I know 10,000 Maniacs were also fans (there's a two-song ep of live LWTUA and SLC that they recorded in 1980-ish. I believe they're in the audio archive, but listen at your own risk!).

They're actually pretty good, the one cd I have of them is so-so but I'd feel safe in recommending them. Ever hear of Natalie Merchant? She used to be the lead singer, now she's got a solo career. Good stuff if you're into the Smiths/REM kind of mid-Eighties rock. 
no sorry, doesn't ring any bells. but they sound like they're quite cool. i can't get hold of any audio files so i can't listen to them - my computer's really crap and it'll probably crash.
Same here, my mom's speakers are shot, so i can't enjoy the audio archive (dammit)
I would say borrow a cd of theirs from a friend, if any of your friends are into them. If that doesn't work, pick up any of the albums pre 1994 (when Merchant left) with confidence, if you don't like them, you can shoot me 
Frank Rijkaard once did a radio show of one hour of his favourite music. I remember him playing LWTUA. He is (was?)also a fan The Pixies, Breeders and the Smiths.

Well, then, I suppose you'll have to make a trek down to the local Tower Mega-Store-opolis. I can't offer any more insight into how else to listen to the Maniacs. Tell ya what, I'm gonna go to allmusic.com and see what they recommend, that's what I'll suggest to you. Be back in a bit :D
Okay, okay, I'm back.....the ones that have the most stars next to them are "Our Time In Eden" from 1992 and "In My Tribe" from 1986 or 7. Pick up either of those two, I suppose. Hope you like 'em....

Yeah, read that as well mate, when the Charlies playe Top of the Pops in 90 - singing "Then" he stood singing exactly like Barney himself - eyes closed and every now and then throw his arms in the air - It was fooking spooky mate
In My Tribe is better than Our Time...buy it used. just put on Some Friendly last night to get hyped for the evening...what an album. it's been 3years at least since i've put it on. should have had "Happen To Die" on it.

Brian mate, couldn't agree more Some Friendly is fookin brilliant reminds me of when I was a child As for Tim Burgess - I'm sure that in the interview, he said that PCL was the album that changed his life - made him want to be a singer - and before he went out he always played PCL;)

Yeah he certainly did, did you catch him on Desert Island Discs - not only did he mention JD / NO as being his favourite bands - but he also mentioned Glasgow Celtic - What a dude
I'm sure he said "Closer" was his favourite album of all-time - can't remember what New Order stuff he picked though.
