Boys' Bilingual, looked plain on print, but once you had the CD in your hands you saw it was wonderful...

Hey almanso. how are you? I just did a similar picture as you two days ago to use with my profile but I don't know how the upload picture thing doesn't work! Am I the only that can't have a picture for my profile here?

Agreed, it was a decent cover.
*Waits for Digital Mike to shout at us for owning PSB albums*
To be honest, I still have a little part of me that believe that this is Warner's answer to bootleggers.. when they'll release the album, it will have a normal sleeve.
Tiny part, but still there... because I still don't see why it's that way. Could be used for the promo, sure, but c'mon... even Substance looks more classy.

by classy, you mean Substance looks very boring?
But substance has the least badly aged artwork of all of NO's stuff, in my opinion...
BTW Nic, this WYSIWYG editor is rankly horrible.... I'm going back to the normal one. I like to be able to see the text input carat, etc...

thank you for that example. Now I know Saville could have done a sleeve much worse than the actual cover.
Is Lucian Costelloe around?
Whats the "inside line" from Saville. Personally, I wasnt too sure at first, but like it now. I also think the "NEWorder WFTSC" should stay in the top right hand corner.
The text is definetly Helvetica Light. Not Avant Garde. The Capital N of avant garde is sharp at the corners.
Absolutely brilliant. Along with TECHNIQUE and CLOSER, the best LP cover Saville has ever done.
