Favourite gig

Didnt go to cities in the park but Reading'93 was an outstanding concert, rumoured to be their last ever live show amid rumours of a split - it held a lot of intesity and feeling and i, along with those on the front line savoured every minute of it :)

hm...i've seen New Order live three times...Germany Loreley 1993, Robbie Williams support 2001 and Cologne Palladium 2001. The Palladium Gig was definitely the best of the three...the only good thing about the 93' gig was that they played Dream Attack...i didn't like the setlist build around Republic material....

Best New Order gig......hmmmmm.

Probably Birmingham 86, though Portsmouth 84 and Hemel Hempstead 85 run it close.

Best other gig......

i've never seen new order, but my favourite non new order gig would be placebo, at the wolverhampton civic hall last year, and also v2001.

Favourite gig by another band just has to be the godlike SAINT ETIENNE - Manchester University, May 2000. And I met up and chatted with the Divine Goddess Of Slinky Feline Silvakrin Cool herself, Ms Sarah Cracknell, and had a few photos taken with my cheeks resting up against hers.....(and then those of her two equally luscious backing singers Charlotte and Leanne .....) Oh yes. Oh yes indeed.

Fave NO Show : May 2, 1989 Technique tour, w/Throwing Muses opening. Only Oregon appearance ever for the gang, and the crowd was suitably amped for the performance.

Other band: The Replacements at the I-Beam SF(don't know why, the Mats never played a good show in Portland, and I skipped the infamous show where they shaved their eyebrows before playing, insuring the sweat would run into their eyes. They then proceeded to bring the opening band-Young Fresh Fellows-out to jam w/them, and then proceeded to change clothes with them while onstage. Afterwards, they threw furniture out of the second story window of the club. My friend who went told me it was pretty bad, but pretty funny at the same time. Check the run-out on the vinyl album of Don't Tell A Soul that followed shortly afterwards : Portland......we're sorry). Anyway, the Mats were in fine form w/out being out of control in SF, and the audience responded w/a lot of energy and enthusiasm for a band still struggling to find a wider audience.

That is awesome. That means you saw Bobby himself in action, right? That probably also means you're older than dirt :) but I always wish I had been born about ten years earlier so i could have caught all those great bands in their heydays, The Mats, NewOrder, The Smiths, REM. I'm so jealous. And biter that we couldn't have today's technology then so there at least would be killer bootlegs.

What was it like to see Paul, et al in their prime? We're talking around Let it Be and Tim correct? Wonderful!!

They were a band from the mid to late eighties that fell in the category of "alternative music" like NewOrder. They don't sound similar to Barney et al but both bands became popular on college radio and didn't get played on popular commercials stations or MTV that much.

The Replacements are what I consider a true rock n roll band and I think that i have heard them described as the world' best bar band. I'm trying to think of how to get you exposed. See if you can find them on audiogalaxy or whatever you use to download music. Their best album generally considered to be Let It Be (beatles ripoff intentional). So look for songs like "unsatisfied", "answering machine", "i will dare", "sixteen blue". I'll be interested to hear what you think, Shug. They rank right up there for me with NO as a classic band. Perhaps Green can enlighten you more.

Well, Shug, Paul Westerberg was the singer/writer and the band hailed from Minneapolis in the early 80's. Started out as a punk band, but they were always a bit more than yer standard thrash outfit as their first b-side "If Only You Were Lonely" was an acoustic gem with a lyrical twist that seemed beyond the ability of the Circle Jerks, et al.

Basically, they were a blend of punk and pop and some metal and acoustic and some other musical madness (one of my fave songs, Treatment Bound, has all of the band members playing some other instrument rather shakily). The songwriting credits on Mr. Whirly, which steals rather blatantly from a couple of songs, say "Mostly Stolen". The bottom line: they started out as self-effacing punks, but turned out to be a fine example of American indie rock circa the mid-80s along w/R.E.M., Dream Syndicate, Mission of Burma, etc.

In concert they were famed for playing a variety of covers as the mood fit them, which meant anything from X to Thin Lizzy to Led Zep to the US Marines fight song to Black Sabbath, often stopping part way through a song. This is my fave line from their bootleg tape liner notes, which is one such night: Sorry about the writing credits. We assume all the songs were copywrighted in the year they were written by those who wrote them. Whoever they were. Sheer drunken genius

One of the Replacements has been playing w/Axl Rose in the new Guns and Roses edition, Tommy Stinson, which is not a good thing.

It was pretty nice seeing the Mats in their prime, Iain, and for the record, I'm only 40, that's not too old ;) . Don't mean to torment you any more, but I had to pull out their only bootleg, the semi-official "The Shit Hits The Fans" while reading this thread. Bob certainly seemed to be more in tune w/the other guys in the band, and his demise was very sad for me.

Don't listen to Westerberg's solo stuff much, I'm afraid, but the Mats will never die in my mind and heart. Oh yeah, I freakin' hate the Goo Goo Dolls!!!!!!! First time I heard that song of theirs "I won't tell them your name", I thought it was nice that Paul was finally going to get a hit, but I was very annoyed when I found out that someone had ripped them off shamelessly for their own profit. Lock, stock and fucking barrel. What a bunch of wankers.

Green,despite my whining I do have two Mats boots- Shit, Shower, and Shave from Bristol, CT and It ain't over unitl the fat roadies play from their last gig in chcago '91. The last song is hootenany, which in the spirit of the original apparently the mats were replaced at their instruments one by one by their roadies and that ended the whole deal. I have all of paul's solo stuff (including the IMHO horrid granpaboy). It's pretty good I think, not the same as mats prime stuff, but there's crap mixed within the good. I do have when the shit hits the fans. If you're interested maybe I could get you some of it (I don't know maybe cdrs or something). Despite living in Bowling Green, OH for the bulk of my tender adolescence we had a really good record store that got really good boots and indie type stuff. I got a JD boot there and the JD warsaw stuff.

And I agree Bob's life was tragic. I wish I had been blessed with such talent. There are a couple websites of mats stuff, they had a picture of his wedding. It's sad when people can't appreciate their talents,though i've been accused of that myself (not that I'm guitar virtuoso or songwriting genius).

I even read that twin tone is remastering their mats stuff to make it better (i think it's supposed to be out now but i have no idea how to find it). I moved to the glorious city of Akron, Oh this fall and haven't gone looking for a record store yet. And there's very vague talk of putting out a lot of unreleased stuff in a box. It was on Rolling Stone.com.

So Twin/Tone is remastering their old disks? That oughta be interesting since I read somewhere that the band threw the masters of their past catalog into the Mississippi River just before they signed w/ Sire/Warner Bros. Very glad to hear that you have "The Shit Hits...". That tape reminds me of all of the fun I ever had at their gigs, even post-Bob.

Think I read that part about throwing the tapes into the river from the old Option magazine. It could have just been a leverage ploy w/Twin/Tone to get a great deal on their back catalog.

They actually refute that in the rolling stone article. Something about that they didn't have the actual masters. They said that twintone was talking to reprise/sire about putting out a total compilation of unreleased stuff (that box set I think). Perhaps if we sent tons of e-mail to twintone and sire.

Did you hear that paul covered "nowhere man" by the beatles for the new sean penn film? he left his record company. don't know what he's doing beyond.

New Order: Reading 98 and the Olympia this year (while I'm not as down on Reading 93 as Jarvo, the atmosphere was, its fair to say, "strange"...)

Weren't The Replacements that band who wore those Frank Sidebottom type big heads ? Remember them being in an edition of Record Mirror circa Sept 87 - only bought it cos there was an expose on Barney's misbehaviour on the late 86 US tour.....
