Glad someone mentioned the Cocteaus. Had forgotten about them. Always dismissed them as 'Indie bollocks' then was amazed when I first walked into a gig of theirs. Arrived late to the venue - Brixton Academy, around 1993 - and was like walking into a full-on rave. Loads of lasers and the whole place mobbed right back to the doors. Most impressed, made every effort to catch them thereafter. Also met me ex there - a blonde 6ft Kiwi who pulled a knife on me, 'for a laugh', when I offered to buy her a drink. Quality night out.

Some of the Pogues gigs in the 80's were unbelievable too. Remember St Pat's Night in Kentish Town when we had my mate's Dad with us - a stauch Rangers Jock no less - and had him jumping up and down in a circle with us near the back of the venue.

Best New Order gig: Wolverhampton Civic Hall 1986 Best non-NO gig: tough to choose between Blue Aeroplanes, Manchester International 1990 / Galaxie 500, Manchester Boardwalk 1990 and Stone Roses, Manchester Apollo 1995 - the tour where most of the press said they were shit but were in fact awesome

Re: Cocteaus - That's right, Jarvo. Around that time there was a lot of the more ambient-leaning sections of the dance crowd getting into the band, and the gigs reflected this. On the 96 tour, the band were becoming ever more experimental, re-working old classics in an Aphex Twin- stylee. Amazing stuff. Also, like New Order gigs, because of their longevity the Cocteaus attracted an incredibly diverse audience.

Re: Roses 95. Like the man Brough says, this tour was astonishing. Still upsets me to think how it all went so horribly wrong when those Xmas gigs were SO special. Convinced me they were still the best band in the world, anyway....(NB - having given up on the Order ever returning at this point, natch).

Oh, and the Pogues. If you ever had a soft spot for Shane and the boys get yourselves along to the reunion gigs this week. MacGowan might be a fat bastard these days, but they Pogue as good as they ever did. Seriously.

Best NO Brixton Academy in all categories - playing, set list, atmosphere, in between chat "don't worry I'll think of something else to say in a minute" didn't say anything else all night! Closely followed by 10th Summer at GMex and Glastonbury 1987.

Best non NO: Pogues last night, Manchester Apollo just like a timewarp back to 1987, the Pogues are once again an unbelievably good live band.

The down side to the gig was realising just how lazy NO were at the same venue in October, the difference in sound quality was like comparing a bootleg with a CD. The Pogues played with a few amps stuck on the floor, New Order should be able to sound check without the band. Theres professionalism for you.

Oh please don't get me started on The Residents (even if I do keep bangin' on about Stereolab and Saint Etienne all the time whenevr these threads pop up....) - they're one of my all time favourite bands - absolute fucking genius! And with a back catalogue and legacy to kill for!!!

I rue the day I missed The Residents playing two nights at the Royal Festival Hall only two months ago - I couldn't get down there due to travelling difficulties - and the tcikets were still available for one of the dates - a mere £15 a throw - grrrr... I feel sick to the back teeth about that, yet another missed opportunity seeing as I have never ever seen them or their eyeballs live. Doh!

Best NO gig has to be the first time I saw them at the Tower Ballroom in Brum. Lots of things stand out:

The dancefloor had palm trees on it
They came on stage about an hour after my last train home
They played Thieves Like Us and did Ceremony and Temptation back to back
They said 'we might be a pop group but you're a fucking wanker' to a heckler in the crowd
Hooky walked through the crowd before the gig
I met my step sister again for the first time in years

All in all, everthing you could wish to hope for from an NO experience.

The best non New Order gig was probably Kraftwerk just because you realised you were actually watching living legends.

Yeah a great gig - got it on tape - lovely bit of backchat from the band :lol: I think in an interview a few years later Gillian actually said that it was her favourite New Order concert :nod:

Either Let It Be or Tim to start off with. The latter has one of the most incredibly sad songs I've ever heard, "Here Comes A Regular". Like Iaid said, the greatest bar band of all time. I'm sure I'll ask you to recommend some British bands to me, cause I don't have much of a handle about things over there anymore.
