Now now, calm down dear, design isn't so much about skill as it is about fulfilling a purpose, and it isn't so much about the process (how well qualified you have to be) - it's the ultimate product that's all important. If you want to do it on your criteria - making a piece of art which will keep the fans happy - then you're never going to win, because everyone has wildly different tastes in art. However, as far as eye-catching goes, or different, or whatever, this is a winner. Everyone's so obsessed with making a piece of art on their covers it's sick, and we've come to expect it haven't we? About 30 years ago I think we would have been pretty content with just a picture of the band on the front..
I mean, yes, it's a little annoying that Saville has probably walked away with a massive cheque for doing next to bugger all, but there's a bit of value's worth out of it - if anybody else apart from Saville had proposed it, would you think they would have been taken seriously?
I must confess that I've loved the covers as of late (I like the clean, no nonsense style), so maybe it sways my opinion, but a fact remains - it's eyecatching, it's distinctive, and it's different. Perfect.
