Songs have many interpretations, there were many topics on this subject in the past, like if True Faith was about "getting out of the closet"...
Maybe some songs may lead you in thinking about that, but no member from the band is gay... but they did collaborate with a few of course, like the Pet Shop Boys.
Cue: series of ribald remarks.
I'd say that the emotive note of Barney's vocals, their readiness to embrace dance music at a time when it was only really popular in gay discos and, erm, probably Hooky's leather trousers are good starting points.
I'm sure they'll get a kick out of GIAUE and Jetstream from the latest record, particularly with Ana Matronic's involvement.

A lot of their stuff has roots in 'Gay' music, but then a lot of their stuff is also very 'straight' - all of Get Ready for example. Don't think it really makes any difference either way to be honest - if you like it,you like it, regardless of what scene the music belongs in.

When I saw the WIM video I had some questions about BS.
The band have gone on record saying they enjoyed the energy and atmosphere of gay disco back in the 80s. This has been an undoubted influence on their music. That doesn't make them gay though, obviously.

Funny this thread came up today; I was just thinking about this, since every time I pull up "Krafty" in the iTunes Music Store, Apple provides a handy link to their "iTunes Essentials" collection entitled, "Gay Pride: Boys." Why? Because "Bizarre Love Triangle" is included, along with some Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell, etc.
Obviously, BLT is essential to any collection.
Except "Gay Pride: Girls," which is all sombre, folksy weepin' and strummin'.

The gay-est NO images I can recall were a series of off-stage photos from one of their US tours, mid-80s. Barney in particular, he sported a very Trade blonde haircut, was quite tanned and seemed to relish getting photographed shirtless.
Think they appear in one of the NO softcovers, perhaps the Mick Middles one.

I never thought Barney was a gay. Not that I have anything against someone being a gay. My friend is a gay and he's way a better person than most of the girls I've met.

Anyway, I'm living in Tokyo and I wanted to meet some gay japanese boys who also loves New Order... But, it's really difficult to find! I went to a special Joy Division&New Order party (which was really great experience for me!), but there was only 10 people and not gay at all!!!

Who cares anyway, it's the music that matters. Gay disco was where it was at. Gay bands like Motley Crue, Poisen 80s hair bands et all despite being gay put out shit music.

49 yr old gay man here....been a NewOrder-obsessive since I bought BlueMonday (when it was new) cause the store clerk recommended it. Never thought about the band being gay, but was ALWAYS appreciative of the dj's in gay clubs embracing them AND Depeche Mode, because of the intelligence of the music...actually something to sink your teeth into amongst the diva disco and piano house...that is why NO had and has a HUGE gay following.
who cares about what kind of sex these men have?

For me, Crystal and krafty sounds like a song for man to man. Only 2 boys, I mean 2 gay boys, can have that kind of feeling so deeply.
