Last Ever New Order release?

This just came to me. A boring point mind you, but one I feel compelled to make.

In answer to a question in the 'How Rare is this?' thread I mentioned that the 12" advertised on ebay was actually the mixes from the CD2 release of Spooky.

At the time, NO's Republic singles all had 'A New Order Release' on the cover, but this CD had 'Z New Order Release' instead.

Makes me wonder whether the lads and lass had resigned themselves to no more New Order after the Spooky single.

I always thought it was just a typo.

From everything I've read of the time period surrounding Republic, there was a lot of bickering and such so it's not hard to see why they might feel like that was the end. It did take them 8 years to sort everything out and put out new material, so it wasen't easy. I really have to wonder if they've got anything more that will be released, or if GR is the end of the proverbial road for NO as a recording act.

I think they'll make at least one more album. Whate else are they gonna do? The Other Two and Monaco are finished and Electronic are unlikely to be doing anything for a while yet. I think they know fine well that their best work has always been as New Order. They still make classic records i.e. Crystal so only ageism would be a reason for wanting them to stop.

I don't think it's a question of whether NO want to keep recording or not but whether the record companies want to keep them on the roster. Record companies are all about trends, and right now hip-hop is trendy. New Order couldn't give two fucks about commercial success, but the chances of them putting out another album (at least on their current label) could be affected by lack of sales. Shitty that it'd come down to that....

Do you think GR has really done that badly? OK it never hit Number 1 in the UK, but it was hardly a flop. OK, bands like the Bunnymen have been dropped by record labels but NO sold a lot more than they did. Again, it comes down to single choices I'm afraid, and the fact that Radio1 here in the UK is fecking shite.

Thats a good point Zico, I don't think it sold much less than the Charies last album, and GR was backed by quite a large sell out tour as well.

Yeah I noticed that too - until you realise that it was a very sneaky reference to the actual name of the CD case in which that version came in - called a 'Z-pack' - open it out and see what I mean. (like, you've heard of digi-packs and maxi-packs, so this double cd format was so-named). I thought the same about it being their last ever release as well - and I actually felt rather glad because I thought all of Republic - Regret apart I supose- was utter shite and a complete waste of time. In fact I went off the band for quite a long period of time after Low Life. I wasn't a fan of Brotherhood or Technique either - Sonic Youth and The pixies came along and blew me away, and I've not really recorved since. Ne w order just sounded tame by that point.
