WFTSC cover artwork revealed?

I would seriously hope this isn't the final sleeve! PS, the (excellent) sleeve for Krafty; am I the only one who wonders if Mr Saville must've played 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk recently? Wouldn't be the first time he shows his, ahem 'influences'!

Well, at least it will stick out like a sore thumb at the CD racks and (sniff-sniff) fewer LP vinyl racks....

The music is all we gotta worry about now...Parts of Get Ready were a bit flat, but considering out mates had not been together in a studio for about a decade, I figured it out be a bit of a shakedown cruise (to continue the nautical theme).

*Not at all. I just think he wanted to tribute his two all time favourite artworks:

Kraftwerk's Autobhan = New Order's Krafty The Beatles' White Album = New Order's Waiting For The Sirens Call

This should be flattering for New Order but it doesn't change the fact it looks awful just like the original White Album was nothing special really... I mean, put just an italic "o" on a white sleeve and I'm the first to appreciate minimalism... but a huge Helvetica "No"? I wonder what New Order think of this artwork. I hope they're still in time to change it. An artwork like this can mean some loss of sales, just like some people got interested in New Order after seeing the covers of Movement or Technique in record shops, others would never buy a record with such a plain sleeve... I guess if this was the cover of Technique it wouldn't have sold so well...

Spotnick: yes, Avant Garde and Helvetica are very similar, as they are both very open sans serif typefonts....

Avant Garde however is a bit more curvy and open... note the widths of the letters and the extensions (the 'r' for instance in order....) -

to us geeky designers, Saville has broken a cardinal rule of design, one that he in fact supported, to always use ONE type font (one sans, one sans serif) - amateur designers are always given away by their use of several different fonts on one piece....

regarding the lp cover: I love it. Comments about the subliminal effect of 'no' as negative towards a purchase or a further perusal are silly. If anything, as several have noted, the cover, much like prior NO covers, is more likely to inspire curiosity in the nonfan...

I picked up Lowlife in the shop back in 1985 because it was so strange looking. I had to check it out. If I were 16 again and had never heard of NO, I would most likely be interested in this odd sleeve.

Blood sweat and tears has nothing to do with good design.

The question of a designer is typically: Does the art supplement, introduce, or describe the contents?

Saville has succeeded again. This lp will be different than anything near it in the bins. It will be highly visible across a record store floor. But it is not obnoxious.

Plus, an lp cover has a much different purpose than it did in the 1980s. It is for smaller cds and more importantly for online sales and should be clear even in small online sale jpgs. Cover art has new intentions. It is no longer about a foot by foot sleeve in a bin that you can touch...

I admire Saville for trailblazing lp art from 1979 to 2005... another Republic or Technique would make many folks here at NOOL happy, but would be redundant and anachronistic.

The problem of this sleeve is the concept is alright, but it's how it looks that's, I'm afraid, crap. Had he used another font and different colours it could be still alright, but this is too plain... and I bet he did it on purpose... he wanted us all to say "I can do it myself on Word", so he can reply "Yes, but I HAVE made it, you could have made it, but you haven't. I HAVE." Great concept, as I was saying. But still looks crap!

It's hard for me to write about this, because I've always been Saville's fan, but it's just because I love his true artworks I can't love this, and I'm just sorry if New Order relase such a wonderful album with such a sleeve... UNLESS the cover is, like, transparent, and there's something below that, or the CD case is different... for example you may remember the excellent artwork for Pet Shop Boys' Bilingual, looked plain on print, but once you had the CD in your hands you saw it was wonderful...

But substance has the least badly aged artwork of all of NO's stuff, in my opinion...

Whats the "inside line" from Saville. Personally, I wasnt too sure at first, but like it now. I also think the "NEWorder WFTSC" should stay in the top right hand corner.

The text is definetly Helvetica Light. Not Avant Garde. The Capital N of avant garde is sharp at the corners.

Absolutely brilliant. Along with TECHNIQUE and CLOSER, the best LP cover Saville has ever done.
